Oscar Leung and Natalie Tong: Rising Stars of TVB
In the past two years, the Hong Kong television industry gets to see the rise of The Confidant <大太監> stars, Oscar Leung (梁烈唯) and Natalie Tong (唐詩詠), into prominence. After winning TVB’s Most Improved Female Artist in 2010 for her performance in A Fistful of Stances <鐵馬尋橋>, Natalie is slowly paving her win to become one of TVB’s top fadans. Oscar, who found fame from 2012’s L’Escargot <缺宅男女> and Tiger Cubs <飛虎>, is quickly following her footsteps. He is currently the most popular candidate to win TVB’s Most Improved Actor this year.
Oscar Has Confidence
Oscar exclaimed that he wants to eventually become a lead actor in TVB. He is very aware that he is neither tall nor handsome, but he does not believe that he is at a disadvantage. “I hope to become a siu sang who is talented and capable,” exclaimed Oscar.
The 33-year-old actor is currently nominated for both the Best Supporting Actor and Most Improved Actor awards for the 2012 TVB Anniversary Awards. “I do not dare to win both of them, but I am rather confident about winning Most Improved. I do not have a high chance for Best Supporting Actor. My competitors are too strong. Koo Ming Wah (古明華) and Power Chan (陳國邦) did really well in their respective roles, and Power Chan is also my teacher – he has taught me so much.”
As Oscar reflected on his performances in the past year, he expressed that he is very grateful to have the chances to pursue in both acting and hosting careers. “I also got to sing, dance, and even do films. My career had a lot of diversity, so it is a better match for the Most Improved criteria.”
Natalie Does Not Crave for Love
In The Confidant, Emperor Tongzhi and Empress Jiashun, portrayed by Oscar and Natalie respectively, are doomed for separation. Although the couple loves each other deeply, Tongzhi’s mother, Empress Dowager Cixi (Michelle Yim 米雪) tries to separate the couple. She succeeds in the end, but at a price. Tongzhi and Cixi’s relationship become more estranged, and Tongzhi begins to seek comfort in prostitutes, later dying from a sexually transmitted disease.
Unlike her role in The Confidant, Natalie is not looking for love. Natalie believes that there are many kinds of love, and romantic love is something that she does not crave at the moment.
Natalie has been linked with Amigo Choi (崔建邦) in the past, and although Natalie has admitted that Amigo had cheated on her more than once. Natalie does not regret the relationship they had with each other, and stressed that she and Amigo are still good friends. Since breaking up with Natalie, Amigo’s life was plagued with scandals. Did his scandals change Natalie’s views of him? Natalie stated, “I want to keep it a secret. I don’t want my perspectives to affect others’ opinions of him, and I do not want to stir up more controversy. Will we reconcile our relationship in the future? I don’t even know what will happen to me in the future! I cannot rule out that I may have a lot of pursuers!”

….I HAVENT EVEN FINISHED WATCHING IT! and now i got spoiled!! Aishhh!
you don’t even need to finish watching the series before knowing the ending of these HISTORICAL characters like tongzhi and cixi.
There were not too many developments in “The Confidant”. The storyline was rather dull and boring. You almost learned everything in the first 10 episodes.
Natalie Tong looked very pretty in the above photo, but she does not look that pretty most of the times.
Personally I think Natalie looks prettier in modern drama series. She did not look pretty at all in “The Confidant”.
It is because in The Confidant her entire look is too old. Not much attention put into her look and wardrobe. I am sure if she got Aimee-titanic-scene wardrobe she will look pretty. Her acting is another matter. Still rather too dramatic. She should lighten up. When I watch her act I feel very burdened. Like too serious even when she is not.
Yeah. Natalie Tong looked too old to be the queen for Emperor Tung Chi. She looked at least 8 years older than Tung Chi.
I don’t think she looked pretty in “The Life and Times of a Sentinel” either. Elaine Yiu looked prettier in ancient drama series. In modern drama series, I think Natalie looks prettier than Elaine.
Tong Zhi is supposed to be 20. Even if in history he was dead 2 years before. The empress is probably older than him since she entered palace in the previous batch. But she doesn’t look old because of her looks, it was the way she dressed.
Huh funny, cause I actually find the above photo of her not as pretty as she usually looks.
Natalie Tong’s acting is getting better, but she still has a long way to go as a 1st line actress.
I like Natalie, Selena and Elaine. Selena’s has gotten a few lead roles so Natalie and Elaine shouldn’t be too far behind.
I do hope Oscar can lead soon as well.
Natalie already scored a lead role with Detective Columbo. She’s with Wayne, and written by Lee Tim Sing so I’m sure it’ll get great ratings. While all the lead roles Selena has gotten are low budget series or its a male oriented drama.
I wish Elaine gets more lead roles she’s a very good actress just like Nancy but just can’t catch a break :/
Oh. Completely forgot about Detective Columbo. I thought Sire was billed before her? Natalie’s role(s) does seem more significant, though.
Elaine irks me sometimes. I see her acting ability on a similar level as Selena and Natalie but… I do like her though. You’re either saying Elaine is at Nancy’s level, how she can’t get any lead roles like Nancy, or both. I agree that she is a good actress but she is not as good as Nancy. I do agree that she should go back to leading the lower budget and male orientated series like Selena as she has shown great improvement in the past few years. Speaking of Elaine, I loved her in ‘A Journey Called Life’. For me, her death was one of the most memorable in TVB.
I wish Elaine would get more chances to act as different and more prominent characters…she’s pretty much been playing tragic characters most of the time.
I agree, I like those 3 actresses a lot and hopefully they’ll get even more opportunities! As for Oscar, I have not seen him act yet so I cannot say. But I do like his personality very much.
don’t think natalie tong is that good looking
but she has very good complexion.
I think Oscar is quite handsome even is doesn’t think so himself.. Support you for Most Improved Actor! <3
