Veronica Shiu’s Grandfather is Vitasoy Founder

Despite the 150,000 votes Veronica Shiu (邵珮詩) received for the Miss Hong Kong 2014 pageant crown, controversies surrounding her win are still rampant. The media recently uncovered that Veronica’s grandfather, Shiu Wai Ming (邵蔚明),  is one of the founders behind the popular Vitasoy brand. The beverage giant has a long-term advertising partnership with TVB.

With Vitasoy’s $10.3 billion HKD market capitalization, Veronica’s family wealth is even more impressive than previous winner, Grace Chan (陳凱琳), whose father is a multi-millionare. TVB Deputy Director of External Affairs, Tsang Sing Ming (曾醒明), confirmed that Vitasoy has been a long-standing partner with TVB. But Veronica expressed that she did not receive special treatment because of her grandfather’s money.

“Everyone saw my performance that night, and I won because of my ability. My grandfather didn’t do anything to help me.” Veronica added, “The pageant staff and the contestants did not know who my grandfather is. I’m not sure about Vitasoy and TVB’s partnership, as I never asked my grandfather. I just know that he supported me spiritually and told me to do my best.”

Preferential Treatment

However, other factors point at TVB’s favoritism towards Veronica over the course of the pageant. Apparently, Veronica used her status to her benefit. When the contestants had to pick out dresses for the pageant finals, Veronica decided that she wanted #7 Katherine Ho’s (何艷娟) feather dress for herself, and personally requested to have her own dress switched with Katherine. In response to the allegations, Katherine admitted that there were some wardrobe changes involved. Katherine also defended Veronica in winning the Miss Photogenic award.

Since Veronica’s good friend, Gloria Tang (鄧佩儀), was one of the judges involved in selecting Miss Photogenic, many concluded that Veronica won because she automatically received Gloria’s vote. However, Katherine disclosed that Gloria and #3 Linna Huynh (黃碧蓮) were also good friends and concluded that Veronica did not win the award because of her friendship with Gloria.

Rigged Results from Past Years

Past results from the Miss Hong Kong pageant were also marred with controversy over the selection of its winners. In 2010, Toby Chan (陳庭欣) was rumored to have won the crown because she was dating the heir of Korean sponsor, Mask House.

Edelweiss Cheung (張舒雅) was speculated to have won the 2008 crown because her family was one of the jewelry sponsors of the pageant. After the competition, Edelweiss’ grandfather said, “Thanks to all the staff for helping my granddaughter win first place.” His statement was regarded as a slip that the results of the pageant were fixed.

Despite her beauty, Aimee Chan‘s (陳茵媺) victory in 2006 was not without controversy. Aimee’s father is a restaurateur in Toronto and the Chans have a close relationship with former TVB Deputy Chairperson Mona Fong‘s (方逸華) cousin, Wong Ka Hee (黃家禧).

  1. A lesson to be learned. Girls from ordinary background should not waste time participating in this pageant. She said the pageant staff did not know about her grandfather’s relationship with TVB but the big bosses at TVB did. Pageant staff have no power to decide the winner but big bosses have the authority to do so.

    1. The recent Ms HKs seem to be from rich backgrounds. Smells kinda fishy.

      1. I agree, they all had some sort of connections with the industry…but hey, could be all coincidence. Who would know lol. If it is true that they got in bcos of connections, well lucky them. Those who got in with no help, well I guess their sense of would be most satisfying and must feel priceless. However they made their way through the industry, that’s only the start, if they cant manage to stay in the industry with their own abilities and skills, then i dont see how they’d have a long career anyway.

Rebecca Zhu didnt come from a rich background though?

      2. there were some miss hks that didnt come from rich backgrounds.

And not all contestants with rich backgrounds won the pageant.

    2. kate tsui wasnt rich when she first started out, pretty ordinary. same with sonija kwok!

      1. I guess not as much in old days. I didn’t recall too many Miss HongKongs were from rich families.

      2. may be one those year,…no candidate is rich…i would say those from wealthy family do have advantage…but all depend on their outlook and perform on that night!

