Failing at the Box Office, Cecilia Cheung to Target Television

Cecilia Cheung (張柏芝) has finally accepted her fate. The mother of two has not been doing too well at the box office since her divorce from husband Nicholas Tse (謝霆鋒) in 2011. Having to unfortunately carry the name as “Greater China’s Next Biggest Box Office Poison”, rumors are floating around indicating that film studios and production companies are now taking second thoughts about casting Cecilia in their films.

The 32-year-old actress has no choice but to change her career focus. Instead of investing in motion pictures, her production company will now concentrate on doing television work. To boost up her popularity again, Cecilia has agreed to star in a hoard of physically challenging mainland Chinese variety shows. On April 3, Cecilia began filming for the variety show, Dance My Life <舞出我人生>. After Dance My Life, Cecilia will star in another variety program, Stars in Danger <星跳水立方>.

Wants to Spend More Time with Sons

In regards to her lack of film offers, Cecilia clarified in an interview conducted on April 3 that her sole reason for doing more television was so she could spend more time with her sons.

“Shooting movies take at least three months’ time. Once you put your signature on that piece of paper, you cannot regret it. The entire team has already been set. When you are sick or when you come upon a special day, you can leave the team. In the past, I really enjoyed the process of shooting movies, but now I have two sons who are growing up. I hope to spend more time with them, and doing television instead of movies enables me to do just that. For example, in the morning I can film a television show in the mainland, and by night, I will be able to return to Hong Kong to see them. Maybe they will be sleeping by the time I return, but at least I’m home, and that is the best of all.”

Cecilia revealed that she had to lie to her sons about working in mainland. “My two sons have been complaining about why I’m always working! I told them that if I didn’t work, they would not be able to eat, drink, and play. I told them that we all must work in order to live a full life. I don’t want them to think that everything is there by default.

“My sons then told me, ‘If we don’t eat, then you don’t need to work!’ I then thought of a plan and lied to them that I need to go to school. Lucas eventually complained, asking why I am going to school so late at night. Now, when I leave the house, I will carry a few books with me. If not, they will not believe and let me leave.”

Does Cecilia have a lot of pressure to raise a family? Cecilia laughed, “I grew up with the pressure of having to support a family! But now, I am more worried about memorizing my dance steps!” Dance My Life is a dance competition produced by Canxing Production for CCTV. “I am really not good at dancing! On the other hand, I am not as scared about diving like the rest!”

JSTV’s Stars in Danger is the Chinese version of the Paris-based Banijay International’s high diving show of the same name. The celebrity guests of the show take a crash course in diving and are then required to take a deep dive while facing a live studio audience.

Cecilia expressed that she is “completely obsessed” with doing variety shows. Cecilia reasoned, “Although having to film everyday is tiring, I am enjoying the process. Once I complete the shooting of these two shows, I will think of ways to make some television shows of my own.

“When you are filming a movie, you are on the passive end. The roles, plot, and everything else are already written beforehand. For television, you are able to show the real side of you to the audience. Television shows usually come up with all-new episodes every week, so the audience will be able to familiarize with you quicker. It is a breath of fresh air for me.”

  1. Well her problem is how much the public/media seems to dislike her. No matter what she does the media would shed her in a bad light.

    1. no her problem is her bad acting and poor choice in roles.

      1. Well her acting is pretty much the same before and after her Edison scandal. But after the scandal came to light her career has never truly recovered. I’d say her scandal hit her harder than her poor choice in roles.

  2. Hahaha telling her sons all those lies. Maybe they will grow up hating their dad for not providing enough alimony and poor mum have to study and work herself to death.

  3. I do believe TV shows is more demanding of her time hence little time for her sons rather than movies.

  4. I’m not even sure how to react to the lies she told her sons. Oh wells, what do I know, I’m not a mother.

I don’t even understand her logic re: movies and tv drama. I thought tv drama scheduling is more crazy than movie. And how do you have time to fly back to HK every night if you’re filming a drama?

    1. I think she is talking about filming Variety Shows, and not drama series. Variety show schedules are more routines, something like TVB’s sitcoms.

I don’t like watching Cecilia’s movies, so I am not in a position to comment her acting. She does not have a good voice in the first place, and she always did some weird characters.

      1. she was in quite a few movies back in the days, more popular than Nicolas at the time, I would say. But I can’t really say I’m impressed with acting over the years. She always looked like she sleepwalk through the whole movie.

    2. Well she has to cover so not to ‘lose face’ Of course working in films roles are easier and more money than working for TV.

    3. she is lying to us like how she is lying to her kids. This is all so nonsensical

  5. She is just an over-rated diva with no ability except x-rated photos!

  6. Her acting is over-rated and, with all those botox, her face is forever frozen.

As a wife she was not that supportive of Nic except being demanding. She thought she would score big after the divorce but unfortunately not so. Lying to her sons is setting a bad example and at this age they might think Nic is neglecting them and mummy has to work to bring home the bacon. What a stupid woman.

Who is she kidding trying to cry poor…….I’m sure generous Nic has been fleeced sufficiently to fill her private accounts.

  7. she looks kinda old here. I don’t blame her for lying to her kids. I think her kids are way too clingy. If she told them the truth, they might have psychological breakdown because they can’t be with her mom 24/7. Might as well tell them lies and have them be thankful for everything her mom did for them

  8. There are 2 scenarios :

    1. Nic pays her a lot of alimony and if Nic gave a paltry sum, I am sure the tabloids would have dug up some dirt on that. She is painting herself to be this poor working mum who has to work herself to death to feed her kids to gain sympathy.

    OR

    2. Maybe it’s true. She didn’t receive much alimony for Nic. Maybe he spent on his money on his post production company, leaving him tight on cash.

    1. Maaaan, you don’t honestly think Nicholas would let his kids starve do you? She’s only working to keep herself in the public eye. It’s BS, she doesn’t need to work another day in her life and her kids can still get through college.

  9. Bad publicity = box office bomb. I guessing all the negative press since her marriage failed apart isn’t helping her career

  10. She cant act anyways! She’s annoying!
Now she resorts to variety shows! What a laugh!!!

  11. What a weirdo, when I have to work over time or late I just tell my kid straight up. Why the need to lie? We all know her ex can afford to pay for her not to work, perhaps she doesn’t want to look bad in front of the public, seems like she is mooching off money from her ex. She wants to appear that she is the “Independent, I don’t need money from my ex husband” kind of women. You know women power kekeke

    1. She didn’t any money from Nic. He said it himself. Wasa Nice a supportive husband and father? I doubt it. He was always away or too busy playing video games. He’s probably a better father now.
