Producer Reveals “Ruse of Engagement” is an Intense Love Story

TVB’s first action-crime drama of 2014, Ruse of Engagement <叛逃>, is slated to air next Monday on March 17, 2014. Starring Ruco Chan (陳展鵬), Ron Ng (吳卓羲), Aimee Chan (陳茵媺), Yoyo Mung (蒙嘉慧) and produced by Amy Wong (王心慰), Ruse of Engagement was first introduced in 2010 as a prospective TVB drama for the following year, and though production for the drama finished as early as September 2011, it took TVB two years to air the drama.

Producer Amy Wong described Ruse of Engagement as “a romantic and intense love story”. Amy, who featured the theme of brotherhood in her last production Brother’s Keeper <巨輪>, chose to tackle a different kind of love story for Ruse of Engagement. “As we were researching about terrorist cases from foreign countries, we decided to use a secretive anti-terrorist unit as the backdrop [for the love story]. We also want the audience to admire the charismatic performances of our leads, Ruco and Ron. Everyone will also be captivated by Aimee’s performance here. Ruse of Engagement is another representative work for her.”

Ruse of Engagement chronicles the stories of two brothers who work for Hong Kong’s fictional Anti-Terrorist Force (ATF) of the Hong Kong Police Department. Elder brother Chong Yau Ching (Ruco Chan) and his younger brother, SDU officer Chong Yau Kit (Ron Ng), were not very close growing up, but after collaborating in a case involving an international terrorist group, the brothers find their chemistry and common ground. ATF leader Shum Chi Ngo (Eddie Kwan 關禮傑) recruits the two brothers to his team. The two brothers go through ten weeks of vigorous training, and upon graduation, the wise and laid-back Ching is assigned to the intelligence unit, while the observant and passionate Kit joins the operations unit.

Ching and Chung Yat Ka (Aimee Chan), a data analyst for ATF’s intelligence unit, are a bickering pair, but the two eventually fall in love. Kit has a crush on Ka, but out of respect for his brother, he tries to put his feeling aside.  In a specific missing firearms case, Ching meets journalist Yip Ting (Yoyo Mung), who helps Ching solve the case after she passes him crucial anonymous information. The two develop an ambiguous relationship, but soon after their encounter Ching goes missing. After days searching for her boyfriend, Ka comes across a video of Ching getting killed by a gunshot in the head. Ching’s death devastated Ka. In order to help Ka recover from her emotional loss, Kit imitates Ching in the best way he can, falling deeply in love with her in the process.

The fictional ATF team in the series is based on the real-life anti-terrorist unit, the Counter Terrorism Response Unit (CTRU) of the Hong Kong Police Force. Established in 2009, the CTRU aims to protect, prevent, and investigate terror threats in Hong Kong. CTRU is Asia’s first police anti-terror patrol unit.

  1. No mention of Yoyo huh? Intense love story huh? Between who? Come on, be fair to ALL the cast. Aimee has the greatest luck of being in TWO productions where the lead actress disappears (or rather left TVB). I am afraid of the so called devastation acting by Aimee. I just hope I won’t see another body shaking eyes rolling up performance ala Outbound Love. Can’t they just give her the cool girl role that doesn’t require her to overact or you know, pretend act?

    1. She rolled her eyes in every drama. Nearly look like having seizures.

    2. I meant by the producer. I an baffled by her statement of another representative work. As far as I am concerned she has yet to give any representative work mot even her best thus far the last steep ascent.

    3. I didn’t know that Aimee had any representative works either.

    4. Same here. I thought Yoyo’s one of Amy’s favs.

      Anyway, guess more of Aimee.

    5. TVB should stop trying to make Aimee Chan happen. She’s never going to happen. File Aimee Chan under one of those ‘try hard’ wannabe stars who almost become A-list due to their connections and/or self-promotion, but fail to make it. She’s like the HK equivalent to Jessica Alba and Blake Lively, really.

    6. One of the promo trailers for the series has been airing repeatedly in the U.S. — Yoyo is nowhere to be found in the trailer. In fact, she was even removed from the still image that gets put on the screen right after the trailer (only Ruco, Ron, Aimee, Eddie, and someone else I couldn’t recognize were included).

Out of all the trailers that have aired here so far, I’ve only seen Yoyo once and that was in the exclusive TVB USA Hotlook trailer — but that was only for a few seconds.

Also, in most of the articles I’ve read about the series, very few of them mention Yoyo…honestly, why don’t they just edit her out of the series completely? Better yet, just don’t air the series period — the series had already been sitting in the warehouse for 2 years, so what difference would a few more years make?

      1. What does the image look like now?
And if they do edit all of Yoyo’s scenes, they will need to refilm the drama.

That’s why I don’t think her scenes were cut down even more… because if they did, then Ruco, Ron, Aimee would need to film those extra scenes. And as far as I am concerned, Aimee hasn’t filmed anything yet..

      2. I don’t think anyone’s scene is cut. They just focus on Aimee as the “lead actress”, that’s all, much like how Last Steep Ascent was.

      3. @Bubblez: The image is still the same — Ruco and Aimee together along with Ron, then Eddie and Kenny (figured out that the other person is Kenny — he has the full ATF gear on, so it was hard to recognize him).

