Kong Wah Sends Blessings and Support to Former Love Sheren Tang

Veteran actor Kong Wah (江華), who gained fame in the 90s for his portrayal of Buddhist monk Tang Sanzang in TVB’s Journey to the West <西遊記>, recently spoke about his relationship with TVB and shared his views regarding Sheren Tang’s (鄧萃雯) complaint of tardy TVB scripts. Kong Wah and Sheren collaborated during their time at ATV, most notably in I have a Date with Spring <我和春天有個約會>. The two were rumored together at the time, generating criticism due to Kong Wah’s married status. Despite their unpleasant past, Kong Wah spoke pleasantly about Sheren and hopes that she will be able to let go of the negativity.

On Sunday, Kong Wah appeared at the premiere of his new film The Hidden Treasure <魔術師的寶貝>, in which he plays a pastor and magician who questions his faith and life’s purpose when his unmarried daughter becomes pregnant. At the event, reporters asked the 50-year-old if he still maintains a contract with former employer TVB. Kong Wah admits that he has a per-series contract but said he is unqualified to “save” the company which is losing many of its top-line artists.

Speaking about Sheren Tang’s frustrations regarding on-set script troubles, Kong Wah shared that he had faced similar situations when he filmed at TVB and agreed that Sheren must have been under tremendous pressure to perform. “I did see the news. Sheren’s situation is understandable because all of the focus is on her. Consort Yu was so popular and well-received in the first series, it is more stressful [to play her well] in the sequel.”

Kong Wah added, “There are different views to every issue. We should try to analyze this from her angle. Right now one person says this, and another says that. As humans we should think from another perspective, and see things from another angle.”

When asked to comment about Sheren’s depression which returned due to recent events, Kong Wah sends his support and believes Sheren will quickly recover. “[She should] let things go and talk it out with good friends. She is very religious so she will be okay. I’ll give her my blessings. I believe the [public opinions] do not carry bad intentions.”

Asked if he would contact Sheren to check up on her well-being. Kong Wah stated they no longer keep in touch, but would not mind doing so if he has the opportunity.

  1. Wow! he is so handsome. Hope he will come back to TVB so I can enjoy his fabulous acting.

    1. Agree. Kong Wah always looks very handsome. I wish he would be 2″ taller, and he will play a perfect 大俠 “Chor Lau Heung” . I like watching his drama series ……. very similar to Adam Cheng in Wuxia series.

      1. You have just inspired me to go rewatch Crimson Sabre.

      2. @Shrimpboat: Haha…ironically, I hated Crimson Sabre because of the way they changed the story so much from the original novel, but I actually enjoyed watching it because of Kong Wah (loved him and Melissa Ng in there). Makes me want to go re-watch that series too…LOL…

  2. what a classy guy!! his answers were very direct, straightforward, but not offensive.

    1. That’s what I thought too. He put them into very good words w/o being sarcastic or offensive. I remember the Benny Chan/Joe Ma incident and he usually does not speak ill of his colleagues but I like his honestly w/Benny Chan as well. Very honest in saying the guy was too playful and you have to grow up sometimes and can’t always play around. That was very nice to hear, other than that I never really watch alot of his series. He looks good for his age too it seems.

    2. Yes, would have to agree with the both of you. Perhaps it is because he has been in the industry for a long time so his responses are very appropriate.

    1. Yes, he is still married. In fact, his wife Kit Man (she was a former singer who retired from the industry years ago) held a few small scale concerts recently with a few of her good friends from the industry.

I miss Kong Wah onscreen as well — he’s one of those rare actors with great talent and also great charisma and screen presence. By the looks of it though, I don’t think he’s going to return to TVB any time soon if at all. Ah well…I should probably try and catch that new movie he’s in then…

  3. yeah I like seeing him with Melissa Ng a ton 🙂

  4. He is one actor that I have great admiration for though I wish I could see more of his actiong. He is not only a handsome and fine actor but is apparently a gentleman who also speaks his mind but not in an offensive manner.

    1. But Kong Wah is also considered as a very critical, picky, and emotional actor in TVB.

  5. i miss his old series!! they were all soo goood!!!
he is so handsome in the pic ^^

    1. Yup! Receently I watched Lady Yang GuiFei! Kong Wah was in this drama series. I really miss his actings. He is better than Adam Cheng! Hope that TVB will invite him back even though it is per series contract.

      1. Yup! Last nite was Yang Gui Fei last episode on starhub. I love to watch his drama series. He is one of the few tvb male actors tat I find to be very charming & gd looking. Will try to find & watch his other old shows online!

  6. I really like him Happy Ever After with Nnadia Chan.

  7. “he plays a pastor and magician who questions his faith and life’s purpose when his unmarried daughter becomes pregnant”

Kinda like a non existent sort of plot. But I hope Kong Wah comes back to TVB.

    1. By the way good answer from Kong Wah who probably is the very few who has the guts to back her up.

      1. He seems to be a very nice guy and ex-lover of Sheren Tang.

  8. Will be good if he and sheren act together in a period drama. Impossible though.

  9. Excellent actor that can play both ancient and modern roles. Also wish he would come back. Loved many of his dramas, Journey to the West of course, Lady Flower Fist, Ritches and Stiches (the only reason for watching that boring show, he was excellent as the gentleman gangster) King of Yesterday and Tomorrow, probably the best guy to play Emperor roles in HK TV

    1. agree! he has always been my favorite actor for ‘Emperor’!

    2. Kong Wah, Gallen and Deric Wan were probably the best actors to come out of HK television in the 90’s.

Loved him in Lady Flower Fist too, although I much prefer his ATV days. My favourite role of his is quite possibly Shum Man Ho in A Cruel Lover.

  10. Kong Wah is so handsome, I looking forward to watch his movies.
    He is very talented actor.

  11. Yes he looks great! His acting & tactfulness too are to be admired.
