Raymond Lam’s 3D Wuxia Drama “Detectives and Doctors” to Air Early 2014

Touted as the world’s first 3D wuxia drama, China’s latest iteration of Lu Xiaofeng’s adventures, Detectives and Doctors <陸小鳳與花滿樓>, will begin broadcast as early as February of 2014.

Starring Raymond Lam (林峰) as the flirty protagonist, the 48-episode drama was helmed by Hong Kong director Poon Man Kit (潘文傑) and is adapted from the novel The Golden Bird Dynasty <金鵬王朝>, the first book of wuxia author Gu Long’s (古龍) Lu Xiaofeng series. The story introduces the lead character as he investigates the Emperor’s mysterious illness. He meets a lost princess, Shangguan Danfeng, who informs him that the answer he seeks lies with three officials of her forgotten kingdom. Xiaofeng heeds her advice, and along the way, befriends blind doctor Hua Manlou and swordsman Ximen Chuixue. The three become embroiled in unexpected dangers and complex love dilemmas as they work to unveil the shocking truth.

With a production budget of $100 million RMB, Detectives and Doctors aims to raise the bar in China’s fast-growing entertainment industry. Aside from Raymond, the series also stars popular Mainland actors Zhang Xiaolong (張曉龍), Lan Xi (斕曦), Zhang Meng (張檬), Zong Fengyan (宗峰岩), and veteran actors Kent Cheng (鄭則仕) and Leanne Liu (劉雪華).

Although Raymond typically gets along well with all of his co-stars, he discovered a lifelong friend in Zong Fengyan, who plays the devious Prince Wei, a brother of the Emperor. A graduate of the prestigious Beijing Film Academy, 35-year-old Fengyan has had multiple stints in period dramas. He made his wuxia debut earlier this year in Mainland series Swordsman <笑傲江湖>, playing as Qu Yang, the tragic cult elder who penned the healing music score Xiao Ao Jiang Hu. He will later be seen again in The Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils <天龍八部> as the ruthless Murong Fu, and is currently filming The Return of Condor Heroes <神鵰俠侶> as “Western Venom” Ouyang Feng.

As a key character and an eventual villain in Lu Xiaofeng’s story, Fengyan shared several scenes with Raymond. Similar in age and acting background, the two developed a strong chemistry both on and off the set, and were frequently seen discussing their scenes and sharing meals together. Despite Raymond’s popularity, Fengyan finds him friendly and grounded, and praises him as a good actor.
