Charmaine Sheh Considers Surgery for Neck Injury
Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) is considering undergoing surgery for a vertebral injury. The 38-year-old actress was absent at the TVB Anniversary Gala on the night of November 19, despite reports confirming that she would make an appearance. In a phone interview with the press the next day, Charmaine said she was planning on attending the gala – and even carefully picked out the dress to wear – but had to cancel her appearance last minute due to a severe neck injury.
Earlier this month, Charmaine’s hands and arms suddenly felt numb and she could not sleep for the next ten days from the pain. Her weight also inexplicably dropped from 100 pounds to 94 pounds. The day before the Gala, Charmaine went to get a full-body MRI, and it was discovered that she had a dislocated intervertebral disc, causing some of the soft tissue to press onto her nerves in the spinal cord.
Her doctor recommended surgery as the fastest method for full recovery, but Charmaine is still considering, as it is a risky operation. Her doctor also recommended her to not be around crowded places and to not wear high-heels, prompting her to immediately cancel her gala appearance.
To make matters worse, Charmaine has also caught a cold. The actress said, “I’m doing physical therapy now, and at night I have to eat painkillers before I go to sleep.”
Currently resting at home, Charmaine hopes that her injury would not affect her filming schedule for the TVB drama The Apostle <使徒行者>, which will begin filming in January 2014.

I was wondering where Charmaine was because she had said she would be at the Gala. Hope she has a speedy recovery and can film in Jan.
Hope she gets plenty of rest and gets better soon.
Charmaine Sheh, it is about time for you to take good care of your body. Without good health, you can’t do much.
I hope you will have a speedy recovery.
I would hope she would fell better soon too. Get well soon Charmaine Sheh! If Charmaine sheh won’t be able to film in Jan, at least hopping she can film any drama with Kevin Cheng in it in 2014.
hope she gets better and speedy recovery.Cant believe she is 38.
Any surgery involving the spine or neck is very risky and I hope she has the best advisors around her and also the best surgeon.
Risk can be minimized with a great surgeon and surgical team.
Oh wow. I hope she’ll recover soon.
I hope she has a speedy recovery and that her surgery (if she decides to get it) will go well! (:
Hope Charmaine have a speedy recovery, and if necessary, she should just withdraw from the January series for full recuperation.
agree!
Her health is more important than filming dramas! (:
I agree and hope she considers her health since health always come first. If you do not have health then you do not have anything and cannot do anything.
To Sehseh
I agree with you too. She doesn’t have to film in Jan for her fan and audience to watch her. I think she should wait for later on in 2014 to film so she can have a series or 2 with Kevin Cheng and so she can get well too.
The gala was just like a big party right? Therefore, they were not paid to attend? What about the artists that did perform? Were they paid? If it was a non paid event, you really wonder if that was the reason why Tavia did not attend all those years?
It’s a free event, even to the performers. Of course, the singers has payment but because they are singers, they are hired to perform.
Oh ok, thanks so it was basically just a big and fun party for everyone to attend. It would make sense to pay the singers since they are still working.
To some artists, especially the newbies, it’s an obliged event. Normally whoever work overseas won’t come back but the ones in HK are required to go all.
Since it’s a free event, I’m surprised that Niki attended since she’s not a managed artiste. I thought she only signed contract to do a few series for TVB and is managed by another company.
Hope her a steady recover. She should think for her health first. The series is not that important and it isnt matter if it isnt filmed when its cast has problem with health.
Hope she will alright!
Pray for Charmaine good recovery. Take a good rest at home. Health is more important.
Perhaps can try out chiropractic care + some massage treatment ..
A better alternative to surgery.
Personally I don’t have confidence in chiropractic care. It could make it worse.
My cousin does that for a living so I think it does work or else he would be out of business.
Charmaine is a hard working person even with injury and uncomfortable she stills continue to work really admire her, wish her speedy recovery.
She was accused of changing her mind last minute to not attend TVB Gala Event. What a shame!
She is not the only one who works with injuries but yea anyone who tries even when sick or injured is admirable.
Hope she gets well soon.
Does anyone know how Charmaine got a dislocated intervertebral disc?
She probably had the injury when she is doing her stunts years ago or the grinding work from TVB work schedule.
maybe she wore too much high heels
Since when ppl wear high heels on arms?
What a funny joke!
pray!
That sounds terrible! Hope she’ll recover soon but it doesn’t matter if she can’t film in Jan. Her health is the no. 1 priority.
Don’t worry besides needing rest she already well enough to attend an event yesterday and make money.
what’s all the fuzz. she’ll be there to do her things.
