“The Grandmaster” Wins 12 Awards at 2014 Hong Kong Film Awards
The 33rd Annual Hong Kong Film Awards was held on April 13 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Grand Theatre. Directed by Wong Ka Wai (王家衛), martial arts action film, The Grandmaster <一代宗師>, swept twelve awards and was the biggest winner in Hong Kong’s film history. Female lead of the film, Zhang Ziyi (章子怡), won Best Actress for the ninth time. Meanwhile, Nick Cheung (張家輝) won Best Actor for his performance in Unbeatable <激戰>, making it his second win. Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress went to Max Zhang (張晉) and Kara Hui (惠英紅), respectively.
As the awards presenter for Best Actress, Nick praised all the nominees including Zhang Ziyi, Tang Wei (湯唯), and Paw Hee Ching (鮑起靜), before announcing the year’s grand winner. Regarding Zhang Ziyi, he remarked, “Everyone calls her ‘International Zhang’. I noticed she has already reached international levels when I watched her outstanding performance in The Grandmaster for the first time. She has a very high chance of receiving the award.”
Adding to the exciting atmosphere, Nick spilled one of The Grandmaster’s classic quotes to reveal Zhang Ziyi as the winner. In all smiles, Zhang Ziyi took turns hugging her costars including Tony Leung Chiu Wai (梁朝偉), Chang Chen (張震), Max Zhang, Ada Choi (蔡少芬), and director Wong Ka Wai, before heading onstage to claim her award. In midst of taking deep breaths, she uttered her speech of gratitude towards the cast and crew of The Grandmaster.
Zhang Zi Yi expressed in tears, “In the summer of 2009, I received a call and found out Director Wong wants me in a film. I jumped around happily as I informed my family members. Over the next three years, I experienced many things and shed many tears. I know that sometimes it’s okay to fall, as long as you believe you’re still walking down the same road. I am very excited today, not because of how much turmoil I have been through, but because of my gratitude to all of you who have been on this road with me.”

To whom this may concern:
I think there is an error in the title.
“Sweep” means winning every major award and The Grand Master certainly did not achieve that.
What movie is this???
major awards are best director, best film, best actor and actress, best supporting actor and actress, best screenplay.
and you are correct, they didn’t sweep since nick cheung wasn’t best actor for grandmaster.
I genuinely feel that The Grandmaster did not deserve ALL of its awards (yes, I did watch the film). Certainly not Best Film, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor. Unbeatable, Dante Lam and Eddie Peng were more deserving of those honours. This year’s awards feels like a rip-off, just like last year’s.
Well, the HKFA is sort of a consolation price for Wong Kar Wai after GM was totally dissed at the Oscar (yes some had expected it to get nominated) and the Golden Horse.
The HKFA has always been a “rip-off” as the awardees are very predictable.
Love Nick in unbeatable but think his acting skills was more top notch in the white storm
i dont understand why this guy has come to this far,im never impressed by his acting or physical appearence.altough he had pumped himself up like arnold swarzenegger he simply lacks the height to impress.its a pity that louis hadnt won the best actor, but who am i to judge.
Nick is one of the best actors in hk he has always been a leading man and had a name in hk and in the last few year has made really good movies
must a fighter have a good height? you watched too many western movies..
yea, he’s better in white storm, although I like unbeatable more in terms of movie watching..
haha lol!!! For real, i did’t notice at first! What in the world were they thinking….!!!
Ahahahaha……I love your comment! Such silly names. What will they call themselves next?
Baby John? Imagine when he is in his 50s above and ppl calls him Baby John?
Whether he’d remain in the entertainment industry in the next 30 years remains to be seen. Otherwise, no one cares if people calls him Baby at 50.
His name is actually a reference to a character in the musical, West Side Story who is named Baby John. He named himself that as a reminder to always stay true to your beginnings and to yourself.
That’s an ugly dress on Zhang Zi Yi! She looks like a reptile.
