Wong Kar Wai to Adapt Online Novel for Next Feature Film
Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar Wai (王家衛) is currently planning a new project for 2015. Wong plans to adapt the online short story Ferryman <擺渡人>, written by Zhang Jiajia (張嘉佳). Ferryman centers around a turbulent affair between a woman and a married artist from Changchan. The story is part of an online fiction series called I Belonged to You <從你的全世界路過>, a collection of love stories that was originally published on the Internet as the “bedtime series” franchise.
Wong’s latest film was 2013’s The Grandmaster <一代宗師>, a martial arts drama film based on the life story of wing chun master Ip Man. The film won multiple awards, including Best Actress for Zhang Ziyi (章子怡), at prominent film awards throughout Asia.
On June 23, Zhang Jiajia confirmed Wong’s interest to make a film adaptation of the short story. In Zhang’s Weibo message, he also implied that there may be more adaptations from the I Belonged to You series in the future. He also wrote, “Our cast is definitely the biggest cast in the last ten years.”
Producer Patrick Tong (唐慶枝) of Mei Ah Entertainment was asked to confirm if Wong would once again work with longtime collaborator, Tony Leung (梁朝偉). Of the ten films Wong had made since 1988 debut film As Tears Go By <旺角卡門>, Tony has starred in seven of them. Patrick Tong expressed that the male lead of the film will be one that “all women will go crazy for”, but declined to say whether the lead was Tony Leung.

I guess we have to wait for another 10 years to watch this film…
If that were the case, he better not use Tony Leung because the dude might no longer be around to promote the film when it premieres. LOL!
Nowhere in the article does it say the movie is centered around a ‘turbulent affair’. The story is about a woman named Xiaoyu who harbours romantic feelings for a married artist, but those feelings are not reciprocated. It’s a one-sided love story, not an affair.