    3. And I disagree with your advice saying ordinbackground girls sholdt waste their time in participating for the pageant. Yes,ultimately if they participate they would want to win, but im sure they’d gain a lot of experience and some exposure whether or not they win. If their experiences leads to somewhere then hey, why not give it a try anyway?

  2. And it probably wasn’t easy on Gloria either since she was good friends with both Veronica AND Linna. Hard to choose which one.

And maybe this is tvb’s hidden plan to promote sofiee and have her act in series right away.

And so, erica tsui (who was in MCI) was the niece of Michelle Yim (a pretty prominent actress), yet she didn’t win..

    1. Uhhh…pretty sure Michelle Yim isn’t loaded in comparison to the founder of Vitasoy. Indeed, she’s a respected actress, but it’s all about money and connections.

      1. If it’s about the money and connections, please enlighten: carat’s win, Sire’s win, whitney’s win, grace wong’s win.

      2. @hannah: if its all about money, wealth and connections, then those girls who were wealthy such as chris lai’s gf should have won miss hk but she didnt despite being rich. in fact, she got eliminated real fast.

      3. Janisa: her family is rich but maybe they didn’t sponsored anything to tvb perhaps? Afterall, we live in a society where “I scratch your back if you scratch mine”

      4. great: it makes no sense.
Nicole Li comes from a wealthy background, for which her parents own a beauty corporation, with numerous subsidiaries, including 5 “Dr. Renew” skincare clinics, as well as 16 other beauty centers. The Li family’s assets are estimated to be valued over HK $100 million..

      5. @Catherine, all those you mentioned (except for Carat) have no connections. Thats why they werent the winners, just runner ups.

Carat, maybe she won cos her name sounds expensive enuf. Hahah.

      6. That’s the point. If it’s about money and connections, then Carat wouldn’t have won.

There were contestants who were rich but didn’t make it to the top. Hence, hannah’s theory of money and connections isn’t strongly supported.

  3. No wonder. Honestly, her performance that night wasn’t that amazing. In fact, it was not even memorable.

    1. are you saying sofiee’s performance was memorable or amazing? lool.

      1. i dont even remember any of the performances, tbh. none were exceptionally amazing

      2. Number 3 stood out for me bcos she seemed quite genuine and had a cute personality. The others, including Veronica werent spectacular or memorable imo o_O

  4. if u watched the pageant, a lot of girls were given tough questions and were constantly picked on by the hosts…the winners questions were so simple and short and the hosts didnt even give her a hard time

    1. Agree it’s rigged and people in hk reported tvb for rigged results

  5. haha i was going to try for miss hong kong next year but i think i’ll just focus on my university studies at this point…

    1. I’m 25 in a few months. I was going to enter when I was 22, but I didn’t bother with it. I do come from good family background, but that doesn’t matter anyway. My parents have no connection with TVB whatsoever. I think the whole pageant industry is rigged. No point trying.

      1. If I knew this about you and you entered, I’ll be willing to support you haha
Or any contestants throughout the years that aren’t as privileged xD

    2. But even if it’s about money and connections, why completely shootdown the opportunity? if ppl are only participating bcos of winning, then the chances of winning would be a slim anyway. You’re talking about 1 winner out of how many girls. If it’s not about money but about abilities and skills, would you really think the chances of winning would increase by a lot?? (not one bit trying to offend anyone here!!) I say participate if you want to, you wont want to live with regret later on and be like “what if I had …”. You;d never know the outcome anyway unless you try, if you try you might not get it but if you dont try you definitely wont. If you lose, wouldnt gaining the experience beth it too? Just my opinion. But of course it’s your decision in the end.

  6. Um.. Vitasoy is made with 4 other founders. And Vitasoy isn’t just owned by Shius grandfather. Veronica’s family doesn’t own the whole company’s wealth. They only own 1/3 of that 10.3 billion.

