Yang Mi is a Dictating and Arrogant Daughter-in-Law?

Since marrying Hawick Lau (劉愷威) and giving birth to their baby daughter, several reports suggested that Yang Mi (楊冪) posed as a difficult daughter-in-law. Having spent the first month of her postpartum recovery under the same roof as Hawick’s parents, Yang Mi was allegedly dictating and arrogant, resulting in numerous conflicts.

When Yang Mi had her wedding with Hawick in Bali, Indonesia, there were already rumors that she did not get along with her in-laws. After one month of living with them in the Shatin district, she reportedly wanted to move out. Soon enough, the couple later relocated to a flat in Kowloon City, which is approximated to be worth $60 million HKD.

Although Hawick denied the family conflicts, it was said that Yang Mi’s differences with her in-laws became unbearable. According to tabloids, she always needed to have things her way. Hawick’s parents reportedly endured her behavior only because of their son and granddaughter.

Hawick’s Mother Acts as Nanny?

Last Monday, reporters spotted Yang Mi and Hawick in Kowloon City, ordering a cake for their baby daughter in time to celebrate her two-month arrival. In a white dress, Yang Mi browsed through a bakery with her husband by her side. Meanwhile, Hawick’s mother was spotted shopping for groceries and diapers. Carrying two bags all by herself, she seemed like a nanny instead.

  1. I’ve heard a lot of mainlanders are very spoilt from a male friend of mine from china. He says times have changed, if the above report is true, I wont be surprised esp when she thinks she is above average woman just because she’s an actress.

    1. Agreed. Especially if she’s the only child and from a well to do family…the so called over pampered child would be a nightmare for her in laws and pity her hub too to be stuck in the middle.

    2. Years ago when HK’ers were invading Vancouver Canada, they same was said about HongKongers : Rude and pushy.

      1. I don’t think any of the above comments said that mainlanders are rude and pushy. Maybe you took it the wrong way? But I can see how many native Canadians would see HKers, Asians, or even immigrants for that matter, as rude and pushy. The last time I checked, China is part of Asia, so I am pretty sure the complaints were not directed to HKers specifically. We are all Chinese, and are viewed the same by those who are not culturally-apt. But in my own experience, I have been culturally shocked when I was in China because of how people there don’t follow rules, case in point- I was in line, but a lady just come and cut in front of me. If you think mainland Chinese are not rude and pushy, you must not have been to China. HK, whether it is historically or currently, is still seen as a place where people can get good education, healthy food consumption, and live in a more civilized society. Why do you think there are still so many people who want to go to HK from mainland? There outta be a reason, right?

      2. @Jen,

Local Canadians gave Vancouver the nickname “Hongcouver” and not in a positive way. I just think it’s ironic that rude and loud HKer’s look down on rude and loud mainlanders.
Decades ago in the mid-70s, a big campaign was launched to educate HK’ers to stop tossing refuse on the ground, which resembled a litter storm when the wind picked up. Today, there are still some HKers who throw furniture away by tossing them out of high-rise windows.
If HK is so great as you imply, why do so many HKers want a foreign education in the west?

      3. I agree with both of you guys, Hker’s can be rude but people in China are much worst. From past experiences in China to Hong Kong & now in Australia they are just plain rude, loud & impatient not polite people. I had similar experiences when I was waiting in line for something in HK these mainlanders decided to cut the line and when I had a go at them the just put their ear phones on and pretend I’m not there. Hong Kong people are rude but I wouldn’t describe them as pushy more arrogant& judgemental.

      4. If HK is so great as you imply, why do so many HKers want a foreign education in the west?
        _________________________________________

Well, my thought is that because HK has been invaded by many of such mainlanders, and a majority of them immigrated in 1997.

      5. @ Jen C.

I don’t think msxie’s question is on emigration. His/her question is why Hong’ers continue to pursue their education in the West if HK were so great and had everything as purported. Many of those who had pursued western education do not necessarily emigrate and settle there.

    3. Got it, Terminator. Thanks for explaining. I think most Asians have the perception that a Western education is more “valuable,” despite even high standards such as the case in Singapore. I think Singapore has one of the better educational systems in Southeast Asia, but every year, there are still a number of students coming to the U.S. to pursue what seems to them, a “better” education. In some ways, I can agree, as the research and resources may at times be richer in the Western countries.

