Wong Jing Holds Press Conference for New Drama “World of Turbulence”
Wong Jing (王晶) is writing, producing, and directing a new modern family drama titled World of Turbulence <風雲天地>. A press conference was held in Tianjin on August 20 to announce and promote the series, and stars Liza Wang (汪明荃), Angie Chiu (趙雅芝), Wayne Lai (黎耀祥), Edwin Siu (蕭正楠), and Hawick Lau (劉愷威) attended the event.
World of Turbulence is a 40-episode series that focuses on the complex relationships and petty hatred between members of a prominent family. The series has started filming in Tianjin on August 1 and will air sometime next year.
The drama stars Liza Wang as Kwan Yeuk Nam, a single mother who built a successful and prosperous company. Yeuk Nam lost her husband (played by Wayne Lai) many years ago when he committed suicide. She single-handedly raised her three sons, Cho Chi Wang (Kenny Wong 黃德斌), Cho Chi Yuen (Hawick Lau), Cho Chi Ko (Edwin Siu), and adopted daughter Cho Hau Yee (Kimmy Tong 童菲). As her children became older, Yeuk Nam makes plans to pass her company to her eldest, Chi Wang. Although a married man, Chi Wang is actually in love with his adopted sister Hau Yee, who is currently overseas. Hau Yee on the other hand secretly harbors feelings for second brother Chi Yuen.
Meanwhile, Chi Yuen has been putting all of his focus on his career after his girlfriend passed away due to illness. He later becomes involved in a work conflict with elder brother Chi Wang. At this time, sexy Song Chi Wah (Monica Mok 莫小棋) enters the Cho family business and wreaks havoc in Chi Wang’s life. Yeuk Nam has had enough at this point and ordered Chi Yuen to take over the company. Chi Wah, unwilling to give up on the Cho family fortune, tells Chi Wang that he is not Yeuk Nam’s biological son. The two then plot to send Chi Yuen to jail and take over the company.
At the press event, Wayne Lai spoke a bit about his guest role in the series. He revealed that his character committed suicide because of failed gambles on the stock market. Wayne also shared that he will not have any scenes with Liza Wang as Selena Li (李詩韻) will portray the younger Kwan Yeuk Nam.

Angie Chiu portrays the older version of Kate Tsui’s character as Mok Nga-man. Angie is not just a guest star.
I would of thought Hawick would play the villain. I agree that this plot is nothing special, it’s all the same between greed hungry family dramas. Edwin’s role doesn’t sund prominent either and seems like it revolves around Kenny and Hawick.
Edwin’s character wasn’t even mentioned, aside from presenting who he is. But I guess since it’s a grand production with “big” gueststars, he’s pushed back.
I actually thought it was a Mainland drama since it’s filmed there and they have Hawick in the cast. But it’s Cantonese? Then yeah, probably won’t do that well.
Which is why I believe his character has no important role or impact to the series because he wasn’t mentioned at all. I believe it will be in Cantonese, I’m not sure with that cast it just seems awkward if it was in Mandarin. Not a fan of Wong Jing’s productions anyways, he hasn’t made a good film since the 90’s or so.
Isn’t this a TVB series? Then it is cantonese. BEcause Hawick’s mandarin sucks. Why torture us? Just do it in Cantonese.
I believe it’s a Mainland production with TVB actors being involved or not entirely TVB… it is a good question though whether or not this will be filmed in Cantonese or Mandarin.

They will be filming in Hong Kong in September.
Actually, everyone’s role sounds ‘minor’ except for Liza’s, Kenny’s, Hawick’s, and the Mainland actress (sorry, have no clue who she is).
Angie’s role is actually only guest star as well — she will be playing a lawyer (lol…she can get some tips from her lawyer husband Melvin) and from the reports out so far, she doesn’t have a whole lot of screentime (even though she is featured heavily in the promo poster).
But Kenny is a B line actor at best, not sure why he’s got such a heavy role?
So Angie is only guest starring? I thought she would make a comeback but guess not. This series does not sound interesting anyways so it is better she not waste her time.
No, Angie Chiu is not just guest star in this drama. She portrays the older version of Kate Tsui’s character as Mok Nga-man. So, the guest star is Kate Tsui not Angie.
Plot is nothing exceptional, but if it’s as well written as Heart of Greed and Moonlight Resonance, it will do well.
One question. What happened to the Wong Jing drama which stars Dennie Ip and Kenneth Ma? Is the plan scrapped?

Oh bummer. I understand why Dennie would turn down the role. But why did tvb replace Kenneth with Edwin? Odd.

It was just rumors all along. A 40 episodes drama might be too tiring for Deanie. As for Kenneth, schedule conflicts I suppose.
HOG and MR was overrated I think if they were any similar it would be blast for it. The theme does sounds a bit darker like a combination of Central Affairs or Relentless Justice which also starred Hawick. Though most family revenge dramas all ends up with the same ending.
I don’t think Dennie and Kenneth was ever confirmed to film the series it was just rumors.
kenneth not able to film this because he was handpicked by jackie chan to star in his debut movie and attack the movie industry which is hundreds times better than this boring piece of tvb series

Kenneth was filming that Cold Mountain series. If anything, there was a schedule conflict with TVB.
I do not think that HOG and MR was overrated. I thoroughly enjoyed the series even though it might be stressful to watch at times.

