TVB Begins Local Recruitment For 2013 Miss Hong Kong Pageant
TVB announced details about this year’s Miss Hong Kong Pageant at a press conference attended by former pageant beauties Rebecca Zhu (朱晨麗), Carat Cheung (張名雅), Toby Chan (陳庭欣), Kayi Cheung (張嘉兒) and Tracy Chu (朱千雪). The annual event is one of TVB’s biggest productions, and offered a gateway to young women looking to step foot into the entertainment industry.
The pageant generated controversy last year when TVB decided to use a reality-show format, allowing viewers to cast live votes for their favorite contestants. While the idea appealed to the masses, disaster struck when millions of voters overloaded and crashed TVB’s online servers. To salvage the show, TVB was forced to turn to their judging panel to select the winner, Carat Cheung. Viewers, who have crowned runner-up Tracy Chu in informal online polls, heavily contested the results, calling it rigged and unfair.
Despite last year’s criticisms, TVB will consider implementing the one person, one vote system for this year’s pageant. The company is now accepting applications from local contestants through June 2. Eligible candidates will take part in pageant activities in eight foreign cities, including: Paris, Beijing, Taipei, Istanbul, Bangkok, and Seoul. The semi-finals will take place on August 24 with the finals airing live on September 1.
TVB executive Wai Sai Fai (衛世輝) gave further details at the event. He stated that TVB has completed recruitment overseas and has planned to accept a total of 20 contestants. The company may consider opening up additional spots depending on the quality of the applicants.
Recently, rumors claimed that Gaile Lok’s (樂基兒) younger sister, 24-year-old Crystal, is one of this year’s overseas contestants. Crystal apparently applied for the pageant despite Gaile’s objections, and may compete for the Miss Hong Kong title as a representative of San Francisco. Speaking to reporters, Mr. Wai denied any knowledge regarding these reports but praised the general quality of overseas candidates.
Last year’s runner-up Tracy Chu shared that she had suggested for her younger sisters, ages 21 and 18, to enter the pageant. Her sisters however wish to complete their educations first and will consider applying once they have reached their goals.
Rebecca Zhu, winner of the crown in 2011, wishes she can participate in the pageant once again to travel to the eight exotic cities. When asked about her progress in learning to speak Cantonese, Rebecca said, “I am already practicing every day, and am studying the proper pronunciations. I am not a local after all so I will make mistakes. However, I will be careful and pay extra attention to each syllable.”

im sorry but toby chan is one of the ugliest miss hong kong pageant winners
so is kayi cheung so it’s funny their picture is up there
yes thats so true
Toby Chan is not ugly. She had the best package, including presentation skills. Why don’t people complain about Lisa Ch’ng? MHK 2010 2nd Runner-up. She doesn’t look good at all (even with makeup) and she was not deserving.
That year was really worst.
I think Toby Chan was a deserving winner. Kayi and Toby are the type to look decent with good makeup. The also have other talents. Toby Chan is a very nice person, you can tell by little things she does in the background. Lisa will not look good no matter how much makeup she wears.
She looks okay here. http://artiste.tvb.com/index.php?m=guest&u=tobychan_tvb
Kayi also looks okay here: http://artiste.tvb.com/index.php?m=guest&u=kayicheung_tvb
yeah agree
Personally think she’s hot, if only the average Chinese girl I saw in the city I live in was at least her standard.
And to those who say Kayi is ugly, you must be mental, she’s at minimum okay looking (I’d say she’s quite pretty).
I guess people just want extremely beautiful women to be in a beauty pageant, which is totally acceptable (I guess), but then why not just have a bunch of models in the contest instead, all looking impossibly perfect.
bad capture of kayi!
She is not really a pretty gal on screen either.
I don’t consider any of the girls listed above as beautiful, except maybe Rebecca Zhu, she’s okay.
