“Cold War” is Biggest Winner at 32nd Hong Kong Film Awards
Cold War <寒戰> proved to be the biggest winner last night at the 32nd Hong Kong Film Awards held at the Hong Kong Cultural Center. Not only did it secure the Best Director and Best Screenplay awards, it also helped Tony Leung Ka Fai (梁家輝) clinch his fourth Best Actor award.
Nominated for 12 awards, including Best New Performer, Cold War managed to win 9 awards, leveling it out with 1997’s Comrades: Almost a Love Story <甜蜜蜜>. On the other hand, The Bullet Vanishes <消失的子彈> was also nominated for 12 awards, but it unfortunately took none.
Tony’s Fourth Win
Tony Leung Ka Fai beat strong contenders, Tony Leung Chiu Wai (梁朝偉), Nick Cheung (張家輝), Sean Lau (劉青雲) and Chapman To (杜汶澤) with his role as a deputy police commissioner in Cold War. After his Best Actor wins for Reign Behind the Curtain <垂簾聽政>, 92 Legendary La Rose Noire <92黑玫瑰對黑玫瑰> and Election <黑社會>, this year will mark his fourth HKFA Best Actor win.
When Tony Leung Ka Fai got on the stage, he gratefully said to his team, “The team of performers made Cold War great. They made my Li Sir so great!” Tony’s two daughters demanded that he thank them because they watched the film 4 times, and each time they brought along 20 classmates.
Miriam’s First Time Win
The Best Actress award went to singer-turned actress Miriam Yeung (楊千嬅) for her role in the romantic comedy sequel, Love in the Buff <春嬌與志明>. On stage, Miriam grew anxious and emotional. “I never thought I will have this chance. I want to thank all the directors I have worked with because you have all been my teachers. Thank you for your patience!”Miriam has beat out hot favorites, Sammi Cheng (鄭秀文) and Zhou Xun (周迅) to win the award.
In an interview later, Miriam revealed that in her excitement, she forgot to thank her Love in the Buff costar, Shawn Yue (余文樂).
Best Supporting
Dada Chan (陳靜) and Ronald Cheng (鄭中基) won the Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor respectively, for Vulgaria <低俗喜劇>. Dada said, “I’m not an ambitious person. I just strive to do my best. I win this award today because of the role that was given to me. I want to thank director Pang Ho Cheung (彭浩翔) for that.”
Sharing Award
Though Jackie Chan’s (成龍) CZ12 <十二生肖> beat Sammo Hung (洪金寶) and Chin Ka Lok (錢嘉樂) to bag the Best Action Choreography award, he said, “I will share this award with Sammo and Ka Lok. We are a family. It doesn’t matter who wins the award.”
The “Best Film of Mainland and Taiwan” category, which was added last year in recognition of the regional film industry, was awarded to mainland Chinese production, Back to 1942 <一九四二>. Actor Xu Fan (徐帆) said in a telephone interview, “This is a recognition of our work. We will continue to work hard.”

Cold War was not great. Don’t understand why this movie won so many awards.
because all the competitors were really really weak. But Tony Leung is a fantastic actor and did great in his role. So did Gordan Lam, but he’s not a lucky person.
i saw cold war.Didnt like it that much.Too much talk and not enough action.
agree that it wasnt the best movie. But out of the bunch it was the most exciting one. vulgaria is good too but critics would be all that about who should win best picture.
I don’t like using the F-word a lot because I think it’s often used out of context but it fits perfectly here: farce.
What the hell, man. Are we awarding mediocrity and hype now? Don’t get me wrong, “Cold War” was a solid movie with great production values and a pretty good narrative but come on, 9 awards?
Best actor for Leung who appeared in 1/4th of the film and wasn’t even the main character?
Best visual effects? Over CZ12, Tai Chi 0 and The Guillotines? Are you fkn kidding me?
Best editing? With your fake CGI and black suits and stuff?
And where is Aarif Rahman’s nomination in best supporting actor? He was head-to-head, toe-to-toe with Shing Shing and Big Tony in that movie