@Hannah: Prolly a schedule conflict, but to choose Cold Mountain Hidden Dragon over a Wong Jing directed drama. He must be an idiot to turn down the role. Either that or he has no choice.
^ Kenneth was already filming Cold Mountain when Wong Jing’s series started filming. He probably didn’t have a choice. Remember, when you’re highly promoted at TVB, TVB will not let you film elsewhere unless it benefits them.
This series was planned way before that Jackie Chan movie casting it had nothing to do with that.
It’s just a personal preference as I do not personally enjoy watching dramas where all you see and hear 24/7 is yelling and yelling and making them trying to be reasonable and everything is just money money. Too much crying where it came to the point that it’s just obnoxious, I’ve seen enough drama at home I don’t need to see it on screen. Besides I don’t agree with the way they view certain arguments as reasonable as I’m not as traditional which is why I can’t connect with those series. That Bosco-Linda-Raymond triangle was just too exhausting, they tried to hard to make it a perfect tragic love story and it wasn’t even realistic. Again it’s a personal preference, I just prefer to watch series where family dramas aren’t the main focus.

Ah, the power of rumors! Yup, this is the drama that was originally to star Deanie and Kenneth, but that ended up not panning out (though up until a few weeks prior to the press con, looks like Wiki was still showing Deanie as the female lead because Wong Jing himself even pointed out the error on his Weibo). This serves as another lesson as to why people shouldn’t readily believe all the rumors that come out of the Media (I mean, it was pretty much a given from the getgo that Deanie wasn’t going to have time for TVB — it was the Media who kept hyping up her ‘television comeback’ as though it were a fact…)
Anyway…this would have been an interesting drama if Deanie was still involved….but with the cast and plot as it stands now,no longer interested in watching it…
Both Heart of Greed and Moonlight R are pretty messed written storyline, typical rush ending with conclusion in last episode 🙁 IMO, TVB always failed to produce grand epic drama in 2000’s era. At The Threshold of An Era, Cold Blood Warm Heart are much better than HOG and MR.

Yes. Because the story is not good and also the cast is not appealing; so, why he has to waste his time for playing through whole 40 episodes. Playing a guest is a right decision.

Even though the girl is adopted, she still grew up as their sister. I am not a fan of incestuous plot lines. O_o
I’m not that excited about this series because I don’t really care for any of the stars other than Selena and Wayne, but they’re only guest stars. I thought the Central Affairs series were entertaining though, so hopefully this will end up good.
I hope TVB can do series about poor protagonist working hard to achieve success…I miss those kind of series that encourage and give hope to viewers… Now, most of TVB series (especially the long ones) are about rich families fighting with each other for power/money/inheritance. Using the same theme over and over again can make the viewers bored.

I think China productions has always like this kind of themes. They just couldn’t let go of the plotline of Korean Drama “Endless Love”? haha LOL… Sounds boring but I do like Kenny Wong and Hawick Lau’s ok too as long as he’s NOT speaking Mandarin. Haha TVB Kenny Wong has always been underrated, he’s getting older n older but I think he’s still an OK actor.

How is that gross?? They are NOT related by blood at all. I wonder why people think that is gross but is it not gross to have first cousins who ARE related by blood get married??? How contradictory….
I think the term ‘gross’ is wrongly used to describe the feeling. Maybe the term ‘awkward’ is much more appropriate? Yes, they are not related by blood, but imagine a brother and an adopted sister who were raised together in one family, played together, ate together, celebrated chinese new year together, lived together in a house for 10+ years or maybe 20+ years, and then at the end marry each other? After all, they are legally and socially siblings even though they are not related by blood.
As for Moses and Tavia in MR, it is less awkward for the audience since they were not raised together although personally (I say ‘personally’, which means it doesn’t reflect other people’s opinions), I still think it is equally awkward since they are legally siblings. Why we need an adoption law in the first place when at the end the adopted children are allowed to marry family members that adopt them? But I guess the main reason why Moses with Tavia is less awkward in MR is that nobody cares since Raymond and Linda outweigh them. I’m not sure about this drama since they didn’t mention how close they are as siblings.
By the way, regarding the cousins-who-are-related-by-blood-get-married thing, I think it depends on the culture and the race.
I don’t know how often it happens in real life w/real cousins or whatever getting married but it is GROSS in terms of thinking it alone. It has nothing to do w/blood related. If you are living w/a sibling since by birth even if NOT related by blood, in your heart you are already legally related to each other so to have any sort of relationship is weird regardless. It depends on the individual and their family, if from a traditional family thats probably a major no no or even a non-traditional it’s still major turn off. To you, it might seem normal but to some it’s gross it’s just a feeling that you can’t fully describe but just doesn’t seem right to have any sort of romantic feelings towards a sibling you grow up with.
I am w/you on this. I remember a manga from Japan and his twin brother was actually in love w/his real blood twin sister or whatever and they even made a live action. I don’t even have the heart to remember what the name was now but OMG, these creepy and incestous plots have really got to go esp when you are indeed blood related it’s already worse enough when it’s only living related.

China is not known for their modern series and I have not seen a single good modern series from them. They are more known for their ancient, wu xia and historical series.
Cast look good but sound boring.
A typical chinese drama. I think the chinese entertainment industry (China and Hong Kong) can only do well in either a family drama where the siblings hate one another because of inheritance and revenge, or an ancient drama where everyone is evil and plots a scheme to kill other people in order to protect themselves or to avenge themselves on the people that do something bad on them.
Sounds like another TVB drama flop. It needs better actors/ actresses to play the roles of Liza’s children. Sorry to say that the chosen actors won’t do it’s justice. Someone like Gallen Lo, Moses or Steven Ma to play the main role of her sons. I hope TVB or Wong Jing will use their budget wisely and spend it on better actors/ actresses
I know, all those series these days are so very boring and not much of a point. It’s like they are literally out of ideas on the plots and I don’t think it’s the new or old faces, the scripts are not there so how can anyone shine on any of them?

Hope the series doesn’t just take place in mainland China. History shows modern family fighting dramas don’t do well in HK even if they have a big cast if the setting is mainland China. Just look at Growing Through Life.
