Joyce Cheng Prepares for Mother Lydia Shum’s Memorial Concert

This Saturday, June 1, stars and fans will gather at the Hong Kong Coliseum to mark the 68th birthday of beloved actress Lydia Shum (沈殿霞). The Always Love Lydia <開心果永遠欣想妳演唱會> memorial concert will feature Lydia’s many celebrity friends, including Liza Wang (汪明荃), Carol Cheng (鄭裕玲), Jacky Cheung (張學友), Eric Tsang (曾志偉), and Nat Chan (陳百祥). Lydia’s daughter, Joyce Cheng (鄭欣宜), will also remember her mother with a touching, 30-minute solo performance. Yesterday, Joyce attended a rehearsal session with Nancy Sit (薛家燕), David Lo (盧大偉), Alice Lau (劉雅麗), and Elisa Chan (陳潔靈). Speaking about the upcoming concert, Joyce revealed challenging stunts and shared the sadness she felt during practice.

Organizers planned a solo stage for Joyce to fulfill Lydia’s wish to perform at the Hong Kong Coliseum. Since Lydia had taught Joyce to bravely face her challenges, Joyce decided to overcome her fear of heights by singing while suspended in the air! Joyce explained, “I will be lifted 20 feet off the ground during my performance. I’m actually pretty scared of heights. I may have to hold on tight when time comes.”

Joyce then shared that she broke into tears during song practice, and warned that she will probably break down during the live concert. When asked if her father, actor Adam Cheng (鄭少秋), will attend the event, Joyce said, “He is not in Hong Kong at the moment, but he encouraged me and said to me ‘Rehearse! Practice!'”

Lydia’s good friend Nancy Sit will also perform stunts despite recent knee pains. She revealed that she will play Lydia on stage and will perform a split. She joked, “The designers said my chest is not big enough! They will make the outfit larger and have asked me to ‘stuff’ in more padding!” Nancy also discussed her close friendship with Lydia, revealing their secret agreement. “When Joyce was little, Lydia and I talked about wanting to become in-laws. [My son and Joyce] are both so fit now, there is still time for matchmaking!”

Alice Lau, David Lo, and Elisa Chan spoke fondly of Lydia as well at the rehearsal. Alice shared her admiration for Lydia’s passion and devotion to her work. David reminisced about their Enjoy Yourself Tonight <歡樂今宵> days, and revealed that he and the E.Y.T. cast will participate in gag skits on stage. Elisa recalled Lydia’s joy at her daughter’s success. “Once I visited Fei Jeh at her home, and she was playing Joyce’s CD. We complimented on Joyce’s talent, and Fei Jeh had such a big smile on her face, sweeter than any of our praises!”