      1. Not sure if its true but I heard education is a lot tougher over there than say in England, along with the non ranking system its probably a less stressful environment to study in

  2. This is so sad to hear. Theirs was like a dream wedding for a dream couple…marriage life changes everything, huh?

    1. Only changes for the parents. If the son turns out to be listening to the wife only, then they lost their son. My circle of friends, 9 out of 10 listen to the wives/gfs. If the wives/gfs are considerate, they are fortunately. However, most of the time they will want things their way and the husband/bfs will follow. The guy’s parents will have to endure because they love the son and do not want to cause any problem to their relationship. If only more women and more men are considerate when in a relationship. For those dictator wives/gfs, please remember while u have parents, your other half has it too. What if ur bro’s gf/wife does that to your parents? Will you be happy?

      1. Not only that. They MUST REMEMBER they will gradually be in-laws too. There’s karma. Not only that. Children learn and do what they see from their parents. That would be too late to regret by then.

      2. really ? 9 out of 10 ? omg wat’s wrong wif guys these days….

      3. As a married man with kids, there’s a saying: “happy wife = happy life”

      4. “If the son turns out to be listening to the wife only, then they lost their son.”

Seems more like the Laus gained a DIL (and grandchild) but the Yangs lost a daughter.

Men who pursue a successful independent woman shouldn’t expect her to automatically take the back seat.

  3. heard someone said which is why divorce cases of young Chinese couples are high as they do not want to give in or tolerate each other since others have always been giving in to them since they were young..

  4. Go away Yang Mi, you are a spoilt brat. Zhang Ziyi is more down to earth, and she is an international star! Hate people who was arrogant and demanding particularly to the older folks!

    1. ZZY is more down to earth? We don’t know for sure. Many years ago she was sitting next to my MIL in a train leading them from one terminal to another in Changi and while gesturing to her assistant, she accidentally poked my MIL’s face. She then looked at my MIL and looked away without saying sorry. Even if she wasn’t in a good mood that day, she’s a public figure and it wont hurt to just apologize to uphold her image.

Linda Chung on the other hand, is a very polite and likeable girl. Again at Changi, she accidentally lightly bumped my MIL while she was rushing with another TVB star and she turned around and say in Cantonese ‘So sorry!’. This was last year.

      1. Linda Chung was brought up in Vancouver while the other one was not.

      2. Wow, I have to say mainlander stars do have an air of arrogant around them =_= and yes, agree that if you grow up in western country, common courtesy is highly value, especially Asian oversea, as we remember and pass down traditional value. Not 100% true, but generally speaking 🙂

      3. yes…Linda is a great personality, very pure and true person. Unlike ZZY, Yang Mi all these chinese actresses are fake.

      4. Seriously why on earth all these chinese actress I mean majority of them wants to play diva. Maybe they think they’re high and mighty. What’s so big deal being a celebrity, basic manners is a must no matter who you are.

      5. Don’t expect too much from others when you can’t give the same. So what if she’s bossy she’s paying the bills as well and also stick around to raise her child. Don’t see Hawick complain. LOL!

      6. Just because she is paying the bills does not mean that she can be bossy. We are talking about mannerism here. Pretty sure she is only “helping” because Lau Dan, his wife, and Hawick are not poor. Hawick should have known about her personality since they dated for awhile, but hey, he’s into that fake plastic beauty so he and his family are stuck with it. Feel bad for Lau Dan and his wife. Have watched many TVB series with Lau Dan in it and I don’t think he’s a bad in-law or else TVB stops hiring him. Yang Mi is not that hot and famous but she is already showing her diva attitude.

      7. “he’s into that fake plastic beauty so he and his family are stuck with it.”

LOL! They are not idiots but you are. It’s definitely about manners. Again don’t expect too much when you can’t give the same. She isn’t the only one that pays the bill. If she’s bossy someone has to let it happen. 😀 🙁 LOL!

      8. Ermm, I will just say perhaps your MIL should avoid airports and Chinese starlets in general for her own well-being. LOL. I think bad behaviour is often a combination of nature and nurture and not necessarily the “fault” of any single society or nation.

      9. not to defend arrogant obnoxious mainlanders, but HKers always had the air of being high and mighty toward the mainlanders, who are now behaving the same way in a role reversal of sorts. While the Brits treated HKers as second and third class citizens back in the early colonial days, HKers were obsequious and deferential to their British overlords, but snobby toward mainland Chinese and dark-skinned SE Asians.
Abuse toward Filipino and Indonesian maids by HKers is still common these days.

      10. Well, a lot of Chinese actresses/actors are rich. Most of the things in this world now are made in China, mostly raw mat from China. They are dominating the market. Perhaps one of the reason why these ppl think they are superior? Especially now with their single child policy, parents tend to spoil their one and only child and giving them all the luxury lifestyle they want. 2 incomes to feed 1 child. It is more than enough. But by the time for the child to feed 2 mouths, there’s when prob arises. Parents no longer instil good values like our folks did. Its more to “educate” with money and materialistic. Which is why, manners, respects are fading among them now… So pathetic.