Call me shallow but they were in a pageant competition right?
i would have to agree with you on this.
there were many more prettier girls in that year. the judges just didnt see it
2nd RU was Whitney Hui right? She is stunning.
yep, you are right (:
mhm interesting (:
I also want to participate one day but I doubt it :3
it just sounds like a good life experience but I also want to give their acting training class a try as well.
Go for it. What you got to lose? (:
Maybe it’s because bubblez lives in canada and it has passed the overseas deadline xD
LOL. But she’s not even in her 20s yet. She got time on her side.
Haha maybe. but it could be her weight too since she did one time say she was chubby or something:3
Talking about the UGLIEST Miss Hong Kong winners, they will have to be:
Hoyan Mok 莫可欣
Mandy Cho 曹敏莉
Shirley Yeung 楊思琦
Kate Tsui 徐子珊
Kayi Cheung 張嘉兒
Edelweiss Cheung 張舒雅
Carat Cheung 張名雅
I do not believe Toby Chan 陳庭欣 is ugly at all, she is cute & sweet person. I have met her in real life.
I think Mandy Cho is ok. But I will add Emily Lo aka Mrs Hacken Lee to your list. I don’t mean they are NOT pretty. Just not the high standard of beauty, elegance and grace like Sonija Kwok, Amy Kwok and Michele Reis.
yep
1. michelle reis
2. sonija kwok
…. (older miss hongkong like angie chiu if she won i dont know but some older miss hongkong generation)
10. amy kwok
But then too be fair #1 and #2 are mix so they are WAY WAY MORE BEAUTIFUL compared to others.
Eliza sam has a sweet face 🙂
Hoyan Mok 莫可欣 – average
Mandy Cho 曹敏莉 – very pretty
Shirley Yeung 楊思琦 – above average
Kate Tsui 徐子珊 – pretty with long hair
Kayi Cheung 張嘉兒 – average
Edelweiss Cheung 張舒雅 – average
Carat Cheung 張名雅 – average
Edelweiss Cheung 張舒雅 – average
—————————————————————-
The above Miss Hong Kong was below average. She is tall, super skinny and not pretty at all.
not a fan of kate sui but i think she is pretty.
Mandy, Shirely, Kate, and Carat do not even come close to the ugliest Miss HK winner, especially if you think Toby is pretty.
IF u went back & watch the competition again for the above girls you mentioned, you will know whose performance and who stood out the most and who deserved to win! LOL !! You think Shirely isnt ugly? OMG! Yes agree with Larry 3 – the above photo isnt even a photo, its a print-screen of a video footage when interviewed by camera crew when asked what they reminiscenced about Miss HK. It was not a good shot of Toby.
I dont see Edelweiss in your list!
Maybe Toby has a BAD camera angle or even not pretty at all.
Carat Cheung shouldnt have won Miss HK 2012. It should have gone to Tracy Chu! Really disappointed. But at least TVB is giving Tracy opportunity by casting her into ‘The Hippocratic Crush 2’. Whereas Carat, highly unlikely she’ll do any tv drama’s. I mean look at Jacqueline Wong(MHK 2012 1st Runner Up) she’s in a game show! The overhyped Roxanne Tong completed a Travel Show & is casted into ‘Love, Come Home’. Bad choice in selecting Roxanne to be in the Travel show, she was soo still and wasnt natural at all. She has a fake personality, just because her Uncle is famous actor ‘Kent Tong’ she gets better treatment?!
The year that Edelweiss Cheung won, was the worst Miss HK win ever! It was soo rigged and she totally didnt even fulfill her duties as the winner. She should have been de-throned but didnt, why? Connections with her father! Ridiculous!
The voting system did f*** up. TVB is doing it again.
Out of last year’s miss hk contestants, my favourite one was Jacqueline Wong. (:
Can we please go back to a PAGEANT format instead of the garbage “reality TV show” format we had last year?
doesn’t gaile lok want her sister crystal lok to strike it rich too?
maybe she thinks the $$$$ does NOT worth all the drama and scandals. But then it could be Gaile already got enough $$$$ from her career and especially her divorce to give to her family so her sister would NOT need to be in the entertainment industry.
shouldn’t miss hongkong be meant for ladies born and raised in hongkong only?
