Lawrence Ng’s Roles Throughout the Years

Lawrence Ng (吳啟華) is one of those rare actors that can grasp the attention of audience members no matter what role he takes on. A graduate of TVB’s acting class of 1982, Lawrence boasts a diversified acting resume and memorable villain performances.

Between the late 1990s to the early 2000s, Lawrence was most known for his portrayal of the caring and intelligent Dr. Paul Ching in Healing Hands <妙手仁心>. During those years, Lawrence maintained a very positive image and was easily recognized by Hong Kong citizens whom often called him Dr. Ching on the streets. The popular role won over viewers, whom had once scolded Lawrence’s hated villainous role in 1986’s The Feud of Two Brothers <流氓大亨>. Last year, he made his TVB comeback in The Hippocratic Crush 2 <On Call 36小時II> and portrayed a pathology specialist.

Lawrence explained that he does not particularly like portraying evil roles, and prefers playing the good guy instead. Lawrence revealed that his role in Never Dance Alone <女人俱樂部> as Carmen Lee’s (李若彤) love interest was one of his favorites. “I believe that an actor’s career changes a lot – you have to listen to the director’s instructions on what characters to play. The scriptwriters also dictate the storyline and it’s difficult to input your own opinion. But playing Alan in Never Dance Alone changed my views; I felt that comedic roles are very fun to play. It’s different than the tamed and clean-cut characters and there’s a lot more room for development. If there are more opportunities like this, I hope to give it a try.”

In Lawrence’s most recent drama, Battle of Tomorrow <再戰明天>, he takes on the challenge of portraying the strict correctional officer. Excited by the role, Lawrence began a training regime to get himself in to shape. He went jogging every morning and worked out at the gym to prepare for the action scenes.

Lawrence’s return to TVB dramas brought opportunities to perform in overseas Chinese communities. In September, Lawrence will be holding two performances with Fred Cheng (鄭俊弘) and Edwin Siu (蕭正楠) in Vancouver and Toronto, as well as attend fan-signing events.
