Jiro Wang Confidently Leads “Fabulous Boys”
Although the Taiwanese idol drama Fabulous Boys <原來是美男> has not yet premiered, Jiro Wang (汪東城) has already drawn much attention for his anticipated portrayal of the drama’s male lead, Huang Taijing. At a press conference on May 6, Jiro confidently stated that his depiction of Huang Taijing would not lose out to Hwang Tae Kyung, played by Jang Geun Suk (장근석) in the Korean rendition of the drama.
Fabulous Boys, which is an adaptation of the Korean television series You’re Beautiful <美男이시네요>, follows a similar plot line. Taiwanese model/actress Lele Cheng (程予希) plays female lead Gao Meinü, who is forced to pose as her twin brother, Gao Meinan, who successfully auditioned as the keyboardist for boyband A.N.JELL. Unfortunately, the band’s lead singer Huang Taijing (Jiro Wang), who is notoriously difficult to get along with, takes an automatic disliking to her. As a result, Meinü must tread carefully when with Taijing and the other two band members, while struggling to ensure that her identity remains a secret.
Because the production companies threw down 72 million TWD into creating this drama, Jiro did not dare slack off during filming. Since Huang Taijing is a cold and unfeeling character, the normally lively Jiro would often wear a long face when on set. “I really didn’t do it on purpose,” he joked in an interview. “The director demanded it.”
The ratings for Taiwan’s Sunday night idol dramas have been going through a low tide, making the competition all the more fierce. Recently, SETTV announced that it would be pairing actor George Hu (胡宇威) and actress Annie Chen (陳庭妮) in its newest project, hoping to capitalize on their collaboration in Love, Now <真愛趁現在>. This new drama is expected to go head-to-head with Fabulous Boys during the summer.
However, Jiro remains unfazed by the opposition. When asked if Huang Rende (黃仁德), a Korean actor who plays one of the members of A.N.JELL in Fabulous Boys, looked like Taiwanese actor/singer Wu Chun (吳尊), Jiro cheekily responded that Rende “belongs to that category of handsome men, which includes George Hu and Wu Chun, whose noses stick out like a mountain.”
Jiro is also unafraid to draw comparisons between himself and Jang Geun Suk, who he feels has more of a hidden tenderness, whereas Jiro himself is manlier. He hopes that these two different types of Huang Taijing will give viewers a new sort of experience.
Fabulous Boys will begin airing on FTV this Sunday, May 12.

noice
I loved the Korean one and I see a lot of similarities with the original, I wonder if it’s worth rewatching it in a different language, with different actors.
I wonder why are series with a girl disguising as a boy so popular.
– Fabulous Boys
– Hanakimi
– Coffee Prince
Do they really have good storyline or the attraction is the girl in disguise made a cute guy? Are gender-bender series of the reverse kind i.e. boy disguise as girl equally popular?
It is the hint of homosexuality that makes such a series interesting without going full on gay.
@Kidd – you’ve missed out To The Beautiful You kdrama 😉
@Funn – lol, i didn’t even realise I like watching these type of series (in addition to other idol dramas) because of that. I thought it’s more because of the eye-candies, less complication (meaning I don’t have to think too much or over-analyse some parts).
JGS are very pretty and Jiro is Handsome. Looking forward to see it.
HAHAHA. I love the fact that the original lead park shin hye, has a cameo ! DAEKBAK!
Looking good Jiro! Woo!
Yay for the new ‘Zhen Ai’ Love installments!
the female lead is awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww????
My first impression from the trailer too. But maybe as we watch along her looks will grow on us… It may be quite difficult to find lead actress who looks like a beautiful boy (maybe they should try something different i.e. make a drama of a boy pretending to be a girl and choose Mike He as lead :P)
Nothing can beat the original.
As much as i love the original…it wasn’t perfect.
So i’m wondering about all these adaptations for it…deserveth?
The reason why the original was so good was because of the chemistry between cast members, the hilariousness throughout, the fluffy-puppy-cutesy-clumsy-lovestory, Jang Geun Seuk, the OST, Park Shin Hye…
if you think about it, the premises pretty contrived and ridiculous…but somehow its spawned two international adaptations
Anyways, i’ll be checking out this drama. I wanna see a manly version of hwang taekyung. Jiro might just be able to pull it off.
