Cecilia Cheung to Raise Sons in Canada
A Hong Kong magazine reported exclusively yesterday that Cecilia Cheung (張栢芝) has recently applied for Canadian citizenship with her two sons, 5-year-old Lucas Tse (謝振軒) and 3-year-old Quintus Tse (謝振南). For her sons to live a “normal” life, free from the prying eyes of the Hong Kong paparazzi, Cecilia decided to permanently move to Canada and have her two sons attend regular public schools.
A Canadian netizen revealed earlier that Cecilia and her family have moved to a suburban neighborhood in Fleetwood, a town center in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. The netizen expressed that Cecilia did not display any “celebrity diva behavior” and praised her humility. Cecilia took the initiative to greet her neighbors, chat, and happily accepted photos and autographs.
It has been said that Cecilia’s elder half-sister Tai Bik Chi (戴碧芝), who permanently resides in Vancouver, played a role in Cecilia’s decision to move to Canada. Before moving to Canada, Cecilia and her two sons often flew to Vancouver to visit her sister.
Cecilia, Lucas, and Quintus also made an appearance in the Hong Kong International Airport on July 3, en route to Vancouver. It was reported that the family of three bought first class tickets.
Despite the relocation, Cecilia reportedly will not abandon her film career in Hong Kong and mainland China. Cecilia’s ex-husband, Nicholas Tse (謝霆鋒), chose not to comment on the matter.
Cecilia Spotted Swimming With Kids
Today, Cecilia was spotted at a local swimming pool near Surrey with Quintus and Lucas. Fans quickly singled out Cecilia and asked her for photographs. Cecilia did not mind and willingly took photos with the locals.
When fans told Cecilia that it was most important to be happy, Cecilia replied, “I’m very happy; I’m very happy right now.”

why is she near surrey? thats not good
Lucy,
What is the area of Surrey like?
Surrey is a suburb of Vancouver that’s infamously known for having “trailer park trash” growing up there, significant drug and homeless problem (In an area of Whalley, and she doesn’t live very far away from there) and has a very affluent East Indian community. It’s a less expensive community to live in compared to the rest of Vancouver. It’s also a city that has far less Chinese people compared to other suburbs of Vancouver. I assume that reason alone is why she picked Surrey over the others. But if you’re gonna pick Surrey, at least pick a better area like in South Surrey (Panorama Ridge, among others), considering her celebrity status.
Anon,
Thanks for the insight on Surrey. Since Cecilia’s sister is living in Vancouver, she must know the area well. Perhaps Cecilia is in South Surrey, as her exact location is not known.
Jayne,
Well, the article did suggest that she moved into the neighborhood of Fleetwood, which isn’t a good area, in my opinion.
Surrey is notoriously higher crime area. Then again, there are different pockets of Surrey.
Real estate prices are alot cheaper than Vancouver and mini-HK Richmond.
Suburbia yes but there’re more peaceful suburbs. And Surrey schools aren’t exactly noted for being among the top in ranking.
There’re way more Asians now in Surrey – new housing estates with bigger homes for 1/4 of the Vancouver price. More new-immgrant mainlanders are moving out there because:
1) housing prices are cheaper. There’s also less pressure to ‘keep up with thew Wongs’ = less luxury cars, wealthy neighbors etc. private school fees are probably more afforadable too.
2)some Asian perceive the kids get more opportunities to speak more English (nevermind if some of the white crowd out there are ghetto trailer-park types – many Asians cannot tell the difference).
Less of the ESL (English as second lang) crowd when compared to Vancouver city, Richmond, Burnaby and Coquitlam (little Korea) etc
There’s nothing wrong with living in Surrey. Surrey’s schools are well populated and Surrey’s population will continue to grow.
You must be from Surrey.
I do not live in Surrey.
However, the news have reported Surrey’s population to increase and are well populated.

^ I know that. I overlooked it.
However, http://www.thenownewspaper.com/news/plans+unveiled+Surrey+city+centre/8543947/story.html still remains standing.
“Surrey is continuing to grow at a rapid rate compared to other cities in the Lower Mainland and its population recently surpassed 500,000 people. According to the latest census, Vancouver’s total population is just over 600,000.
“Predicting with 13- to 14-thousand people a year moving into Surrey, we’ll pass Vancouver’s population in 10 to 12 years,” said Murray.
“
I found the articles that show’s that backs up my comment:

Thank you very much.
Lindy,
Population increase does not change class.