  7. well actually Veronica’s performance wasn’t that amazing on that night!! like i just still don’t get why would she get these three awards such as miss friendship award, miss photogenic award, and miss hong kong winner????? if she actually got the miss friendship award then she is not able to get as a miss hong kong winner!!!!…i almost got so surprised when they announced that she was the winner!!!!! 😉

    1. Miss friendship= voted by her pageant friends.

miss photogenic= the tvb artistes gave her that award

miss hk= some say rigged, some say luck, i say she deserves it. lol

  8. each year when i watch the miss hong kong finals…when one of the girls are chosen as a “miss friendship award” is only that award that person revived in the pageant!!!!!! this year is such a “holy crab”!!!!!

  9. EDELWEISS Cheung??? Another strange one for the long list of crazy English names.

  10. Big deal, TVB can not find a decent amount of Hong Kong girls in the pageant.

The voting system is rigid again.

  11. So the past few Miss HKs’ve been from super wealthy families, definitely far detached from your average HK battler working hard all day to make ends meet!
That’d certainly go a long way to explaining why even somewhat ugly Indians like Grace Chan, could win. Seriously though I think Veronica Shiu looks better than Grace.

      1. If I were forced to bet, I’d say GC might actually be adopted. I highly doubt their ancestry of being purely East Asian. Veronica looks much better & has a face that you can certainly say looks East Asian/Chinese. Much more relate-able to the average Chinese person, feature-wise. GC doesn’t look out of place in a Miss India content. Have you guys even seen the recent Miss India contestants?

      2. Lol, do you watch Miss India? They look so Indian! Grace looks 5% Indian.

And even so, that doesn’t mean she is adopted. Her mother looks a little mixed too.

I hope you are not discriminating against Indians because Indians do look beautiful.

      3. @Andrew,
By denying Grace Chan(dra) looks more Indian than Chinese, you’re not only showing ignorance about how some pure-blooded Indians can look but you’re also discriminating/stereotyping Indians. The only problem I’ve is Grace Chan(dra) denying the obvious re her looks & also how she sticks out like a sore thumb among the pool of ethnic East Asian/Chinese contestants during Miss HK 2013. If you go to Nepal (the border country between India & China), you’d be 50%-50% mixed ladies who resemble Grace Chan(dra) especially to her pre-orthodontic days with her naturally dark skin tone.

      4. LOL, that’s your subjective view.

Even if she looks Indian, you can’t really say she is Indian just because you think she looks Indian. There’s no concrete proof that her dad is Indian.

And even if she is, what’s the big deal lol?

      5. @Andrew
Only Grace Chan(dra) made her dubious heritage a big deal. Nobody else. The real big deal was about a relatively ugly girl winning Miss HK 2013.

    1. You need your eyes checked… Grace is one of the most stunning winners in years! Veronica is quite forgettable..

      1. Beauty is in the eye of beholder. Grace is attractive but not stunningly beautiful in my opinion.

      2. Veronica looks sort of like Helen Yung(the first runner up in the 1990 pageant when Anita won)to me. Helen was a hot favorite to win but lost to Anita in the end and got second place instead.

      3. I think Grace is beautiful compared to the others and honestly she looks chinese to me but just mixed.

      4. ..and I think you need to be more exposed to other races, Andrew. Grace looks more Indian with some very distant Asian ancestry than Chinese, whatsoever. She’s very far from stunning unless you’re going for that exotic half-starved (Indian) prisoner-of-war look from the Auschwitz concentration camp.

      5. Like HTS said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. FYI- Grace is considered by the international pageant fans as one of the most stunning winners HK has crowned.

She has a international appeal that attracts attention from around the world. If she was taller and had a better figure, I’m sure she’ll be considered one of the favorites to win the Miss World title in December.

FYI – Victoria Jane Jolly didn’t look Chinese (mixed by all means) BUT WAS CONSIDERED A MAJOR FAVORITE TO WIN MISS WORLD 2002. She was praised by “Global Beauties” (a international pageant site) to be the most stunning HK reps. sent recently.

Goes to show stunning doesn’t necessarily mean looking 100% Chinese right? The world is a big place and has many races Andy lol.

      6. And it really depends on how you view Miss HK. Some people like traditional Chinese beauty and may think Rowena Lam, Pauline Yeung, and Shirley Yeung are stunning.

To me, stunning means a beauty which I just gaze at once I see her photo. Grace is one of them.

