Yoon Si Yoon and Li Feier in “Happy Noodle”
Starring mainland Chinese actress Li Feier (李菲兒), Korean actor Yoon Si Yoon (윤시윤), and mainland Chinese actor Johnny Zhang (張峻寧), mainland drama Happy Noodle <幸福的麵條> has seen its ratings soar since it began airing on Zhejiang Satellite TV on April 28. Viewers have been particularly captivated by Zhu Lingling (Li Feier), the sweet and kindhearted female lead, whose persevering and unconditional love has deeply touched fans.
Happy Noodle, which mixes a fairy-tale love story with business feuds and family grudges, is the story of Chinese-Korean chef Hushui (Yoon Si Yoon). His mother, Jiang Enying, fell in love with Chinese fencing athlete Zhang Lin, but a car accident before Hushui’s birth led to the lovers’ mistaken separation.
Enying ends up raising her son in Korea, where she makes a living as the owner of a small noodle shop. She also gets saddled with Huzhen (Johnny Zhang), the son of her close friend Wu Runmei. Unfortunately, Enying discovers that she has pancreatic cancer and, as her dying wish, asks Runmei to bring Hushui to China to be reunited with his father. However, Runmei leaves Hushui at an orphanage in Korea, brings Huzhen to China instead, and manipulates Zhang Lin into marrying her.
After many years, during which Hushui’s name is changed to Jiang Xiucan and Huzhen is renamed Zhang Jian, the truth threatens to come to light as Xiucan travels to Hangzhou, China to look for his father.
While in Hangzhou, Xiucan also meets the female lead Zhu Lingling, who has long since admired the dashing Zhang Jian. She quietly keeps watch over him and teases him to make him smile. She even plans to save up money to buy him an expensive and exclusive custom-made kitchen knife. However, fate steps in and tears them apart.
Although Xiucan and Lingling will likely end up in a relationship, viewers still sympathize with Lingling’s quiet admiration of Zhang Jian. Recently, Li Feier posted on her Sina Weibo, voicing thoughts that her character in Happy Noodle can perhaps never articulate: “I actually don’t believe in anything. All of my belief is in you, the smiling hero in my heart. A sun I cannot approach, a lover I cannot touch. Perhaps it will always be beyond reach, but I have never before wanted to leave.”