More people move to live in Surrey not because it is a good place to live. It is probably due to cheaper and more affordable housing. Housing in Vancouver is super expensive, and not many people can afford to own their homes.
It is true that a lot of Indian people live in Surrey. Even hotels and restaurants are a lot cheaper in Surrey.
Soorry but i do note that ppl are only moving there because the houses are significantly cheaper
haha she should live in Richmond 😛
If she lives in Richmond.. she’ll never have privacy! Everyone is Chinese here LOL.
She could have moved to like.. White Rock.. where it’s at least.. idk, slightly better..
“better safe than surrey” :/
whether is surrey or elsewhere, i wonder if Nic has agreed with this/ or if he is informed about this due to his no comment.
^less chinese = more privacy for her. richmond is practically little hong kong, west side point grey area is filled with rich snotty mainlanders (although some hk celebrity ties do reside in that area. im sure her children would be going to the prestigious boys schools in the west side anyways
Once you smell the curry you’ll know you’re in surrey
Who knows they might go to St. Georges’s private school like Nicholas.
It will be weird to live in Surrey and attend St Georges the Dunbar area, westside of Vancouver.
Will take forever to drive in, and St Georges starts at 8.00 or 8.30am in the morning.
i have many friends who live in surrey. i oten go there to hang out lol it’s not like what we think =____=
Exactly.
Anon’s is basing it on the stereotypes that we hear from surrey:/
I am basing it on what I observe when I go to Surrey Central, compared to the rest of Metro Vancouver.
Anon: from what i observe i agree with hg. people and their stereotypes. sigh.
You guys should walk around Guildford Town Centre, and come back and tell me if the clientele is the same as any mall in Vancouver.
the clientele at the Pacific Centre mall is no better than that at Guilford mall. Just because we may hold great disdain for a community for whatever reasons, does not mean our own living backyard is any better.
Anyone should be aware that Surrey has its shady, crime infested areas, but so does Vancouver. There is good and bad in both cities. And yes, a lot of the Downside Eastside Vancouver undesirables or vagrants do hop on the skytrain and bus and go to Surrey to hang out and crime happens. The Surrey vagrants do the same, as in coming to Vancouver.
If CC wants to live in Surrey, that is her decision. Who are we to dictate. Sometimes we get too stuck in our snooty, ancient way of thinking. Celebrity status should not determine where a person chooses to live. that is what is wrong with society today, they have to follow the ‘norm’, instead of their own heart. CC can decide where she wants to live.
Trini: “the clientele at the Pacific Centre mall is no better than that at Guilford mall. Just because we may hold great disdain for a community for whatever reasons, does not mean our own living backyard is any better.”
It’s not a matter of one group being superior than the other, it’s rather the dynamic of 2 different groups of people joining together in a common area. It’s like asking a group of young professionals dressed in business casual to hangout with a bunch of hipsters. It just doesn’t mix. There are tons of young adults grown up in Surrey that can be perceived as trailer trash/skanks/douchebags, as soon as you see the way they dress and the way they talk, you know they’re from Surrey. This is the difference between Vancouver vs. Surrey – Class, and I am speaking from personal experience. Not taking anything away from Vancouver because there are those that carry those traits as well, but nowhere near as commonplace as Surrey.
This is TRADITIONALLY how Surrey is, how most people native to Surrey over 20 years of age is. Maybe things will change with new immigrants. Who knows.
AnoN, are you saying that the way someone dresses is a reflection, a bad one at that, of the city where the person lives?. Then Vancouver, New Westminster, burnaby and all the cities are full of skanks, douchebags etc. The nightclubs in Vancouver are fullof them every night, and these women and men are from Vancouver. I have friends who are bouncers and security guards and the things they tell me. I have eyes too. When driving in Vancover,I see them, as by offices are downtown, I do lunches, dinners and meetings downtown. Where you get off making Vancouver look so idealic and like fantasy dream land. Compared to Surrey is a bunch of cow crap. I see you. The class stations mean a lot to you. I live in Vancover, in a multimilion home in an affluent area, but I got a lotta friends who are not considered in my class, but I love to keep it real. We all sh:t, we all bleed, we need to eat, and we all gotta die. Snooty and snotty is a sin, practised by pathetic fools. Vancouver is no better than Surrey. Get ahold of that reality.
If she (and Nicholas) were as wealthy as purported, why would the sons attend public schools, at Surrey no less.
There isn’t much of a difference between public vs. private schools in Vancouver, with the exception of religion. The quality of education is the same.