FYI guys – Loletta Chu, Michelle Reis, and Sonija Kwok, all considered stunning Miss Hong Kongs ARE ALL MIXED. If that’s the case, even if Grace is mixed with Indian blood, why is she not considered stunning lol? She looks Chinese to me lol!

BTW – I thought Anita was the big favorite that year. How is Helen the big favorite!? She looked quite chubby on screen… And short too.

      7. @Andrew
Well, it’s also well-known that many Chinese people’ve a blatant predilection for foreign looks & typical Chinese/East Asian features’re devalued. You sound exactly like one of them. Fact is, Grace Chan(dra) looks Indian & probably has a lot of Indian blood in her – if not full-blooded. Those not selectively blind would easily notice that her pre-contest photos with that naturally dark skin, non-Chinese facial shape & features, make that very obvious.
That aside, Miss Chan(dra) shouldn’t have won Miss HK since she was hardly beautiful even by Indian or any standards. She looks half-starved, has no curves, has a huge head with disproportionally large facial features & narrow drooping shoulders. Grace Chandra hardly stood out among her more East Asian/Chinese appearing competition if it wasn’t because of her ‘exotic’ Indian looks & the controversy surrounding her vehement denial that she’s not pure Chinese.

      8. @andy

I guess i am one of those people you described above. I watch many international pageants and appreciate all types of beauty. Grace is definitely one rare beauty you find in HK.

As for her not deserving to win, the HK public and judges thought otherwise. Despite all the flaws you pointed out, she came in first for the public and judges’ voting. BTW – at least raymond Lam wasn’t blind that time.

Her performance was very good that year and her victory was welcomed by many. Let’s just admit – the majority of Hong Kongers can overlook her figure and weight and crown her MSHK because she’s truly stunning.

      9. @Andrew,
Now that Grace Chandra has had more images appearing after her Miss HK 2013 contest, everyone can see that she’s actually stunning.
Stunningly fugly that is, with only 1 expression – a head-tilted grin. Of course, you gotta take off your blinders in order to see that. With her limited facial expression, I doubt her acting career will ever take off without some more heavy-duty hype.

      10. Really don’t get your obvious bias. Miss HK 2008 was in your words, “skinny like a stick” & therefore, a questionable winner yet we’ve Grace Chandra, even skinnier than a stick that she’s almost 2-dimensional, yet, you find her stunning just because she has that non-Chinese looks, which is still below average, about her. I get it, you down-rate East Asian looks for non-Chinese looks. Grace Chandra could’ve come in with 3 eyes & buck teeth & folks like you’d probably still find them deserving to win Miss HK. Seriously, you’ve got to stop pretending to be objective, pal. I really do hope you’re not one of those self-hating East Asian sellouts.
Thank the Gods, Veronica Shiu won Miss HK 2014. Let us appreciate classic Chinese looks once again.

      11. Ahhaaha!!

Finally, some blogger that can legitimately challenge me. Good points you brought up pal.

Yes, you’re right, I may be a little bias towards East Asian looks. But don’t we all have bias lol!? Aren’t you biased over Grace’s “Indian” looks?

If you appreciate Far East Asian looks that much, why don’t you compliment Kayi Cheung or Hoyan Mok or the other Miss HK winners?

Or why are you not criticizing other non-Far East Asian looking winners crowned – like 1984’s Mina Godenzi? Why are you picking on Grace only? Hmm, seems like you’re biased too LMAO.

      12. As for the “skinny” like a stick comment, if you read my entire comment, I have out other reasons why I don’t think she deserved to win.

If you did read but forget, let me remind you pal.

I mentioned she was skinny like a stick AND on top of that, gave a poor performance. Her interview didn’t stand out. And FYI – she wasn’t the big favorite to win that year. It was a surprising result. The main favorites for the title – Samantha Ko and Heidi Leung were left unplaced. For this, I don’t expect you to remember because you’re not a pageant fan like me. But, you could’ve done some research like looking at the Oriental Daily archives to read how the HK public or the media thought about her win.