She aged a lot too….wrong dress for the occasion, for sure…
Who does not age? But whether you age well or not is a different story. Her other dresses were nicer than this one. Congrats to all of the winners. There were many tough competitors for the Best actor category so it is great that Nick won(but I must say that I hoped for Tony to win since he is one of my most favorite actors do all time).
Congratulations to all the winners of 33rd Annual Hong Kong Film Awards
The speeches were so long, the ceremony so quiet. Zhang Ziyi’s speech was just strange and to me pretentious. HK film awards and most movies have mainland chinese actors/actresses. I do love Ada’s reaction to her husband’s win. And whilst I was hoping Anthony Wong might win, I suppose at the end of the day instead of old Ip Man vs young Ip Man, they gave it to a boxer!
THe hosts were weird though but at times quite funny.
Agree, not much chemistry between the hosts and the presenters either. Seems awkward most of the time, which usually happen in most award shows I watched.
Didn’t watch the award, but love your comment about giving it to the boxer. I saw unbeatable on the flight just last Friday and thought Nick Cheung was great in it. Love it. Well deserving in my view.
Really Puff? I really trust your opinion so will try to see that movie when I get the chance,
It is great that Max won. I am so happy for him that he is getting more recognition. I still remember him from paradise. We still call him Tong Xin(the name of the character he played) instead of his real name.
Awww thanks for trusting my opinion HTS. Truthfully, I was surprise that the movie was available on a BA flight, and curious about the fight scene and of course the infamous buff bodies of Nick and Eddie.
Then as the film progress, I started to enjoy more. It’s a typical uplifting, fighting human spirit between 3 relationships with Nick, but brilliantly portrayed and for those who remembers Nick’s early comedic work you’ll get a taste of it here. It’s so easy for this type of film to be overly melodramatic, but this has a good balance of humour injected to it, but treated the dramatic side with respect. I also like the chemistry between the characters, especially the little girl and Nick.
Oh I also love the use of Simon & Garfunkel’s song, the sounds of silence, and yes the buff bodies 😉
But really, I think Nick owns this film. So many different type of emotions, portrayed really well, seemingly inspired him to go from strength to strength, while at the same time inspired me. Beautiful, in spirit and finally I’ll repeat, in bodies.
Yea, I really trust your opinion Puff and thanks for the info and your thoughts as well. I remember how much Nick sacrificed for this role and movie so happy that he won. I must say that all of the nominees for the best actor were really strong compared to the best actress. But congrats to them all and so happy for everyone that has won.
Now, I must see this boxer movie. 🙂
I didn’t know Ada’s husband won until this morning I heard it on the radio. I forgot her husband’s name and didn’t recognise the name 張晉 on the list. Congrats!
Sorry, name is Unbeatable! Was on ASTRO and sorta enjoyed it except it is not really about boxing. But the bodies… woahhhh…
I didn’t even know he was Ada’s husband until they zoomed to Ada.
Works both ways. Mainland films are now mostly pan-Asian, with work opportunities for HK, Taiwanese or Korean cast and crew.
I felt Loius should get one. About damn time.
Jackie Chan was funny. Stating he also never got best actor here. Lmao.
Overall, not a great ceremony, I wonders those come so early had dinner?
film awards are a joke anyway. they almost always give it to local films even though some of the movies are garbage, the same for local actors and actresses. oscars will always go to an american film.
Yes, I agree. A lot of asian film fans get upset over not being nominated in the Oscars, but I don’t understand why they care so much. China limits the amount of foreign movies into their market and the Oscars is biased toward their own films. It works both ways.
Also Zhang Zi Yi winning for the 9th time. Ugh. Hong Kong film is so limited now it’s kinda sad. I can predict who will star in the all the films now.
Huang Xiao Ming (in all the movies)
Angelababy
Nick Cheung with either Sean lau or Louis Koo
Zhang Zi Yi
Mark Chao
China limits the amount of foreign movies into their market and the Oscars is biased toward their own films. It works both ways.