Do you mean the quality of education at St. George’s, York House, West Point Grey, or Southridge in Surrey would be the same as any public school?
Not anymore difference than Cornell vs. Harvard.
“Do you mean the quality of education at St. George’s, York House, West Point Grey, or Southridge in Surrey would be the same as any public school?”
Education means nothing if you don’t learn anything. People from HK should stop being so obsessive about education and test scores but more on the actual learning quality.
I went to the LOWEST ranked high school in lower mainland. I still remember lots of the knowledge I learned from there and still apply them to my life. I have a friend that went to St. George and I feel like he is a complete retard because he always ask the dumbest things. Not only that, he went to a US business that ranked within top 20. And yes, I am more successful than him.
US business school
The private schools (Crofton House, St Georges, Yorkhouse, West Pt Grey) SEEM to hold all the top provincial rankings yes.
But behind the scenes – it’s hard for say St Georges NOT to win anything if they send in like 3 teams to an event.
Results are rote-driven and highly competitive in private schools. Very ‘face driven’ school culture for the parents too who try to out do each other in fund-raising and donations.
The private school kids practise a lot of workbooks and exam-based questionnaires, which don’t exactly breed creativity or problem solving skills, but will ensure they know how to pass those exams well.
St Georges also used to have a ‘read your test marks out loud’ practice where the wealthy parents would quietly pull their little ‘Einsteins’ when their grades weren’t in the top echelon. And fork out top dollar to fund private tutors and coach in outside enrichment schools.
And yes you get what you pay for. No matter how bad the student, St Georges does ‘package’ their students so their resumes glow enough to get into (for eg( Stern School of Business (I believe 30+ of them were accepted last yr … of which one was a definite non-studying type who wouldn’t otherwise qualify to get in on his own.)
Compare with the local kids in the top public schools like UHill, Churchill, Eric Hamber and Lord Byng where they’re also getting those scholarships on their own steam.
As for girls’ schools … there’s a saying that ‘one goes to Crofton House to marry a doctor, another goes to York House to become a doctor’. 🙂
Maybe having had a taste of that ‘elite’ private school in HK they went for an interview to get Lucas into … the parents have had enough of the private school culture. Afterall Nic Tse was kicked out of St Georges himself.
It’s a smart move really. Her sons might be able to lead a normal childhood without the HK media around to hound and document their ever move 🙂
nicholas tse is OK with this? i thought they have shared custody of their children.
Once again CC has shown what she’s got on her shoulders….an airhead **. While it’s good to try to ‘show’ her son some normality, given Nic’s profile, do you think they’ll be totally unrecognizable in those neighbourhood?? Totally wrong approach. She may argue’oh but the housing in this area is cheaper’. Get real, I’m sure Nic will buy a place (not a palace) for them. I’m not saying there are no ‘good’ people in these areas (there are ‘bad’ people living in rich neighbourhoods too) but chances of bad exposure are higher. It’s reported that she won’t give up her acting career. So again it means leaving the boys in her ‘half sister’s care’ while she re-seeks her fame on the screen. Nic should protest since they have joint custody. The poor boys are too young to be away from Nic, grandparents Pat & Deborah and aunty Jen.
CC is a no brainer.
You don’t think she discussed this with Nic and his family before doing this? My guess is that this was a well discussed by both parents and they both decided what was best for the kids.
Sad for the two young children to be far away from their daddy, grandparents, etc. They would have to depend on the half sister mostly.
And what does Nic has to say about this?
I don’t think Cecilia Cheung and Nicholas Tse needs to report to the media on why Cecilia and her sons moved to Canada, specifically Surrey.
It’s none of our business, to begin with. Futhermore, why are people on jaynestars so curious in knowing the reasons on wwhat Nicholas Tse thinks of this? It’s not like it affects you in any way.
And obviously, he agreed to it. I heard that people with divorced kids needs to sign these papers if they wish to bring them outside the country or something.
Whoops, I meant to post this separately. So I apologize 😛
I doubt a father will agree to relocate their children half way around the world where they can’t have regular visits. And it is none of our business but since they’re entertainers, their lives and deaths become gossips and so becomes our business so to speak. And I am curious what Nic, the father to these 2 boys have to say about his ex wife relocating them thousands of miles away to a land where he is not there and so his right of access will be disrupted.
In order for a child (if their parents is divorced), the other parent has to give permission for the other parent to bring them out of country. There has to be mutual agreement for this move for their two children to happen in the first place.
Nic can easily afford the trip to Canada to visit.