Charmaine has gotten better and already attended an event yesterday. She said her condition doesn’t require surgery and only needs rest before she starts filming in Jan and some physiotetraphy for her hand.
Thanks for the info so I guess it may have been an exaggeration? Anyways, glad she is better.
Timing is perfect.
Convenient excuse not to attend the award ceremonies (esp when not one of the nominees); but now having been given the health green light by doctor, ie not requiring further intervention (like surgery).
Frees her to go to any $$$$$$$-earning event during the holiday season.
agree also happen to tavia last year where she said her feet was badly injured and conveniently skip the gala but later appear in a $$$$$ making function in high heels!
of course non tvb contract artiste will find excuse of not going. there was nothing to do there and there was no $$$$
remind me how tavia still don’t give any valid reason of absence the other day. at least charmaine has a strong reason (although she appear fine a few days afterwards making $$$$), selena also give valid reasons.
You know why cray cray?
Charmaine is a bigger star, therefore people and your media geeks are going to chase her down first especially when she said she was going to attend from the start. And “not feeling well” no matter how you interpret it leaves more room to question “WHAT KIND OF SICKNESS?”
Tavia, on the other hand, had the “other jobs” NO SANE MEDIA PERSON IS GOING TO BE LIKE ‘WHAT OTHER JOBS?’ And for Tavia to non-nonchalantly respond with “oh, another contract I had earlier” Like hello?
I heard that Tavia is taking a long vacation. It is for personal reasons, not work conflicts.
What a coincidence! Tavia’s absence at TVB Gala Event was repeated more than once. She was on a personal vacation in Korea in 2011, missed it again in 2012 due to a leg injury, and was absent again this year without giving a good reason.
At least Charmaine gave a valid excuse – neck injury – for her absence.
Sandcherry:
You def have a very unhealthy grudge for tavia… You can make someone sound like God and another like poo. Keep a balance since you are one of the “older” adults here. Lol
It seems that you are a big fan of Tavia Yeung. It is okay. I can surely accept it. Everyone can have his/her likes and dislikes. You and I are not exceptions.
How do you know that I am an “older” adult? Can an “older” adult give her personal opinions about an artiste? A lot of Tavia’s haters made fun of her “plastic” nose, and I never did.
I only mentioned that Tavia was absent again at such an important TVB event without any valid reason. Were you sure that her absence was due to work conflicts? I also heard from some TVB source that she is now enjoying her long holiday (放大假). If you choose to accept that her absence was due to her work conflicts, I can surely believe that she was on her long vacation.
It is also a fact that Tavia Yeung was absent in TVB anniversary ceremonies in the last 2 years. If you don’t believe it, check it out yourself.
Sandcherry, is it true? I find it hard to swallow that Tavia can simply forgo a compulsory company event for unemergency personal matters i.e. vacation.
If you are really curious, try to find out the truth and share it with us.
I don’t really care about it. I just found it strange since Tavia Yeung is a top fadan and TV Queen in 2012 and she did not attend such a big TVB event.
I’m a little curious because you mentioned that she has a track record of not attending the TVB parties repeatedly. It will be hard to find the truth so I’ll just leave it there.
I am going to reiterate once again, I am not her fan. I like her though but I am not her fan per se since I am not exactly devoted to her. The reason why I keep addressing these things towards you is because I find youre extremely contradicting and that you have an extreme bias while youre always pronouncing yourself to be fair….
I dont really care on who attends these galas or if these artists attends these things or not. The problem is with you throwing whatever little, insignificant pieces of information you find to make your bias opinions and judgments. Like how are you any different from those younglings, haters or super fans you keep titling?
And lastly, there is a timeline on tavia you perhaps missed. I watched this girl since she was an extra since I use to be a crazy tvb fanatic. Where she is today is not because of super duper back up management. If you will or if you like, tavia was one of the two (other being bernice) who was never behind a special “party” in tvb managment. Party as in she wasnt 620’s pet or catherine tsang’s pet. That is why she was stuck between first and second leading roles until managment realized she reaks revenues. Therefore her fame and her leading status was always through her work, her fans and etc. I dont see how anyone can question this lady’s work ethic… I just dont. And to continue to call her fake and hard to work with while throughout her decade and more in tvb, no co workers has complained about her. Its just point blank unfair to a fellow human being.
The last piece of info is from an old article talking about tvb politics. So if you like, you can find it on the internet.
That is your perception of Tavia. My perception is not exactly the same as yours.
I never say I don’t have favouritism. It is you people who “declared” that I am not “biased”. In fact, I really don’t care. What I say here is based on my personal perception of an artiste from her acting, interviews, and of course rumours.
