Bosco Wong Believes that Men Shouldn’t Be Useless

Bosco Wong (黃宗澤) has been acting in television dramas since 2000, and has taken on a variety of different characters – starting from small non-speaking roles to dashing leads. After acting for more than a decade, Bosco is now more interested in roles that are similar to real life.

“I think it’s interesting that producers tend to think of me when a role that’s similar to an everyday man comes up. Perhaps it’s because I grew up living in public housing, so they think I’m similar to the character and would give it a more realistic feeling,” Bosco stated when he talked about his upcoming movie based on the popular novel, Men Can’t Be Poor <男人唔可以窮>. The novel resonated with readers as the protagonist lost his job and broke up with his girlfriend. His father died later, making it more difficult for him to start his life anew and find his own self-worth in a competitive job market.

Bosco has filmed many emotional scenes in past works, but none compared to the death scene of his onscreen father, played by Liu Kai Chi (廖啟智). Bosco could not stop crying the first time they filmed the bedside scene, and had difficulties regaining his composure even after the cameras stopped rolling.

Bosco explained that the most important aspect is that men should not be useless. Even if one is poor, one could live a happy life as long as he has a determined attitude and right mindset. “For men, it’s essential that they have goals, for example, when to complete something by a certain age. It doesn’t have to be a number, as long as you set a standard for yourself.”

Once his career is further established, Bosco hopes to have the ability to choose projects based on his own interests. Bosco also does not regard himself as being handsome and believes that he is only decent to look at. He is focused on polishing his acting skills and prefers portraying a slightly unruly role, rather than the traditional handsome character.

Striving for continuous improvement in his life, Bosco works tirelessly to achieve his goals. Demonstrating his achievements outside of acting, Bosco opened his own oyster bar earlier and enjoys shopping for groceries and cooking his own meals.

    1. LOLOL I read the title of the article and immediately thought, dafauq, since when is it not important for any person, men and women, to not be useless??!!…..

      1. Yup, life lessons from a playboy. He can talk the talk but can he walk the walk. LOL!

      2. Totally agree that whether it be a man or a woman, who wants to be useless????

  1. “Bosco explained that the most important aspect is that men should not be useless.”

Totally agree!!! And, should not be a dog (like Wen Zhang) too. haha 🙂

  2. I agree that Bosco Wong may be one of the siu sangs, who does not care too much of his good-looking face. He is willing to act all kinds of characters, including the “crippled CO Gor”.

    1. Of course he cares about his looks. That pays the bills. Image means everything to a playboy.

      1. Of course he should care his look to a certain extent to maintain his image as a siu sang.

      2. Typo. It should read “Of course he should care about his look to a certain extent to maintain his image as a siu sang.”

      3. He does care about his image. I actually think his one of the few who pays attention to what he’ll wear.

Lol goals? He clearly said he’s not aiming for Best Actor award nor is he ambitious to get any breakthrough roles. I still find Bosco not a bad person or actor though.

His also not hungry for fame. All these years he implies that the hk media are annoying and by becoming more famous does it make HK Media annoy him less? Don’t think so.
Let’s put it this way. Bosco does acting because he wants to be rich, gain enough money to fund his Oyster restaurant.

      4. Who does not care about their looks to some extent? But of course, looks are even more important for actors and models who rely on their looks to make a living. Who does not want to make big bucks in their profession???

      5. Not all actors rely on their looks for a living. Some like Wayne Lai uses his acting talent, Dayo Wong his comedian skills and even Fred Cheng for his singing abilities. And to some extent they are much more famous than Bosco

    2. I disagree. What is too special with Crippled Co to say it wasn’t for good-looking face? Crippled Co is crippled, his face is the same.

  3. I think Bosco is really a talented actor, and perhaps one of the most versatile one amongst the current siu sangs. I think tvb does not make good use of his talent much.

    1. I agree that Bosco is talented. I wish that he can go to China and make more use of his talent there.

    2. i agree. his acting is very good and he looks really good.

  4. Perhaps it may not sound as duh in Cantonese. I get what he means and he is right.

  5. yeah i agree what he said men shouldn’t be useless they should do stuff at home not just sit there and do nothing
i get what he is taking about

    1. It is not only men but women too. Who wants to be useless???

      1. Agree! Why can’t Bosco just say nobody should be useless?

  6. ““I think it’s interesting that producers tend to think of me when a role that’s similar to an everyday man comes up. “

I really love his portrayal of single father who need to struggle for a living in Coffee Mama. That character was everyday man enough, and he was convincing as the character.

  7. hi there

    1. good on bosco.
    2. he is one the “watchable” siu sans” nowadays.
    3. he is extremely good in comedy roles.