If you born in Hong Kong… you are qualified.
If you live and resided in Hong Kong for certain amount of years, regardless of race or skin type or dont speak Cantonese… you are qualified.
If you have money and want to compete in the pageant….Good Luck.
It only costs $25 or something for application fee. Way cheaper than other pageants.
And if you have a HK ID, you are also qualified. Hence, they can accept overseas applicants.
Where is the $25 come from? The application is FREE. You just may it to local TVB station in your country or do it online. They need your HK ID or your HK passport.
You just MAIL the application to local TVB station in your country or do it online. They need your HK ID or your HK passport.
It’s not free. There’s an application fee enclosed 🙂
Sure… spreading false info
How would you guys know?
Aren’t both of you guys? LOL.
And maybe Simon confused it with Miss Chinese Vancouver/Toronto Pageants or Sunshine Nation. But either way, there is an application fee enclosed with it.
and email typo! sorry about the avatar change.
Have you guys even bother research it? lazy people
you are the one who is lazy.
Have you even entered into one?
Wait… you are a guy XD
I have a friend who enter the competition years ago, there is no fee to apply. Morons.
“years ago”
Not now nor not recent. Things could have changed.
And there’s no need to call us morons.
And even if you’re applying, you still have to pay for your own gowns, postage fee (if mailing it overseas)
You really are a more on.
I think it’s different in every country.
And there’s honestly no need to call the both of us morons. It’s quite rude.
Once again. You people, do your research. then I wont call you guys morons.
Larry,
Even if they didn’t do research or whatnot, they don’t deserve to be called morons or whatever else you have been calling them. That is immature and uncalled for on your own part.
And next time, Simon and Coco will do their homework beforehand! But it’s easy to confuse since Vancouver (Canada) is exposed to several different pageants. I mean Vancouver recently hosted Miss World Canada, Miss Chinese Vancouver pageant and whatnot. It’s easy to be confused as some of these pageant competitions may or may not require application fees. And if they had really gotten confused, that is acceptable. You could have said it politely as well, not calling them morons and whatnot.
You have got to be kidding…………
This is so pathetic.
Sadly, I am not kidding/joking. I mean, yes they got it wrong but did you really have to call them morons?
It’s like me getting a really easy question wrong on a test. Will my teacher say/write “i’m stupid” or something among those lines? No. Same thing here. Just because they got it wrong or got it messed up, it doesn’t give you a right to call anyone “moron”, “stupid”, “more on”, “coco for coco puffs”, etc. Words can hurt someone. If Coco and them were really young (eg. 13 or something), they could take it seriously if they have a low EQ and that could see unforeseen consquences.
*continued*
consequences**
And if something did happen to them in real life, then you could be responsible or something among those lines. :3
huh
thanks Bubblez.
Basically what Bubblez is saying is that:
“Just because WE got it wrong or got it messed up, it doesn’t give YOU a right to call anyone “moron”, “stupid”, “more on”, “coco for coco puffs”, etc. Words can hurt someone. If Coco and them were really young (eg. 13 or something), they could take it seriously if they have a low EQ and that could see unforeseen consequences.”
Like, I don’t call you stupid for not understanding her post!
Should be, but then again the more pretty ladies join the better dont you think? 🙂 Higher quality 🙂
Agree with May!
Toby isnt in that list of ugly MHK’s.
Including in the beautiful list are:
Anne Heung
Loletta Chu
Anne Heung is amazing 😀
With the exception of Sandy Lau (Miss HK 2009?)no Miss HK winners in recent years have really struck me as being super pretty. Of all the
Recent Miss HK winners, I wish Sandy would have stuck to the entertainment industry
If TVB is going to use the voting system again…. just dont use Microcrap Winblows Azure system.
Anyhow, the hackers will crack it. TVB will not be prepared again.