Dada’s best supp. actress win was a surprise. I really think Mavis Fan should’ve won but whatever. This will pretty much be Dada’s first and only award, I don’t see her being able to act in more serious roles with her done up boobies and done up face.
As for the best Chinese/Taiwan film going to “Back to 1942”, wow, no. Stinks of Chinese mainland pandering and red propaganda. The famine was bad, the Japanese invading which caused the famine was bad, bad bad Japanese man, bad? Dude, your great leader Mao killed off 30-40 million people in non-war peacetime. Your movie-making rights to vilify the Japanese are null and void when your government kills off 30 to 40 times more than what a wartime famine did.
I’m also not too pleased about Miriam winning the best actress. Should have went to Zhou Xun or Elanne.
Then I strongly urge u to watch Love in the Buff!’

I personally think Leung KF earned his award rightfully.
IMHO, Aarif Lee didn’t stand out in Cold War. I do not think he stands head to head toe to toe with Big Tony or Shing Shing.
However, Dada Chan was a surprise. I thought either Elaine Jin or Mavis Fan would take the BSA.
Frankly speaking I thought anyone out of the 4 nominated actresses could win, so I was not that surprised when Miriam won 😛
Aaron Kwok is such a big sport. He came to the award despite not being nominated.
Chapman should’ve won. No bias, but he really carried “Vulgaria”. “Cold War” was a combined effort.
I like Chapman and wouldn’t complain had Chapman won that night. However I also personally think that Tony LKF was a standout player in Cold War thus justifying his win in my book.

Cold War was a boring and calculating piece of crap. Tony Leung was good, but Chapman To ‘s performance really stood out. Big Tony has done wayy better performances in the 90s/early 2000s and still didn’t win.
Big Tony’s shining moment was when he put the smackdown on the ICAC investigating him.
But Chapman was consistently amazing in “Vulgaria”, from the dinner scene to the monologues up until the end.

“Cold War” was OK, but its marketing and hype really made it overrated. If you may recall, it was called this decade’s “Infernal Affairs”. Seriously. It was NOTHING like IA.
It was an acting showcase, nothing more. Don’t get me started on those CGI fireworks at the end that supposedly won it the best visual effects.
Tony Leung FTW! Chapman to is cool. But he’s not Best Actor Material. Sorry Fanboys.

Cold War was good but not great. It took it like 30 minutes to settle down and start to look like a proper movie. The first bit was just disjointed and all over the place. I didn’t like that at all.
If it had been filmed well for the whole movie, I might not have hated it so much.
I guess they are a just excited that they made another cop drama that didn’t suck, and hoped it was another internal affairs.
Hopefully they can improve with the second part.
I still need to watch silent war though.
I don’t think Miriam Yeung is qualify to get the Best Actress coz the movie didn’t show any special for her….the judge all sleeping or get the under table money from her..this award should be go to Sammi Cheng or Elaine Kong they both can act so good in they movie.
I thought this was her consolation prize for all those years she didn’t win. She should’ve won the year Carina Lau won for Detective Dee IMO. Miriam and Sammi have been nominated probably a dozen times for Best Actress already, but never won anything because the movies they normally film simply aren’t seen as self-important or award-bait. They do comedies and audience-friendly movies.
I agree, bu why does sammi have to be sacraficed? She have gotten 6 nods while miriam only have like two. Its not fair because Sammi and Miriam both performed the same (while sammi probably did better). Its so unfair for Sammi. Like im pissed because Miriam defintley got the adavantage from the judges. This cant be. Cant beleive Miriam got it before Sammi and even Karen. When will my favorites like Sammi and Karen get best actress. sigh
Miriam had only been nominated twice in the awards while Sammi had been nominated for six times. Counting on experience and skills, Sammi topped Miriam. However, last year, Love in the Buff performed well in HK box office than Romancing in thin Air. So more people favours Miriam then. However, in terms of most deserving, Sammi is my pick. When is the time for her?
If you asked me, Sammi’s best chance of winning Best Actress was in 2000 when “Needing You” pretty much murdered everything else.
Unfortunately WKW’s “In the Mood For Love” was released the same year and it went to Maggie Cheung.
Which you know, WKW and Maggie Cheung is a tough combination to beat.
