“Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon” Releases Final Trailer
Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon <狄仁傑之神都龍王>, the prequel to the 2010 film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame <狄仁傑之通天帝國>, is slated to open in theaters on September 28. The film recently unveiled its final trailer, giving viewers their first glimpse at the titular “Dragon King.”
The trailer opens with a panoramic view of Luoyang, with a brief voice over by the film’s protagonist Di Renjie, also known as Detective Dee. Portrayed by Taiwanese actor Mark Chao (趙又廷), the 21-year-old detective is the young version of the character played by Andy Lau (劉德華) in Mystery of the Phantom Flame.
Throughout the trailer, Detective Dee encounters the rest of the star-studded cast, including mainland Chinese actor William Feng (馮紹峰) as judicial officer Yuchi Zhenjin, who both helps and competes with the detective; mainland Chinese actor Lin Gengxin (林更新) as doctor Sha Tuozhong, who encounters the mysterious illness that the detective must uncover; Hong Kong actress Carina Lau (劉嘉玲) as Empress Wu; Hong Kong actress Angelababy (楊穎) as beauty Rui Ji, who becomes a target of the Dragon King; and Korean actor Kim Bum (金范) as her lover Yuan Zhen.
Rise of the Sea Dragon will be released in 3D and IMAX, lending a sense of awe to both the underwater scenes and the appearance of the Dragon King. Director Tsui Hark (徐克) shared that he had originally wished for Mystery of the Phantom Flame to be shot in 3D as well, but the lack of manpower forced him to utilize 2D technology.
“At the time, there were fewer than five people in the world who were familiar with and had enough experience with 3D special effects, so we had to drop it,” he said. “But Rise of the Sea Dragon challenges the rarely seen underwater 3D filming, which is even harder than Mystery of the Phantom Flame. We specifically invited an Australian cameraman who has underwater 3D experience for this and brought over the world’s first-rate filming equipment.”

Huh? Carina is reprising her role? She was terrible! I can’t even believe her as someone authoritative or even evil or whatever as Wu Zetian. And the costume is stupid.
The title made me think of Percy Jackson’s god awful movie.
the big city scenes looked really cool, but the boat scenes looked a bit fake. Hopefully it doesn’t look that bad in the actual film.
The first film kinda dissapointed me even though I really enjoy Tsui Hark films. The visuals were nice but hte story was bad and predicatable. Hopefully this one improves and fixes what was wrong with the first one.
I just bought the first series of the TV show, so I can watch and compare the 2 hehe. I’d rather have good story and average visuals, than bad story with good looking sets.
what in the world is with the monsters and etc…?
this reminds me more of a crappy american film than a chinese one
Looks like a Chinese rpg game. What happened to tsui hark..
The first one was epic! Interesting characters, awesome plot, and good action. Look forward to this prequel