I highly doubt she did this without his blessing…
“I highly doubt she did this without his blessing…”
^ exactly except Funn “doubt[s] a father will agree to relocate their children half way around the world where they can’t have regular visits”
I wonder how she will keep up her career in HK and China if she moves her sons to Canada?? Who will take care of them when she is away at work? I know that many celebs who work in HK and China live in Canada too but they are older and have grown children who are more independent, while in her case, her kids are way too young and still need her to be around.
To drive into Vancover from Surrey is quite the long traffic jammed commute. There are good and bad places everwhere. A lot of people go to Surrey from all over the lower Mainland and commit crime, giving Surrey a worse wrap than most places. There are gorgeous huge houses in affluent neighbourhoods in Surrey too. There are huge homes scattered all over Surrey, nice golf courses, country clubs etc. Even Vancouver has more homelesness than Surrey. Powellstreet, Hasting street, the whole downtown eastside of Vancouver is such a crime pit that even the once mighty Graville street is a former shadow of its glory days. The great HUDSON BAY STORE, ONCE RESPECTED AND REVERED HAS GRAFITTI AND VAGRANTS
yeah soo true
Your comparison of Homelessness in Vancouver and Surrey is like comparing Apples to Oranges. Surrey is a suburban city of Vancouver where it’s less populated so obviously it will have less homelessness.
And your comment about people from Vancouver going to Surrey to commit crimes is also flawed, as most people from Vancouver RARELY travel to Surrey. There’s nothing there that we don’t have here. Obviously, you didn’t pay much attention to the trial of the 2011 Stanley Cup Riot because MOST of the criminals convicted (of vandalizing and damaging property in Downtown Vancouver) were from Surrey/Langley.
If you check back the links I gave out earlier, Surrey has reached 400,000 people and is expected to exceed Vancouver’s population. And I wouldn’t say it’s less populated, just less concentrated.
And I travel to Surrey ._.
Lindy, enough of this population crap. As of 2013, Vancouver is still more populated than Surrey by about 200K, no matter how you look at it. In the future, when Surrey DOES surpass Vancouver, then come back and make your argument again.
Good for you! You’re in the minority.
@Anon. You were the one who pointed out that Surrey is known for its trailer park trash and homelesness. I was just saying that Vancover has more homeless persons. Wake up call, Vancouver has a lot of Trailer Trash too. Many vagrants travel to Surrey on the buses and skytrain from Vancouver to hang out and get into trouble with the RCMP. Look, I do not wa.nt to argue with you ….okay?. I am just stating the reality of it all. Just because we may live in a city, a.nd have negative vibes about another, it does not mean we need to be not realistic. I
Vagrants sleep on The Hudson Bay Property. Surrey has its good areas, just like the great Vancouver has its good and bad areas.
so what about nic? sure gonna be hard for nic to see his 2 sons now. =/ poor guy~
The sad truth is being a celebrities kid means they have lost their freedom since birth, especially being children of 2 famous celebs.
Rather than trymove them abroad into this futile battle to stay away from publicity, they should instead spend as much time with them as possibleso they can at least still havve parental love.
Good for her
It won’t be that hard for Nic and Cecilia to commute to HK-Vancouver, and vice versa.
Vancouver is little HK, and just to indicate how hot the HK-Van-HK routes are …. Cathay Pacific flies back and forth 4 flights DAILY (no kidding) to Vancouver.
This is just Cathay Pacific … there’re also other Asian airlines which come in almost every other day.
HKgers and China crowd are used to this commute – for most of my friends, it’s like taking the bus every 3 mths or so.
It doesn’t take any expert to know about what’s right or wrong legally.
Cecilia would have legally ‘kidnapped’ the kids if Nic doesn’t know, in a joint-custody situation.
Nic Tse kind of spend some of his childhood growing up in Vancouver. Though his English isn’t great (maybe spoke more Cantonese and hung out with the ESL-pseaking crowd), he would be totally familiar with the culture/lifestyle of Vancouver.
They can either choose to go Cdn-lifestyle, or still maintain the HK-subculture lifestyle (afterall the city is mini-HK), with the same sub-culture and everything-HK available.
Richmond & Crystal Mall (Burnaby)= mini hk!
OMG! IS THAT CC ?? Age is catching up with her BIG TIME!
If the decision is final, Nic is obliged to visit them more often to maintain a close bonding with his siblings; otherwise, he is held responsible for its deleterious consequences.
Good choice!
Then more friends can easily talk about this problem
