“Bachelors at War” Androgynous Judge Karl Hui Likes Being a Man
Known as the “green monster”, the androgynous appearance of image consultant judge Karl Hui (許嘉浩) from TVB’s reality dating show Bachelors at War <求愛大作戰> always had viewers guessing if he was a man or a woman.
Airing to ailing ratings, Karl went to promote the show at various radio and television programs. He struck a friendship with Clement Chan (陳定邦), one of the show’s judges, and revealed that he will tune in to watch the show every night with Clement.
On speaking about his close friendship with Clement, Karl said, “There were people who developed true feelings [on the show].” Asked if contestant Cyrus and image consultant Queenie Chan (陳莉敏) were dating, Karl said, “A hundred people will be witnesses in the last episodes. It will be revealed then.”
Karl also announced that he would wear a sheer, transparent shirt and a T-back if the show’s ratings hit 30 points. He joked, “That way people would be able to know if I am a man or a woman!” He added, “But obviously I am a man. I stand up when I pee.”
Karl also revealed that a waxing company wanted to hire him as a spokesperson. Karl also said that he enjoys being a man, “I will not consider getting breast augmentations. I don’t want to be a woman. I would have to give birth. That is painful!”
The 15-episode Bachelors at War will have its series finale on Friday, June 28.

Wow, it is very obvious he is a man. The question should be more is he straight or homosexual.
Hmmm you must blind if you need to ask if he gay.
He is straight. I think he is that kind of straight man that does not mind what other people think of him. In fact, many married straight men secretly wear their wives’ bra and underwear because it is a turn-on to them.
It’s definitely a guy. Look at that jawline and nose. A chin that can chisel frikkin granite.
dd,
Are you watching “Bachelors at War”? Would love to hear your perspective.
dd, you would have been a frikkin interesting contestant. honest.
Great to know candid views on HK women decadence. Totally without good up bringing. No values, no principles, just narcissism. Will NEVER date girls like these. Living in HK shows me that God fearing girls are as rare as condors. Glad Malaysian girls are better.ahem…..
Agreed, he (Karl) has an Adam’s apple.
Justin is about to explode from too much overbearing Vivien. LOL 🙂
I haven’t kept up with it day to day, but I have a fair idea of what it is from the flashes that I’ve seen.
We’ve got these male contestants who pretty much squandered their youth from either studying and not socializing, or they have something that prevents them from finding a girlfriend like being ugly. Either way they they are not normal people and this has kept them out of the dating game.
Now, the ladies. OK here we go.
I’ve been wondering whether or not the ladies are all actors or not. At first I thought there was a strong possibility that they were, but then I thought: “what’s the point?”. The producers don’t have enough money to pay these girls and it would be fairly easy to find legit single ladies who want to be on the show. The main group of bachelorettes are real I think.
And finally, the main question is: “what are these girls looking for?”
I can tell you now that it’s not one of those dorks. And surely, none of these guys are relationship material (more on this).
These girls just want to get on TV and be noticed. They’re not stunningly beautiful, no, because the genuinely pretty girls with good personalities will have no trouble finding a partner. These ones plan to get as much TV time as possible, maybe even match up with a guy on the show and then dump him as soon as she’s done.
@totem
Aw shucks. No, I’d rather be a co-host with Karl Hui. Instead of everyone waiting for him to tell you whether or not he’s a guy (that jawline, jesus, mad props to the surgeon if he’s really a woman), I’ll just give him a quick feel to find out the answer and post it on weibo or something.
I’ll be back with my second part after work.
This show definitely isn’t representative of guys and girls looking for relationships. The guys are too socially awkward and the girls are caked-up in make-up and too shallow. If it were up to me, the title wouldn’t be “Bachelors at War”. but “Not what to look for in a guy/girl” or “Sh*t you shouldn’t do when dating”.
There was this segment where the producers set the Canadian-Chinese guy up with this girl and man, I cringed. They were at the cafe and the girl said “oh I’m cold” and the guy THROWS his coat on her. Firstly, holy crap, HK cafes and shopping centres have the A/C turned onto full blast so if you’re cold, don’t wear skimpy-assed clothes next time. Bring a cardigan or something. And then, they gimmicked her handbag with some heavy stuff and she asked him to carry it for her. And he did it! No. Guys, don’t do this. Well, I mean, do this if you’re already a couple. But DON’T carry her handbag/wallet/clothes/whatever because that’s how women test you.