I have watched many interviews of Tavia Yeung throughout the years that she did with other co-artistes. I don’t like her behaviour at interviews. She always made fun of others especially if they were junior to her.
I respect your personal perceptions as long as you respect mine. In fact, everyone of us here has different perceptions of any artiste. It is great if people share mine, but I will be open-minded to listen to others even if they are the opposite.
Why did you have to make a big fuss on my comments?
@crystal wrong 😛 bernice was a virginia favourite right until she decided not to renew her contract with tvb 😛
so you can never know if the actress you mention as climbing solely on her own is not tsang or virginia’s favourite. who knows it might be both since she easily ditch all these tvb important functions and still get promoted 😛
@Crystal: Bernice attended 620’s Bday party occasionally before she left Txb in bad term. However she still remains good comments about 620 as someone cared for her in her dip of career (as in a quite recent Chinese article).
Going to a management’s birthday party isn’t that bad, nor totally shoes-polishing. Not going to a party doesn’t mean an artist dun do any social work underground. And there were Stephen Chan as an executive in the past until he was accused with corruption and TY attended Stephen Chan’s party.
As per Wikipedia, Tavia Yeung got new and special awards “Best Performance of the Year” and ” My Favourite Female Character” by Stephen Chan in “Beyond the Realm of Conscience” in 2009.
Everyone talked about it saying that Tavia Yeung was Stephen Chan’s favourite artiste.
It was also the turning point of Tavia Yeung’s career after winning those awards which were specially given by Stephen Chan. She was always a supporting actress until after “Beyond the Realm of Conscience”in 2009. It’s hard to believe that she did not work hard socially with TVB Senior Management.
I think Moonlight Resonance was pretty much the (major) turning point of her career. Ah Yuet got an overwhelming response and gained Tavia many fans; I recall visiting the TVB website after that period and her popularity had been pushed to the top. Of course management was going to latch onto that and promote her. But it was her work and her fans that got her there in the first place.
Whether she decided to step foot into the social climbing game afterwards, I’ve no idea.
——————-
sandcherry, it’s not exactly rare to come across a comment where you’ve tried to present yourself as the epitome of fairness. Or literally claimed yourself to be. But it’s certainly jarring when you’re making snide remarks on other artists (top of your hit list: Tavia or Christine Kuo). We can be rude, we can be biased or unfair, but it’s a bigger problem when we can’t even acknowledge it.
——————–
Aaaaand I’ll lay off the pettiness for now.
Cray cray: no one is going to take you seriously since you dont even have correct info when it comes to your goddess myolie. Lol. So ill just leave the sane commentors to interpret whatever incorrect and useless jargon you just said.
Fox: That I know but going to one of the executive party isnt sufficient enough to say she was part of that power struggle. But ty for being civil.
Sandcherry: I forgot to add that I am not sure if tavia is riding management power after a point where she realized to survive, hard work isnt enough. I actually do not doubt if she changed her views after 6-8 years. So you could be correct there. As for stepehen chan, he favored her but she wasnt in his so called party. If she was in any party from the start as some of you speculate, she would be in tommy leung’s party.
And as to why it was just your comments? Im going to assume this question is asked seriously so ill respond seriously. Its simple. Its much easier to ignore straight haters and idol suckers/lovers since theyre pretty black and white. But youre in the grey area. For example, your remarks on one artist can make he or she sound flawless, no mistakes, an excellent human being using whatever info you find and warp it into “evidence”. Then there are those who feels your wrath and with the same type, quality and little pieces of info or knowlege you turn it into crazy illogical opinions. Sorry, that’s as polite as I can call it.
On top of all that, you somehow still call yourself “fair” and when confronted you resort to the “I am old. You are young. I am wiser. You shall leave me alone thing” and any frequent or daily visitor knows what im talking about. That is what drives other commentors to lunacy. And ive been around long enough to know, I am not the first one to make remarks to your comments. I can actually think of a couple and they were much much more cruel.
That concludes my answer to your question. Now like, skinnymocha, I will stray away and move on from all this.
If people cannot take my comments, just SKIP them. I don’t need everyone to “agree” with me. It is okay if people want to accuse me of being contradictory.
When I say I am fair, I just mean that I will separate acting skills from personality of an artiste. For example, I don’t think highly of Myolie’s acting, but I like her as a person. She respects her colleagues and never “makes” fun of them. She is always polite at her interviews, no matter she is by herself or with other colleagues. She never interrupts her colleagues’ conversations at interviews.
