2013 Cannes Film Festival
The 66th annual Cannes Film Festival commenced on May 15, 2013 in the French Riviera with the opening of Baz Luhrmann and Leonardo DiCaprio’s The Great Gatsby. Jackie Chan (成龍), Tony Leung (梁朝偉), Carina Lau (劉嘉玲), Zhang Ziyi (章子怡), and Fan Bingbing (范冰冰) were among the Asian artists who walked the red carpet with international stars at the film screening festival.
Mainland Chinese actress, Zhang Ziyi, is selected to be a juror for the Un Certain Regard, a section of the film festival’s official selection. The encouraging award is parallel to the competition for the Palme d’Or, the highest prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
This will be Ziyi’s third time acting as juror for the Un Certain Regard. Along with four other jurors, the 34-year-old actress is tasked to watch 18 films in 10 days. Ziyi expressed that it is an honor to take part and contribute in a prestigious film event. The star insisted that she does not feel the pressure, because now it is finally her chance to relax and enjoy the outstanding films made by talented filmmakers. “I am really fortunate,” said Ziyi.
Jackie Chan and Fan Bingbing Promote “Skiptrace”
Directed by Sam Fell, action comedy Skiptrace held its first international photo call at the Cannes Film Festival on May 16. The English-language film, which stars kung fu legend Jackie Chan and rising international star Fan Bingbing, is about a story concerning a Hong Kong detective and an American gambler working together to take down Hong Kong’s most notorious criminal. This original idea was conceived by Jackie.
Would Jackie and Bingbing play a couple in the movie? Jackie laughed, “She will be my niece! She will be doing most of the fighting. I’ll just do the acting!”
Over $35 million USD was invested into the project. Jackie revealed that the film will also shoot in Rome, Hong Kong, and other international territories. “I want the film to have a Chinese flavor, so most of the film will take place in China or Hong Kong.”
Ang Lee Misses Tony Leung
Carina Lau’s starring film, Bends <過界>, will be competing in the Un Certain Regard, giving Carina the chance to compete for the festival’s Best Actress Award as well. Although husband Tony Leung currently has no films at hand, he walked the red carpet with Carina at the opening ceremony.
Paparazzi caught up with the couple on May 16, when they were seen entering the French Gaston et Gastonette restaurant at approximately 9:30 p.m. Ang Lee (李安), Chen Kun (陈坤), and Nansun Shi (施南生) reportedly met up with the couple minutes later.
Chen Kun was the first to leave the dinner at around 10:45 p.m. At around 11 p.m, Nansun Shi bid farewell to Ang Lee at the entrance of the restaurant. Ang immediately greeted the press and stood by the entrance to accept a brief interview.