Of course they probably are not going to edit out Yoyo’s scenes, since the series probably won’t make sense if they do (though to be honest, it’s not like they haven’t butchered the editing before to the point of affecting the series’ flow). But it does suck that Aimee once again got the ‘first lead’ spot (on the female side) due to Yoyo’s departure.

In any case, I will probably still watch this series mainly because of Ruco, Eddie, Louise, Yoyo, and some of the supporting cast…don’t care much about Ron and if Aimee gets too annoying, I guess I’ll just have to forward through her scenes like I’ve been doing with practically everything else she’s been in…

      4. Mhm.

Honestly, I don’t really mind who leads in ROE.
All I hope is that Yoyo is able to shine in her role in this drama and leaves a memorable moment for all the people who supports her since this is her last representative work for TVB (:

    7. aimee’s acting in “The Last Steep Ascent” was okay … but does not mean it is not irritating or annoying.

  2. O great, I have to skip one more series because of Aimee. I’ve skipped outbound love because she is the only Ruco’s love interest. Hopefully in ROE yoyo has more interaction with Ruco so I can skip Aimee’s part.

    1. Why give up a whole barrel of apples because of one bad apple? I think ROE will be an interesting drama, very male dominated so you’ll probably not see that much of Aimee (fingers crossed). Ruco looks super fit and super hot in this! Not to be missed by any Ruco fan.

      1. Agree with rofl. Ita, give “Ruse of Engagement” a try before passing judgement. The first 5 episodes usually set the tone for a series.

“Ruco looks super fit and super hot in this! Not to be missed by any Ruco fan.”

Agree, I love Ruco’s athletic side! Very manly!

      2. I agree Jayne, Ruco’s very athletic and manly……..drools……..deadly combination for a man, too hot to handle. Be prepared to swoon over this eye candy.

      3. one bad apple is quite hard to tolerate, especially if the character has to appear in most of the important scenes, sigh =( … it is really annoying to watch much as i would like to fast forward the scenes like in Outbound Love and every other show, but i still have to sit around tolerating the show just in case the next good scene appears =/ … will just have to reserve the show for dinner time “half watching half eating” … can look at my food when i dont want to watch the screen =/

i will still watch the ROE anyway because i love the entire cast =) … except for one =/ … but it is really sad and a pity that if an entire good cast is ruin by just one bad apple, as in many of the shows ;-( … Outbound Love would have been better if someone else took the place.

      4. Agree rofl. In outbound love I gave it a try and gave up after 7 episodes (I think, can’t remember exactly). Anyway, I hope Aimee will not ruin another Ruco series!

  3. Just as predicted, this series will revolve around more on Aimee than Yoyo. This may or may not be her representative work, who knows. But honestly I think Aimee can be a good actress only if she comes across the right roles appropriate for her. None of her recent works have been really impressive especially since her roles were just love interests. Hopefully in this one she’ll be something more.

Excited for this to air, this may be another role for Ruco to shine. They couldn’t have casted the male leads any better for an action packed series.

    1. Yes, Ruco’s physique makes him very suitable for action roles. I’d love to see him in more police dramas, he handles all the action scenes effortlessly and is so darn hot and sexy in them.

  4. Good grief, without makeup, Ruco looks like an old man!

    1. He always looks like that when he smiles.

When he’s not smiling he’s extremely hot.

  5. looking for this drama…especially Ruco, Ron, Yoyo and other support actor/actress…but not aimee!

  6. Aimee’s acting has always been horrible but its gonna be much worse here since this was filmed 2 years ago!

  7. damn, should have been a spoiler alert in this, just mentioned that Ka Ruco’s character dies in this. 🙁

  8. I really want to see Yoyo and Ron. I will have to watch 1ep and if Amiee ruin it i will just stop watching.

  9. cant wait to watch Ron and Ruco together but not so for Aimee…. repesentative work again huh ? i cant imagine how bad it will be that it will remain in our memory – not to watch it.

  10. I’m quite dismayed every time i read comments by fans of Ruco saying that they’ll not watch his drama if they don’t fancy his co-stars. For me, I’ll support him unconditionally. Whether i like his co-star or not, i’ll still support his dramas especially this one where a lot of blood sweat and tears were shed in filming it, not only from Ruco but by the other cast members. I remember reading in Jaynestars that Ruco injured his eye, filming this. Much as i dislike Aimee’s acting, I’ll be watching this!

    1. “I’m quite dismayed every time i read comments by fans of Ruco saying that they’ll not watch his drama if they don’t fancy his co-stars.”

      ^ I agree with this. (:

    2. I am afraid it shows he is often paired with people fans don’t want to see and know the pairing won’t amount to much. I will still watch but frankly I may also switch off the TV.

    3. i will still watch this drama because i like the entire cast =) … except for the one member of the cast, sigh =(

actually, i think so far there is only one of his co-star that fans do not fancy – until the level of not watching the drama or turning off the tv … fans dont seem to have a problem with all the other previous co-stars, just this one and only one.

hopefully Yoyo still have a big portion of the female lead in ROE, or else i might really walk away from the tv, which is really sad because i really really love to watch the rest of the cast members ;-( … why must they produce dramas that shatter the expectation and desire of audiences , sigh =(

  11. I will watch this one because Ruco is just too freaking HOT!!! My gosh! I haven’t watch Aimee act for a long time so I hope she don’t annoy me like u all say for outbound love.

  12. Like Ruco very very much. Will definitely watch this drama because of him no matter who is his co-star(s).