On the other hand, I don’t like Tavia as a person, but I think highly of her acting.
Christine Kuo ……….. Her acting is bad, her Cantonese is bad, and she is rather mean at her interviews.
I don’t put acting and personality together, and I don’t adore any artistes no matter how good she is. Acting is what an artiste does in a drama series; it can be totally fake. Personality is what she behaves as a person in daily life.
I also believe that every artiste has to “suck” up with producers, scriptwriters, or even senior management in order to move up. It is nothing strange or unusual to me.
Aren’t we free to voice our personal opinions here? I repeat again: If you don’t like to read them, just SKIP them. I have never been rude to any artistes; I don’t praise/curse them no matter I like them or not. Most of the comments that I made here were based on my personal observations (with my eyes and ears open) from drama series and interviews (long or short). I don’t usually believe in rumours reported by tabloids unless they have been reported a few times. I know the truth will be revealed sooner or later if it is true.
About Tavia’s absence at the recent TVB Anniversary Gala, I just made one or two comments about her absence which was reported in Jane’s article. I was surprised to get so much feedback from her fans. Unfortunately it was also true that Tavia was absent more than once in TVB Anniversary Gala!
@Crystal: Tommy Leung’s side doesn’t contain such woman. You can tell by his series such as DOL, Growing through life.
And Im sure one party doesn’t mean anything but a book fair, continuous free functions for Stephen Chan is different, rite? Oh, there were ppl who are called by the court for Stephan Chan’s case and TY was one. I really hate how a person change the attitude to her boss when he was in his dip. Wong Hei was the only loyal one to Stephen Chan. Fala at least said nothing bad about him or against him.
“Artists with NO party affiliation:
Artists include Tavia Yeung, Bernice Liu, Michelle Yim, Kara Hui, Susan Tse, Susanna Kwan, Mary Hon, etc.
Both Tavia and Bernice are considered to not have any party affiliation, which is why they do not ‘appear’ as much on-screen as compared to other artists. Tavia especially – with no party affiliation and practically ‘zero’ rumors – to be able to star in <> as second female lead was certainly no easy feat. As for Bernice – even though she is Moses Chan’s rumored girlfriend, she does not belong to any of the parties, so therefore, is not promoted much.
Michelle, Kara, Susan, Susanna, etc. are all older generation veteran actresses who already have the skill and have been in the industry long enough to know how things work – after seeing all the ups and downs that the industry goes through, they already know that their generation artists will always only be ‘background scenery’ for others. Therefore, they don’t even bother trying to ‘get in line’ to follow a leader.”
I can’t post the link since it’s not letting me but that’s the part of the article I was referring about and where I got most of the info from. I think if anyone else is interested in reading the lengthy article, you can just copy and paste one line of that passage and it should pop up.
Tavia said something bad about Stephen?
Fox:
I meant that if Tavia since the beginning of her career had any party affiliation, it would be Tommy Leung since I glanced that over in a very very old article or it could have just been my memory being all chumped up. Sorry for not explaining myself better.
I don’t think the cited article is very accurate. Bernice was probably under 620’s side until she involved in the Moses breakup which leaded to a termination of Txb contract. She was fairly promoted, although she has never won something with Txb even the Most improved. She was one of the best earners of Txb with high price.
For the other mentioned actress, you should notice that her first lead was 2003 which was pretty soon. I don’t think she doesn’t have any party affiliation but more that she can’t make her name popular to audiences hence she was slowly demoted. Stephen Chan was always under her back to push her up but he wasn’t a good side to start with. Look at his No.1 favourite artist Amigo Chui and you will see that Amigo didn’t have the attention of audiences (even before his scandal) but still lots of promotions.
However you cited that she was under Tommy Leung which is not correct. Tommy Leung’s side contains LF, Ron, Myolie, Michael Miu and Charmaine as the ppl who still have contract relationship with Txb. You can tell by his series.
As for the veterans, most of them are under contract per series hence they don’t need to join a party. However they still can be used by one party more than other, up to their relationship with Catherine Tsang or Tommy Leung.
As for the contracted artists, each of them has and needs a party to be promoted. There is NO no-party artists among those people.
In the beginning of career, Txb artists’ side affiliation are unclear because they are not valuable enough. Until they get some fame, the executives notice them more and choose them to their sides. It is proven that when someone is under one side, the opposite site will put a grudge on them, especially the most popular ones. The less popular don’t have that much hatred hence their sides are not clear to the public.
