Hawick Lau and Yang Mi Welcome Baby Girl

Celebrity couple Hawick Lau (劉愷威) and Yang Mi (楊冪) welcomed their first child on June 1! Nicknamed “Little Sticky Rice”, the baby girl came just one day before the Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on June 2 this year. She weighed approximately seven pounds at birth.

Hawick was the first to deliver the joyful news via his Weibo in the afternoon, writing, “Welcome the new member to the Lau family! Mama has worked hard! Mother and daughter are safe! Thankful! Happy International Children’s Day to our little sticky rice and all the children around the world!”

Yang Mi began experiencing labor pains on May 31 and was brought to the Hong Kong Adventist Hospital. She wanted a natural birth, but her obstetrician advised her that it would be safer to deliver through a Cesarean section because the baby’s head was too big. Hawick was in the delivery room throughout the process, providing support for Yang Mi. Hawick was in tears of joy as he cut the umbilical cord.

Hawick’s father, veteran actor Lau Dan (劉丹), greeted the reporters with a wide grin as he stepped out of the hospital’s entrance to greet the press. Lau Dan expressed that Hawick will not be making a public appearance anytime soon, and will be spending the next few days taking care of Yang Mi. In regards to Yang Mi’s current condition, Lau Dan said, “She’s very tired. She’s been sleeping the past few hours.” Lau Dan also said that Yang Mi has been craving a lot of food, but because the anesthesia from her Cesarean section has not completely worn off yet, she is unable to eat anything for the time being.

Asked who the baby girl resembles more, Lau Dan laughed and said, “My wife and I have different opinions on this. I think her lips look like Hawick’s, but my wife thinks it looks like Yang Mi’s.”

Lau Dan said he has not held his granddaughter yet. “Not yet, but I observed from afar! When I first saw the baby, I was touched, and at that moment I couldn’t say anything. The only thing I can think of is, wow, she’s my granddaughter!”

A name for the baby has not been decided yet. Lau Dan said they are currently brainstorming and will seek the help of a professional feng shui master for the baby’s Chinese name.

Yang Mi’s parents and Hawick’s younger sister also visited the newborn girl today. The press was unable to speak directly to Hawick, but his representative indicated that Yang Mi will be leaving the hospital on June 5, 2014.