  5. Seriously, it’s probably tabloids trying to stir up stuff when there’s nothing to talk about.

    1. Thank you! Considering the tabloid is from HK? HK have long held a grudge against mainland since the handover and what more now that the mainlanders are invading their rice bowl. Consider the source folks.

      1. you are so right, hk need to face the fact that they are chinese even when the time they were ruled by england. England of course is a luxury country and hk can look good. Since handing over to china, they over reacted and the grudge is also b/c a lot of hk male find second family in china and this has been in the history for a long long time.

  6. Reports of a Zhou Xun / Tony Leung/ Nic Tse triangle proved to be false. Let’s wait and see if reports about Yang Mi are fabrications before condemning her.

  7. Uhm, don’t think much of her, because some of the drama/movies she’s in, her acting was terrible. Let hope this is not true, otherwise, there nothing left to like this girl for. And I like hawick’s dad, he’s such a good actor 🙂

    1. Not to mention her acting, her singing was absolutely horrible. I don’t understand why some music company signed with her.

    2. Wake up and smell the beans. They don’t make them like they used to. It’s all about green and the more the better. 😀

  8. I don’t think Yang Mi would want to settle down this soon if wasn’t for her unexpected pregnancy. Anyway, these mainlander Chinese are spoilt, rude, lack of manner and so full of themselves.

  9. She is a star nevertheless. I like her. Wish her luck…anyone seen the new American family group United States Monarchy? I saw them perform in TST last New Years and I heard they may be doing TV show in Hong Kong. They are awesome family.

  10. seriously she deserve a career crash rock bottom … her behaviour is not accepted…

  11. I think, the truly rude people are the ones here condemning all mainlander Chinese based on un-confirmed reports. There are black sheep in every community. People are so quick to jump on the train and criticize when they haven’t got the facts right…

  12. I hope this is false and their marriage lasts. They look like such a cute and sweet couple. Besides we don’t know what really going on behind close doors. It could be the in-law mistreating her and forcing to leave? Who knows! But it’s ridiculous to stereotype all “mainlanders” because some paps news. Even if this is true, that’s one mainlander actress/girl out of millions! Don’t throw away a whole fruit basket because of one rotten tomato, peeps. Shesh.

    1. True, however, most of us brush up against some mainlanders one way or another, and got the attitude overview from their behavior, then the paps come and said a mainlander actress act like how we experienced dealing with commoner mainlanders, so not because of the mag that we think mainlanders that way. It’s how they acted normally, and we read the mags and confirm that if this is true, it’s normal lol.

I think we got the view backward 🙂 but that could just be me 🙂

      1. Ah, I can understand why one would think all mainlanders have bad attitude if one ran into rude mainlanders personally. However, that still doesn’t mean all mainlanders are really like that – just saying 😉

      2. We know, and I agree generalization is bad, but it does sum up a group of people well. Like I know stereotype is bad, but to me, stereotype is a matter of fact, it help you grasp a quick overview of a population’s behaviors 🙂 as long as you are not closed minded and being rude to other, and become judgmental before getting to know the other person 🙂

  13. I never liked her personality when I saw her on Happy Camp. She seems to have a strong character. Very different from her looks which is cute and sweet. Well, if it’s true then it’s Harwick who is blind. But if it’s not Yang Mi it will still be a mainlander since he’s basically based in China already.

    1. Saw that show too and agree with you. William Feng was rumoured to like her a lot but I bet he’s happy nothing eventuate. She was only good in ‘Gong’, everything after that is nothing much.

I don’t think Hawick had a serious girlfriend for a long time and when she picked him, goodbye to bachelorhood. Love is blind and everyone can tell he gives in too much and he should put his foot down. Haven’t he learned from all the series that he has filmed?

  14. I wonder if she had regrets in marrying this HK uncle with all the baggage that came with it. IMHO, she definitely “married down.”

    1. Totally agree!!!

Successful independent women should choose divorce over regret.

    2. Everyone comes with baggage. It’s a marriage and it’s a lot of work. If she married for love than work on it. She’s a smart girl. He is a keeper because he’s not a cheater or gambling addict. 😀

    3. come on hawick is a fantastic guy. hawick’s career is still on the rise. he ages well and they don’t look 12 years apart. how is she marrying down?