As for Stephan Chan, it was quite bitter for him to be bite by a number of artists under his sides. He spent efforts to promote them, and in his dip of career, they all treated him coldly. Only Wong Hei stayed with him no matter ups and downs. However actually I didn’t feel surprise anymore after seeing what that woman said about her “friend” when he was in his dip of career.
Ugh fox you kind of have to read the cited article in full because the source actually analyzes the power struggles and what not. I wish I can post the lengthy article but there is a copyright issue apparently in posting links or something. And the article’s emphasis is on the politics of TVB not necessarily who is who’s dog. It might take advanced reading comprehension for one to understand. Lol.
Charmaine is either under catherine tsang or 620. Raymond is def under 620, so is kevin cheng when he was still in tvb. This was also stated in the article. Please do find the article and actualy read it in depth.
Id like to add party affiliations has nothing to do with which directors series they help film. Cause that doesnt mske sense at all.
@Crystal: I read such article long ago and I’ve read more than that about the sides in Txb. There wasn’t only one article and FYI, tat article was just a generated one from few articles.
KC is still Txb’s managed artist :). He is somehow like LF, a managed artist with more flexible contract (to film in China, sing and else). The main reason for their flexible contract is their value. They have higher price than anyone else in Txb so they have more rights.
LF and Charmaine, both are under 620 and Tommy Leung. It was well proven that Tommy Leung’s artists are mostly under 620 while Catherine Tsang’s favourite kids are under Stephen Chan in the past and Sandy Yu in recent time.
Catherine Tsang and Tommy Leung are in charge of series department, so the directors/producers also have party affiliations. As a result, the directors/producers have no choice rather than choosing Catherine Tsang or Tommy Leung’s favourite to cast. Certainly, each producer has their own favourite despite the sides, such as Amy Wong under Catherine Tsang’s side likes KC although he is under 620’s side. Therefore the producer might use their friend card to convince an artist to act for the opposite side. Of course the artists can film for producer of other side but they have to pair with one favourite artist of that side or play second lead to such favoured artist. Several producers said/hinted about that verbal rule such as Johnathan Chik and Lau Ka Hou.
In fact, the article you cited wasn’t really accurate if you read more about the sides and getting to know about some artists. For example, Bernice’s case was probably wrong. Perhaps the writer didn’t find her side clearly so s/he put her under no party affiliation.
Btw, if you notice Toby Leung (daughter of Tommy Leung)’s wedding party, you will see all Tommy Leung’s artists there, with absences of Catherine Tsang’s favourites. Tommy Leung has good relationships with old Txb artists and the artists under his side venture out much better than Catherine Tsang’s favourite. Catherine Tsang’s kids are mostly sticking to Txb and receiving Txb awards.
“We can be rude, we can be biased or unfair, but it’s a bigger problem when we can’t even acknowledge it.”
————————————————————————
I hope you now understand what I meant by “fairness”.
It is quite okay for non-management contract artistes not to attend. None of these artistes attended, such as Chilam Cheung, Ada Choi, Michael Miu, Francis Ng, Lawrence Ng, Joey Meng, and they were all acting lead roles in 2013 drama series. Charmaine Sheh did not have any drama series this year; it would just be a bonus if she attended. Only management-contract artistes are obligated to attend.
Michael Miu is management artist :).
Ok, thanks! It was my mistake.
You are welcome. However I’m not sure how long his contract is as ppl are saying about his contract now. Maybe it’ll end soon. If it is, the Jan series “The Apostle” will contain three artists with one TVBC, two going to terminate contract with Txb. In other words, non-biological sons of Txb in one series, lolz.
As I responded else where to your comment. Charm don’t need to attend the award ceremony. She was absent from the aniversary gala so why bring up the award ceremony? anyway?
Like i said before her condition is not really serious but still she need rest. She have cancelled her events and functions so for u to say she is free to go to any $$$$ earning events is somewhat rude and twist the truth.
I guess people are allowed to say it if the artiste is not her fan.
Glad that you brought it out. If a management-contract artiste was absent due to a flu, why couldn’t Charmaine for her neck injury (serious or not)?
Charmaine Sheh is not a management-contract artiste and she did not have a series aired in 2013.
What I think is Charmaine may still attend some events that cannot be cancelled maybe because too late to cancel or the client refused to let her go, or the event itself is too worthy of an opportunity to be cancelled. I hope she takes a good rest because np matter how much money you earned, you can’t enjoy it if you’re sick.
Regarding the tvb event, maybe because she’s unpaid for the event and has no contract signed for the specific event, add on that she’s not a management artiste, maybe it is more lenient for her to cancel her appearance and have a needful rest, while the condition for commercial and endorsement events are different.