In comparison to Grace, she may be skinny, BUT THE PUBLIC VOTED FOR HER and the judges VOTED FOR HER. That’s a undisputed fact. She have a good performance and the majority of Hong Kongers thought so too.

Hence, that’s why I found Edelweiss’s win to be surprising and not as welcomed. I saw the pageant live pal. She is 5’10” but weighs ONLY 112 pounds. Her BMI is lower than Grace’s LMAO!!!

If you think Grace is undeserving, I can’t get how you think Edelweiss deserved it LMAO.

I’m biased but for a reason. She can win but where’s the rationale? No media support for her that year, unwelcomed victory in the audience, SKINNIER FIGURE than Grace, and a very dull, slack-off personality. She almost got dethroned and didn’t compete in MCI.

And you dare to bring her up and compare her with Grace? Wow dude, what a terrible comparison.

      13. @Andrew,
Grace Chandra’s simply all head with exaggeratedly large but ugly, non-East Asian facial features. If you dig that kind of sh-te, great, but don’t try to upsell her obvious mediocrity. Her looks & body shape’re plain unattractive, even by non-Chinese/non-East Asian standards.

      14. Andy:

You are such a racist. I wonder if you live in the states or Canada, a place where all types of ethnics and races live together.

Reading from your comments, you either hate Indians or really hate Grace for some reason.

You constantly bash her to death and that’s quite unfortunately.

I mean you can disagree with my comment about her being beautiful and stunning.

But you failed to provide examples of East Asian winners that you believe are beautiful.

You keep on mocking her body, but FYI, Edelweiss and other winners were also skinny and flat chested.

Even Tracy Ip had a poor figure during the year she won.

You can certainly believe Grace is ugly and “plain looking” but calling her names and disrespectful others doesn’t make you any better, right?

      15. And may I say Andy, what you just said is your personal opinion only LOL?

Seems like the rest of the Jaynestars community thinks she’s beautiful, even if not stunning.

  12. Her grandfather no longer holds any shares. I doubt it is of any consequence. She performed well that night and is not bad looking. I think her win is well deserved

    1. If her grandfather no longer holds any shares, it means two things.

      1. her win has nothing to do with vitasoy.
      2. she doesn’t have the 10.3 billion as her wealth.

    2. If her grandpa retired she still can win ppl in vita soy will help her probaly helping her due to her grandpa

  13. All I know is there hasn’t really been strong Hong Kong contenders for a long while. Even though Grace Chan represented HK, she’s lived her life in Vancouver. Our girls give everyone a run for their money. This year’s Miss Chinese International was basically a Vancouverite one, two!

    1. Um.. the result from last year’s mcvp was a shock. no one really expected her to win since most people would expect the judges to pick someone who can speak canto.

hot favourite was jessica dai and jennifer lee. it wasn’t cindy zhong.

      1. Well, that’s certainly my point, even someone who’s subpar here captures runner up at MCI! I was supporting Ferba the whole way, it was a shock like you said.

      2. But it wasn’t rigged. by the time cindy zhong won the other awards, backstage ppl were its either between ferba or cindy.

      3. How #3 didn’t make the top 3 was completely out of my mind….. Cindy was good but not very beautiful so I have no idea how she won and managed to win 2nd at MCI. Again, shows how TVB favors Vancouver every year.

If you guys remember, Eric Tsang was helping Cindy and not giving her too tough a time last year. He did the same thing with Veronica this year too. Poor Soffie, what a hard time she had!

      4. no one expected cindy to win at mci. maybe top 5, but not top 3.

her results at mcvp and mcip was a shock.

      5. @Elle, i don’t know where you’re getting your information from but let me say that Jennifer was definitely not a top choice backstage.

I cant say that pageants aren’t rigged but its so much more than just wealth or appearance. A pageant takes months to prepare for and during that time personalities of the contestants are critical towards judge’s choices as well. Like they say, you cant judge a book by its cover.

      6. I don’t follow MCV closely but do look at the profile photos once they’re out. Immediately, I thought #3 and #8 are clear favorites. And if you speak Cantonese, it’s a plus because you will be less-picked on by Eric Tsang at MCI.