ever heard of censorship?
Best HK actor nominations /awards always limited to the same people year after year: Nick Cheung, Lau Ching Wan, Tony Leung, Anthony Wong.
There is no better actors in Hong Kong, I guess!?
HK movie industry is very very small, the actors seem to be on rotation. Either that or add in mainland actors or taiwanese actors.
I felt Sammi Cheng deserve to win . She did very well in Blind Detective
i really wanted sammi to win too but with zhang ziyi’s 8-wins for her role in GM, it doesn’t make sense for hkfa to present this to sammi. i would rather sammi get it another time where everyone feels she is most deserving.
imo, she should have won last year. or the year where she had 3 nominations.
Congratulations: The Grand Master & to Ms. Zhang Ziyi! Such an awesome film & such a talented Actress! I do like Grand Master because it’s all about Wing Chun mixed w/ a love story. I’m an avid fan of Chinese Martial Arts ever since and they deserve those awards! Great tho. :DD.
Boring as hell! Old ipman movie was way, way better….
Such a dissapointment. This just shows that there are no good Chibese films in 2013.
So glad that Nick Cheung won the award for best actor. At one point I thought Tony Leung would grab it.
Me too, given that so many awards went to GM and really glad that Nick Cheung got it. I didn’t watch GM but don’t think it is really that great to win so many awards.
The whole show was mainly circulating around GM, the dance and the zombie movie. Find it quite boring to be always the few movies grabbing most the attention and awards.
If u hv trouble sleeping, watch GM….u will sleep like a baby after 20 min….
Don’t really agree with most of those wins.
GM was good, but not THAT good.
I am happy that Kara Hui got an award as she has had a rough year and that movie was probably not enjoyable to make.
haha. Who the hell names these people or did they pick those names for themselves?
Does Angelababy really think she will be taken seriously with a name like that? I wont respect her or pay attention to her work until she changes it. Her name has always bugged me since I saw her on Beautiful Cooking. That’s a name for a model, not an actress who wants to be taken seriously.
Angelababy was her nickname before the whole wave of BB nicknames came to other artistes.
Her name is more suitable for a stripper. Honestly, Chinese and Filipinos have the weirdest English names.
Chinese people in Asia have weird english names. Water, Kingdom, Orange, Mango, Tavia, Myolie, Cake, Bosco, Blue, Rainbow, Banana, etc. Deal with it.
chinese? filipino?
I think you guys are forgetting prince and his symbol? that’s about 10000 times weirder than angelababy.
Why are Tavia and Myolie considered weird?
I would narrow this down to HK celebs adopting the weirdest English names.
Most Mainland celebs don’t adopt English names: Zhang Ziyi, Huang Xiao Ming, etc.
Terminator,
Myolie, Tavia(have doubts about Tavia, though), and Bosco are not really words, let alone these are western names.
Water, Kingdom, Orange, etc are words, but all these are used as names by the Chinese.
With regard to your comment on Mainland artists, give them another 20 years more, and you will then see different types of western names being invented by Mainland people.
Terminator,
Some mainland celebs already have western names like Tiffany, Cecilia, Vickie, Aloys, William, Kevin, Justin, Ashton, Jane, Chris, Sunny, Summer, Demon.
>>Why are Tavia and Myolie considered weird?<<
because nobody else have it. these are not even western names.
According to the Baby Name websites:
Tavia
Origin: English & Latin
Diminutive form of Octavia
http://www.babynames.com/name/Tavia
http://www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/0/Tavia
I don’t find Bosco weird. It’s based on a surname. Many people has name that originates from a surname.