    4. She not marrying down. The last news come out about how much celebrities make, Hawick name was on top of her. He make more than her in China.
Search the site, I am sure that article still around. Many people were shock that Hawick make more than Yang Mi, but is the true.

      1. Well, she was pregnant last/this year, wasn’t she? It really won’t mean much if she had cut down her workload due to her pregnancy, yet the difference is only 3 million RMB?
        Yang Mi (楊冪) 52 million
        Hawick Lau (劉愷威) 55 million

      2. Also, his so-called mid-life rise to stardom came only after he had successfully hooked up with her professionally and then personally. Prior to that he had been struggling in the Mainland for years taking on mostly supporting roles.

      3. @Terminator,
        Totally agree!!!

Yang Mi helped/connected her husband to the mainland market. I’m sure the Lau family knows this. Women get no respect. Think twice before marrying into any female-suppressive society.

  15. Sounds like the media is trying very hard to make a rubbish story out of nothing again.

    1. yeah, that could be it too haha cuz they need to report whatever to make money.
she does look it thou, she’s always seems a bit snotty to me when I hear her on her interviews or other functions. I guess it’s better to hear her talk compares to her singing thou hahaha LOL….she should be banned from singing period. HORRIFIC VOICE…

  16. She actually looks it and probably thinking she’s pretty and more popular too.
From the way she acts on interviews and the way she talks, no doubt she can be the one IN CONTROL of the relationship than the dude.

    1. They all are. The sooner the better. A happy wife a happy home. 😀

  17. Lau Dan always seem so happy when he talks about his son and his daughter-in-law.. so I honestly think the reports are not real. She look pretty down to earth to me.

  18. what’s the big deal? most of us can’t stand our inlaws anyway…

n never never stay under the same roof !

  19. People are commenting all these comments based on “mainlanders” status. Not because YM. Mostly b/c she married a hk guy and that’s why is stiring up these people. HK people are worse – they just all about the appearance and they look down on people alot. When it comes to money, they are the most stinginess people.

I visit my in laws but just b/c they are part of my family. I do not ever want to live with them and what’s the big deal? This is how new generations are now days. HK people still live with the parents even when they are in their 40’s because is all about saving the money and not having to pay rent.

    1. Agree. People are just finding a chance to cause backlash against mainlanders. I’ve heard stories of celebrities from Hong Kong (and everywhere else) who are just as bad as she’s claimed to be in the article, where are all the generalising comments in those articles?

  20. Good luck to the family, and I hope their marriage will last.

  21. lol how do they know? how does any1 know…its only her the husband, baby, and mom and dad living in the house…what people hide cameras and spy on them? its all made up…even if its true, nobody knows other than d family

  22. From interviews and award shows that I watched Yang Mi. She gave me the impression that she is better than anyone else. Good luck to the family and hopefully things will go well for them.

      1. That doesn’t show anything really. It can be just that Hawick’s mum bought the diapers of her own accord. I mean, why is Hawick himself not getting blamed for making his own mother play the nanny? How is it that it’s always the daughter-in-law’s fault? Is she solely responsible for bringing up the baby? Seriously, people…

  23. Why does hawick’s mom need to do all these chores on her own? Surely they can afford to hire a few maids?

    1. monies spent on wedding banquet, ring, apartments to save face, very little money left to hire maids, most probably lau dan’s wife is only given monthly allowance

      1. Haha, more likely that they’re not hiring a maid since there’s already one working for free = 2 cheap freeloaders taking advantage of their own parents. Sadly I’ve come across real life cases like these.

    2. That’s how moms are… some moms like to put in time and effort for the family and they don’t know how to enjoy the luxury life. My mom is like that, we bought her a brand new car but she rather take the bus, and she deliver food to our work place when we keep telling her not to.

If Hawick and YM are using the mom as a maid then why don’t they just let the mom buy the stuff on her own time. When we go to grocery store with my mom, we (siblings and my husband) just go to other stores and meet my mom somewhere later. Big deal!

  24. i’ve heard and seen alot of bad mother in laws out there too ! but no stories written about them?

  25. Well, seems like everyone is a major contributor to the family except the MIL. Does the media expect the MIL to gossip and play MJ all the time?

  26. i’m beginning to think that people are hating on her because she’s a mainlander, not because of what she’s doing to her in-laws(which at this point is totally based on rumors).

am i the only one that sees the irony when hkers are calling them rude, arrogant, and annoying (note, the “ching cong ling long” stereotypes are based on hker’s canto)?
hkers feel that mainlanders are “above” them, yet they call mainlanders “locusts”?

just face it. hkers dislike the mainlanders when they were dirty, rural, country-bumpkin poorer and closed from the world (of which hk was the only gateway to it, and thus, prospered from it), now they hate them because they’re richer and more open (something that hk historically have “campaigned” for). this is what happens when you let british aristocracy rule you.

and before you ask, i’m a hokkien guy from south east asia.

