Francis Ng Praised for Military-Style Parenting Method
Since the second season of parenting reality show, Dad, Where Are We Going? <爸爸去哪兒?>, started airing in mid-June, Francis Ng (吳鎮宇) and his five-year-old son Feynman Ng received much attention from viewers. The pair’s popularity soared as Francis earned continuous praise for his intense parenting method, which proved to be very different from other fathers.
Hoping his son will learn to become independent by facing challenges, Francis often appeared aggressive and strict. Thus, media tabloids referred to his parenting method as military-style. Throughout the show, Francis’ scolding over little matters often made Feynman cry. Compared to the four other fathers in the show, Francis’ parenting style stood out in contrast. Despite his strict attitude, viewers could see that Francis is a caring father who instructs his son well.
In the second episode of the show, participants had to play soccer in a deep field of mud. Feynman ended up covered in mud and started crying when Francis forcefully tore off his shirts at once rather than layer by layer. Another time, Feynman dropped his cup while brushing his teeth. He was scared to get near his father, since Francis was angrily scolding him. However, Francis later felt he was too harsh and changed his attitude. He hugged his son, told him he loved him, and gave an apology.
Francis did not mind that the media labeled his teaching method as military-style. He exclaimed, “No problem! This is how you teach children!” In response to all the comments praising him for being a great father, Francis expressed that Feynman’s school provided good education. When reporters added he was also part of the teachings, he replied humbly, “If you guys think so!”

Feynman doesn’t seem too responsive to Francis whenever his father is talking to him. Overall, Feynman seems to give very slow responses and choppy sentences with whatever language he’s speaking compare to other children who speaks fluently and at ease.
I’m sorry, but didn’t you know Feynman was born in Hong Kong, so speaks cantonese?? How do you expect a 5 year old boy to be able to speak mandarin properly! Francis sometimes speaks mandarin to him, because it is a mainland show, but also in english. lol, were you even watching the show propery?
lol no need to be rude. Stop trying to act all smart; no one likes you ugly.
But there living in Singapore.
No they dont. His son will live in Singapore when he starts school. He’s only 5 atm.
Even when he speaks in Cantonese, English too.
When Francis talks to him in Cantonese too Feynman doesn’t really respond to him. He would make some weird noise or face and just very short, non flowing sentences IMO.
It’s just my observation/opinion
@daess, Feyman got mild autism which explained everything ……Thumbs up to Francis for bringing his son to DWAWG2 whereby we can see how hehas brought up & tutored Feyman as any normal kid….
are you just guessing or was it reported/said by Francis himself?
But if so, that explains so much.
Isn’t military style parenting already passe?
Passe? No wonder we have so many BRATS around…
**We always talk about leaving our kids a better earth, what about leaving the earth better kids?**
It’s still popular among mainland chinese
Well, whatever make kids stay grounded 😀 I wouldn’t call my grandpa’s style is military, but he does beat me up a bit for a long time for tiny mistake I do, though it’s only occasional, it was enough to keep me grounded and appreciate him as I grow older. I’m sure the kid will appreciate his father for what he’s doing now when he grows up 🙂
That’s provided the very thin line betw military-style and abuse is not crossed. On the flip side, too many parents spare the rod and spoil the child these days. Parenting is tough!
Yup 🙂 it’s not like he hit me all the time :p I knew very well why I was getting the beating. With so many rules and laws these days, parenting is indeed very hard 🙂 too soft, your child gone spoil rotten, too hard, and you are in trouble with the law >_> and those judgemental parents >_>”
@LF, I’m curious, did yr grandpa beat up the girls eg yr female cousins or sisters too?
Right? This is the 21st century.
Hmmm…this article is a bit misleading. After watching 3 episodes of the show, I would hardly call Francis’ style “military” — in fact, he rarely even scolded his son. It’s just the way he talks is more direct and rough (meaning that he doesn’t mince words or talk to his son in a soft tone like other parents might)….plus he doesn’t ‘baby’ his son or overprotect him. And the part about Feynman crying and Francis forcefully “tearing off his son’s shirts” was definitely exaggerated (I’m sure those who watched that segment will know how it really went down).
Francis actually did a more in depth interview a few days ago with a magazine where he talks about his parenting style as well as his experience so far on “Dad, Where Are We Going” — it’s actually a very interesting interview and quite a worthwhile read. After reading that interview, it makes more sense why Francis parents his son the way he does.
Yeah, the media likes to exaggerate his parenting style. I saw all 3 episodes and thought the way he talked to his son was pretty normal. In fact, I felt that the other pairs of father and child were a little pretentious at times, except the Olympic chap who seems most natural. Anyway, Feynman is super cute. The way he behaves and some of the things he says is so Singaporean 🙂
Parents like this is the worst part of working in a Pediatric Clinic. Military-style parenting produce gangs and drug dealers.

Everyone can watch this video and decide for themselves if Francis’ style is military.
Looks like all the kids love francis
Man bun doesn’t look good, i see so many men sporting men buns. Hope this trend soon passes.