HK movies have two genres: Kung Fu and Gangs. They need some great drama movies that can contend for the US Oscar!
agree, kung fu,gangs, and catIII.there is a lack of creativity and fantasy in the hk cinema.personally i love the hollywood movies more than hk movies nowadays, because hollywood simply have more genres with good stories and better special effects.
people can say the same about american movies: all the same: guns, blown up buildings and sex. whoop-de-do.
Other common genres are gambling, comedies and undercover cop. At least this year there are 2 about firefighters.
Was hoping As the Light Goes Out’s oi zui dai could win the best song or in other nominations. I enjoyed the movie and the song, maybe partly because of my bias towards Nicholas.
Almost all the hollywood movies I have watched are action movies with a mission, like National Treasure, Mummy, Race to Witch Mountain etc
Not sure whether Disney and other animation like Pixar are considered Hollywood, but they are the other type of Western movies that I like.
“”Female lead of the film, Zhang Ziyi (章子怡), won Best Actress for the ninth time.””
is this true? 9th time???
I heard the person mentioned about 2nd time and 9th time. The 9th time might mean the 9th award given to GM or she has been nominated 9 times. Didn’t hear clearly but doesn’t seem very plausible that she got 9 times best actress.
That part wasn’t written well. This is Zhang Ziyi’s 2nd HKFA win, but cumulatively, it is her 9th Best Actress award this year (counting all the awards she won at the various award ceremonies throughout Asia). Hope this clarifies….
She won 9 Best Actress Awards for her role in The Grandmaster in the past year or so at various film festivals and award ceremonies.
LOL yea hahaha didn’t notice much when they announced BabyJohn, it does seem funny now lol
Personally don’t think Zhang ZiYi was that great in the grandmaster, but I haven’t watched all the other movies to know who is more deserving. I thought grandmaster is totally over-rated, but of course aesthetically beautiful film.
Jayne, will you be doing a fashion review of this event? Please do, please.
I agree.
Puff,
The fashion review for HKFA will be posted shortly. Stay tuned!
Thanks Jayne. Can’t wait
Zhang Zi Yi has won 9 times? different awards i guess but i didn’t know she won that many times…
Nick has always been an extremely good actor one of the best in HK in history and on of the best from his generation by far winning best actor awards go nick
His name is actually a reference to a character in the musical, West Side Story who is named Baby John. He named himself that as a reminder to always stay true to your beginnings and to yourself.
I believe every award depends on luck and who are the judges that year. I think every year, we have similar people acting, I agree the industry is kinda small.
But on a lighter note, I am still glad that HK movies are still around, after serious pirating of movies in last 10 years.
Imagine non of them act anymore one day, I believe you will miss them from then on
Just like most people dont treasure what they already have. But well thats human nature
To All : Treasure what you have, and watch movies like a pass time, live will be happier 🙂
First off, congrats to all the winners! Not really going to comment whether they were deserving or not, since I didn’t watch all the nominated films, but unlike many of the other HK awards ceremonies, I truly enjoyed this ceremony and felt genuinely happy for the winners.
I actually felt that the hosts did a pretty good job — they were quite funny and I felt they had pretty good chemistry. My favorite hosting segment was when Teresa Mo lugged that big ole suitcase on stage and the guys kept commenting how ugly it was — then Teresa said the same thing I was thinking in my head at that time: her husband Tony Au (himself a famous cinematographer and art director) would never let her buy such an ugly suitcase…LOL.
Overall, other than the acceptance speeches, my most favorite segment of the night was Cheung Tat Ming’s stand-up routine. It was so great to see him back in action! Oh and his comedic timing was as good as ever!
My biggest complaint: the editing of the show was HORRIBLE! Damn TVB cut out so much stuff again (some of the cuts were so darn sloppy too…at least let the person finish their speech…geez!)…looks like TVB got complacent again and went crazy with the editing. I really wish HKFA had a ‘no editing’ clause in their contracts with the TV stations… 🙁
Can someone translate his full speech? I really want to know what he said…! Its so touching to see Ada being so happy for her hubby…. Thanks in advance!