    1. And, to put Yang Mi in her place. You know, make sure she’s an obedient DIL (despite her success).

    2. @Pbot – Disagree.

I think HK was a lot better until Mainlanders started immigrating there in droves. They were a lot cleaner, genteel and courteous.

Many Mainlanders never got the education that HKers received on etiquette. Of course, the Mainlanders that usually immigrate there were poor to begin with. But that’s only for some mainland areas. Other cities like Shanghai, Guangzhou, Beijing, etc. have evolved to become like HK. I wouldn’t say HK thinks Mainlanders are superior to them – i don’t think they’ll ever admit to that, even if it becomes the case someday. They’re too prideful. But they don’t hate on Mainlanders because of it.

    3. I think HK hates mainlanders more for the fact that they hate them but need them financially than just because of manners, education, etc.

I hate to say this but there is some basis for the hatred or rather sick of them sort of behaviour. In HK I can hear the announcer repeatedly repeating the same statement in Mandarin; “The guest in the ferris wheel please sit down”.

Then in Taipei Taiwan I kept hearing tourist guides saying in Mandarin “Our mainlender friends please respect our rules and regulations and please step off the grass!!”

That sort. I get the frustration. It’s just that whatever they say no one is listening. Why? Arrogance or ignorance?

    4. Can’t stand when people (bikers/mainlanders/HKers/purple people/green people/whoever) show utter disregard for rules. No argument there.

But, it seems a bit unfair and irresponsible for the media to make up fake rubbish about a young mother (Yang Mi), who could easily fall into post-partum depression, simply because they think she belongs to such a nonchalant/callous group. If the media “must” make Yang Mi walk on eggshells, then she better not take any favors from her in-laws. Better to hire help than to let her in-laws help.

      1. And, why is Yang Mi getting all the blame? How about Hawick? Women get no respect.

  27. Hate to say this but this marriage will not last. It will go the way of Nicholas Tse and Cecilia Cheung. From the diva attitude of Yang Mi, I can understand the difficults of the in-laws. I am surprised that Yang-Mi’s parents did not intervene and try to lam the situation down with words to their daughter. Poor Hawick is caught in the middle but on second thought, he chose to marry this trophy wife thus he had to expect the worse and hope for the best. Just hope their child is not embroiled with this nasty situation.

  28. Highly doubt the Laus will let Yang Mi escape. The Laus know her worth.

  29. I was a tourist in HK and though this may not be representative of all mainlanders, but every time someone cut the line, publicly poo’ed, ate on the subway, talked loudly, that person was a mainlander. This made our trip a bit more chaotic and less enjoyable compared to our previous pre-97 trips. Pity!

    1. I agree with you. As a frequent visitor to HK, I’ve experienced this first hand myself many times.

  30. Questionable validity of the report. Who wants to live with their In-Laws in this days and age? I don’t even expect my husband to live with my parents or vice versa. As for HK vs Mainlanders. Well, many Asians are inconsiderate spoiled brats, and it is seen as justified as long as you have money. I’ve experienced Racism and terrible attitude in HK (even from the cops), and I’m sure I will experience in Mainland as well (based on my ABC friend’s feedback). The privileged kids are rude and stuck-up in both places. Even the upper middle class FOBs we have to deal with here in the US are rude and snooty (and that don’t just include HK/Mainlanders). If you must moan and complain, go teach your kids better manners so they don’t turn up that way.

    1. PS: I’m South Asian BTW. Based on US Census I fall under Upper Middle Class category with education and income.

    2. There are rude and inconsiderate folks from all walks of life and ethnicities. These folks just think about themselves and themselves only before others. Good manners and etiquette are quickly disappearing. Even able bodied “po” or illegal folks are rude and inconsiderate in the United States expecting that they deserve welfare, free medical care and other social services paid for by hard-working taxpayers. Many of these same folks are too lazy to work, too lazy to do well or stay in school or establish a good work ethic and learn decent morals to perpetuate to their offsprings.

    3. “Who wants to live with their In-Laws in this days and age? I don’t even expect my husband to live with my parents or vice versa.”

Heck, some people don’t even want to live with their “own” parents (who nag endlessly, demand too much, inconsiderate of their offsprings’s busy schedules, etc.)

  31. Ditch Yang Mi and kick her back to China. Harwick Lau can marry another gal~~
