“My Prime Lady” Resembles Japanese Drama
Dayo Wong’s (黃子華) upcoming comedy, My Prime Lady < My盛Lady>, was originally scheduled to release next year, but due to the poor viewership ratings of Bullet Brain <神探高倫布> and Beauty At War <金枝慾孽貳>, TVB decided to move its broadcast slot to this year. Besides the two lead ladies, Kate Tsui (徐子珊) and Sharon Chan (陈敏之), My Prime Lady includes the comedy trio, Louis Yuen (阮兆祥), Benz Hui (許紹雄), and Jazz Lam (林子善), as well as newcomer, May Chan (陳嘉佳).
Dayo Turns into a Life Coach
Last year, Dayo broke up with his long time girlfriend, leading to a heartbreak and noticeable weight loss. Using the experiences from the breakup to help him film this series, Dayo will be playing the role of a life coach who turns middle-aged women, who are past their prime time, into beautiful and confident ladies again.
Like previous collaborations with Carol Cheng (鄭裕玲) in War of the Genders <男親女愛>, Ada Choi (蔡少芬) in To Catch the Uncatchable <棟篤神探>, and Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) in You’re Hired <絕代商驕>, Dayo and Kate will start off as bickering rivals that will eventually turn into lovers.
Sharon, who normally portrays sexy onscreen characters, will be playing of one of the “porkchops” that will undergo a full transformation under Dayo’s tutelage. After becoming a successful singer due to the transformation, Sharon falls in love with Dayo. However, since Dayo is oblivious to the feelings that Sharon has for him, he indirectly sets her up with Louis – causing hilarious misunderstandings.
Plot Resembles Japanese Drama “Nobuta wo Produce”
The series’ plot is rather similar to the popular Japanese drama, Nobuta wo Produce, which starred Horikita Maki as social outcast lacking self-confidence. She underwent a transformation with the coaching of a classmate (Kamenashi Kazuya) and finds her self worth. Just like Nobuta wo Produce, Dayo will attempt to help the women in the drama to find their self-confidence and life-goals again.
In regards to the similarity to Nobuta wo Produce, TVB Deputy Director of External Affairs, Tsang Sing Ming (曾醒明) said, “Only the basic ideas are similar, but the details of the storyline are different. For example, in all procedural dramas, there will always be police and criminals; it doesn’t mean all the dramas will be similar plot-wise.” To save viewership ratings, TVB management hopes to broadcast My Prime Lady by the end of the year.

copy japan again? no taste you hong kong people.
Everyone is copying everyone else these days, but the point is whether they get permission to or not. A lot of Taiwanese dramas are made off of Japanese manga or ideas from Korean series. Everyone is out of ideas so they must copy and borrow ideas. If they don’t, they will not be able to make anymore series.
agreed! Need to copy somehow.
Only reporters have nothing to write these days…can’t blame them. BLAME the SOCIETY.
If you asked me, this is more similar to Dayo Wong and Anita Mui’s “Let’s Sign Along”.
I’ve seen Nobuta wo Produce. I’ve also seen a series called Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge. This makeover theme isn’t anything new.
copying goes full circle. Japan and Korea copied China in ancient times. Now it’s the other way around.
TVB decided to move its broadcast slot to this year, I think suppose Rosy Business 3 ?
Must be because Lee Tim-sing production team include Wayne Lai failed miserably on Bullet Brain.
Anyway TVB beginning to panic especially HKTV coming in soon
I saw you on chinasmack
Oh-dear…dd please don’t reveal my dark secret here
If you called yourself “cloud10” or “notcloud9” I wouldn’t have brought it up.
I’ve actually watched “Nobuta wo Produce” and had NO thought of it being a copy of the Japanese drama when I read the plot for My prime Lady…the idea may be vaguely similar in having a life coach try and refreshen females to be more confident etc. but seriously, the direction of the idea can go so many different ways…besides that idea, the rest of the plotline is pretty different to what MY Prime Lady has install for audiences. I think the media is really overexaggerating when they say they are copying the Japanese drama imo..
It’s almost if it’s a habit for the media/netizens, that when a new tbb series airs, they try their best to track down possible similar connections between series of other cultures or what not and claim that tbb has plagarised another series straight off the bat. Im not saying that in the past or currently tbb isn’t trying to copy other cultures because they are either running out of good ideas or whatever, but sometimes it’s so ridculous about what people claim as copying etc. Every idea stems from another idea…even if an idea doesnt come from another, it would definitely have some similarity in what others may come up with unintentionally.
The idea of giving someone a makeover is not that new. lol
“(…) Dayo and Kate will start off as bickering rivals that will eventually turn into lovers […]”
^ sounds boring and repetitive. :/
Sharon looks so cute.
Dayo is always so funny. Loved the drama with him and Charmaine, they played off each other perfectly.
Hope that Kate will be able to produce some laughs. My expectations aren’t high though since she’s never been a comedic actress. Not a big fan either but she’s alright in those police roles (BTW,HOW MANY POLICEWOMAN ROLES HAS SHE DONE!!! 1 BILLION?!!!)
Kate acted as a police 7 times : eyes in the sky, Buddy cops (movies); On the first beat, when the lanes merge, a great way to care, Forensic heroes III, Sniper Standoff
WOW.
That says a lot about her versatility – she has none. LOLz
i’ll be looking forward to it regardless, though not a huge fan of sharon.
I don’t watch Japanese dramas, so will be looking forward to this. I like the cast.