I remember being in high school and a girl I went somewhere with asked me to hold her handbag for her and I instinctively asked “why?”. I couldn’t comprehend it, she was carrying the handbag up until that point where suddenly she couldn’t anymore? Anyway, she said “don’t worry” and that was that.
I also saw the segment where a guy went on a date with another contestant and he was walking around the streets, entering random shops and asking if he can help out for free. It’s so fake. It’s not something the guy would normally do in his free time and besides, girls aren’t interested in that sort of thing.
So my thoughts: this is interesting, but it isn’t worth the time watching every episode. My suggestion is to wait until it’s finished, then download it and watch bits and pieces of it. The premise is interesting though, but don’t take this as how all HK men and women are because it’s not.
For the love of god, the rating do not reach 30 points…no one want to see him in T back!
Havent had a chance to watch this show.
i like this guy.
He’s a tranvestite, it’s bad for the young to air shim on TV. TVB must take account of him as it is decaying the society’s morals. This kind must locked under wraps or the future generation has no hope of good morals. Shim is totally disgusting. Hope TVB gets banned.
I’m watching this show and it’s dumb on all levels. First, all the guy are ugly as bum and you expect the ladies to fall in love with them? Not only that, the guys seem to complain about everything. And i mean everything. “oh why isn’t she paying any attention to me? Or why are HK woman so arrogant? Or why do i have to change in order to attract woman. It should be the other way around?”. Low B. One of the guys in the group is ugly as, his skin has bumps and craters all over and he complains that he can’t get a girl. Lolz wake up and smell the roses dude. One other guy is a little rich boy from Canada, he speaks very little canto, can’t even speak mando and mixes english and canto together, and complains how he can’t get along with HK women.
Obviously you haven’t heard from either Sharon or Vivien have you? They complained from the beginning to the end. To my understanding, I think the last part makes no sense what-so-ever. You are talking about that little prick Vincent, not Justin. Vincent is the forty something guy walking around thinking he can get all the girls.
And the ladies are just as bad as the guys. They are ugly as well, one of them packs on the makeup like it’s on sale for $19.95 and thinks she’s the bomb. lolz. They also complain how they can’t get along with the guys, but the truth is, they don’t want to date any of them cause they are ugly.
Karl seems like a pretty chill guy, but I think the ironic part is the show teaches the contestants how to become a true “alpha male” and Karl (said to date girls) is the total complete opposite of “alpha male”
TVB should invest their efforts into making their dramas better instead of making shows like this.
So pointless and reflects HK people in a negative light.
I don’t know about you guys, but I really enjoy the show! It’s not whether it is actually a show worth using as a guideline on dating but it’s worth the views to just take a peek at the style of dating and the points they give out. You guys might find it completely BS of a show, but it’s pretty entertaining to watch the dramas between people and what they look for in the opposite gender. I’m still pretty young to be considering anything serious in relationships but I can say, this show is appealing to me.
agree with you there. chinese reality shows are entertaining cos it’s a nice change to english ones which i’m too used to.
and the fact that the contestants (and karl) don’t bs and hide what they really think and feel about others is funny too!
Totally agree.
I actually think TVB should make more of these shows, and focus more on making the contestants more presentable, and not only focusing on pairing them up. Cause I’m sure off cam, they wouldn’t want to date eachother
all the contestants are ugly and don’t like their personalities. love korean variety shows more. more entertaining and have good looking contestants!
They have also had a lot of PS too…
I watch the show. I can only say how appalled I am with the bad manners of some of these girls. When watching the US reality shows, it is usually about how crazy some of the characters are, but in this case, it is the bad manners that stood out.
The judge with the mustache and spiky hair is not bad looking.
I dislike Vivian. She’s ugly and a fob.
Next time, try good looking guys vs ugly girls. I’m sure it will have more love couples.
I’ve watched a little of the fourth episode, honestly the guys are not that bad looking. Possibly spiffed up to their best appearance. But come on, which true alpha male is going to stand on the streets trying to hook up with girls? These guys just need about two years of constant socializing to understand how to behave appropriately. No crash course is going to work.
