Eason Chan Tackles Symphonic Pop With Single “Main Melody”
Hong Kong pop music legend, Eason Chan (陳奕迅), makes a whirlwind comeback with his latest single, “Main Melody” <主旋律>, a unique symphonic pop song that will surely send Cantonese music lovers to a frenzy.
“Main Melody” blends the sounds of classical music, string orchestras, and modern pop-rock melodies into one consistent musical narrative. Co-written by acclaimed musician C.Y. Kong and Lesley Chiang (姜麗文), the daughter of Paul Chun (秦沛) and member of the indie group Benji and Lesley, the fast-changing rhythms and musical theater-inspired “Main Melody” was a great challenge for Eason. It was reported that the award-winning singer took two full nights to record the entire single.
The song starts off with a soft classical overture, produced by the sounds of the piano and stringed instruments. The melodies of the cimbalom, a stringed musical instrument normally used for traditional concerts, and the glockenspiel, a piano-like percussion instrument, contributes to the overture’s mournful gothic tone. The song then proceeds to a slow, waltz-like tempo, which excels to a fast-paced pop rock melody.
In contrast to the song’s name, “Main Melody” does not employ the verse-chorus-verse sequence of a typical pop song. Lacking a definite main melody, the refrain of the song instead lies on the its accelerating orchestral instrumental.
The five-minute song was digitally released on June 14 through iTunes and various mainland Chinese music sites.

It is nothing but an over-orchestrated soppy canto-pop ballad.
Cantopop’s really been craphouse ever since they stopped buying the rights to cover Japanese-composed songs.
If crappy arrangements and overuse of orchestra in every song defines “Cantopop”, then I suggest that they just bite the bullet and just start acquiring these rights again.

Definitely too carried away with the descriptions…but hey, at least this time, Jacky Cheung’s name isn’t mentioned anywhere in the article (most Media outlets can’t seem to write a positive article about Eason without dragging Jacky’s name into it somehow…LOL)….as a Jacky fan, I am grateful! ;o)
may require me some time to like this song .. i tend to like most of his songs but this one is just … pretty mediocre at best.
the description sounded promising, unfortunately the song failed to deliver. the composition sounds like a mess.
the exaggeration used in this article sounds exactly like a communist (remember when they were bragging about appearing in hollywood productions for 4 secs as a cameo?). The continuous transitioning of the song sounds like they’re trying to copy what snsd had with ” I Got a Boy”, only that it sounds more like a mish-mash of kitchen utensils banged together
I enjoy many of Eason’s songs and I like his voice, but I just feel like those writers should have chosen to collaborate with Hacken Lee instead.
