Summer Releases “A Song from the Heart”
Mainland Chinese singer, Summer (吉克隽逸), has released her third single, “A Song from the Heart” <一首心歌>. The song is the soulful singer’s third official music single, which is produced by American musician, Fingazz.
The Sichuan-born singer-songwriter of Yi descent debuted last year through the first season of the talent show, The Voice of China <中国好声音>, winning third place in the competition. She released her chart-topping debut single, “Colorful Black” <彩色的黑>, in December 2012, which was a critically-successful hit. Her songs are praised for being emotionally captivating, which addressed social issues such as awareness and acceptance through thoughtful lyrics.
“It’s a song about communication,” Summer said, in regards to her latest single “A Song from the Heart,” which was released on March 21. “It’s about learning how to communicate with other people, other lives, and other worlds.”
Summer’s popularity skyrocketed in the last few months. The singer has attracted the interest from many endorsers, and has now become a popular face to grace magazine covers and fashion photo shoots. Summer’s performance fee has also skyrocketed to 600,000 RMB per show.
The singer’s overnight popularity came at a price. Her quick rise to stardom is criticized by some. Summer’s dark skin tone, her unique surname, and her exposed relationship with a wealthy young heir have also become a topic of heated discussion.
“All my endorsements and stage performances were determined by my company,” Summer said. “The price isn’t determined by one person alone, and my costumes are designed by a whole team of workers. I only focus on my singing.”
Summer disliked to be labeled as an overnight sensation. “If I could choose again, I would choose to be a professional singer, to be a singer who creates her own music and works.”

Her voice is really powerful. What a nice surprise. When I first saw her picture, I assumed she’d be another one of those singers with no voice, like Gigi Leung or Twins. Very glad that I was wrong and that she can sing!
Mt,
Agree, fell in love with Summer’s voice since watching her on “The Voice of China”. Excited by the new talent in the mainland music scene.
I thought she looks like one of those black lady rappers in US.
Davy,
Actually, in live video clips, Summer resembles a darker and more petite version of Sharon Chan. 🙂
nothing special, another coco lee
The HK music industry needs a few more nothing specials and coco lees because nothings specials and coco lees have talent and can actually sing. Some appreciation of talent is much needed here!
Lol – Agree @MT.
I actually thought she reminded me of Amei Zhang more than Coco Lee.
She’s quite talented 🙂
Mt and Pandamao,
Summer’s album should be released soon, as the response to her first three singles were quite good. Can’t wait to hear more of her songs, as she has a gifted voice.
maybe she went to the very same vocal trainer that coco lee or amei zhang went, nothing special and distinct here
Finally, a legitimate Chinese R$B/soul singer.
Her rendition of James Brown’s “I Feel Good” in “Voice of China” nearly brought down the house and I had thought Aretha Franklin had become Chinese.