I really overlooked Cindy during the webcast and photos. Until she bragged a number of awards and was left standing in the end, I said “ok, we will have a Miss Friendship win the title. That’s rare.”

Even so, like many of you pointed out here, I don’t think many expected Cindy to make top 3 at MCI. She’s not bad but facially, she is not one of the best Vancouver has to offer.

Even Gloria Tang’s win was a WTF! Her performance was good that night but her interview session was such a joke. Eric was helping and letting her go so easily! He obviously was favoring her and wanted to let her pass easily (just like how he treats MSHK).

I would say lack of competition and training from other cities contribute to Vancouver winning almost every year. Other cities have trouble finding sponsors and do not have well-established pageants as opposed to Fairchild. Look at how Malaysia, HK, and Vancouver do every year……

      7. One sacrifices a lot for the MCV pageant. it looks pretty, the process is hardcore. many of the shoes the contestants wore on that night gave many contestants problems.

      8. Re C-lo:

But shouldn’t every pageant be designed like that? Many girls go through tough training every year to compete for their local, state, and sometimes national or international crown(s).

In Miss America for example, they go through so many training sessions – fitness, catwalk/posing, talent, interview, etc. They also have a social platform to work with.

MCV also has talent competition but compared to Miss America, it’s not as tough.

      9. Katie, do you have split personality issues? I recommend you to see the doctor because you’re acting very rude and idiotically.

And you disguising as 2 other bloggers now. Please get a life idiot.

FYI – if you have not worked or competed in MCV, please close your mouth.

      10. FYI – My Vancouver friends have auditioned for MCV and made it.

I know how the process works, don’t start the “it’s very tough” case with me.

I never said it wasn’t tough. I just said it ain’t as tough as other pageants.

If you think MCV is the toughest, you need to study Miss Universe or Miss World. The competition there is 10 times more competitive LMAO.

      11. Lmao,

First of all, I told him/her to close your mouth. I didn’t use the words “shut up” to purposely avoid any rudeness.

And how do you know I haven’t worked backstage lol?

You and others sound really experienced in pageants. If you’re claiming I am inexperienced, how much experience do you have? How much pageant trivia do you know?

Seems like your describing yourself in your comment. Straight up nonsense.

      12. And quite frankly, don’t talk pageants with me if you don’t support your comments with some decent statistics or trivia please. That’s what you call nonsense or BS.

      13. As for shairka,

Please read the rude comments Katie, Daniel, and m (?) wrote about me.

I welcome them to reply my comments but not verbally abusing me by calling me a idiot. I don’t think that’s polite or proper for a online forum. They were the ones acting like child and going around by using multiple usernames – I mean one person.

  14. I never liked her I was very disappointed in the results i thought the results are always fair so I wanted to go in micp but this mean she will win micp I think Aimee and grace deserve to win the adward but trust me
    1) be another carat cheung
    2) become famous because every time u on your tv she is the only 1 u can watchq

  15. it was said that she was also the family of the founder of tvb Run Run Shiu, lol.

    1. This is getting more interesting. They COULD be related for all you know. Shaw/Shiu?

    2. Whatever she has, she still needs to have what it takes. She can’t take her grandpa everywhere she goes. Of course being rich helps. 😀 🙁 LOL!

  16. It’s very sad that some of the girl’s win because of their family’s wealth and not because of their own capability.

  17. Look, if her grandpa helped why then should she even enter the pageant? She can just go into TVB and get any role without having to parade herself in skimpy swimsuits and subject herself to silly Q&A sessions and scrutiny of every inch of her body and looks to join the entertainment world.

    1. Funn Lim, maybe because she wants the title of Miss Hong kong to boast to other. And who wouldn’t like the be miss hk and acknowledged as being very beautiful. Also i think the grandfather is from her mother’s side, so i guess she not really rich, but full of connections…

      1. I think her grandfather is from her father’s side since they have the same surname. Unless her mom has the same surname that her dad does.

    2. I believe it’s her grandpa, not grandfather.

Anyhow, Funn, I disagree with your points. Despite having the connections, she can’t simply “step-in” to TVB and land a major role immediately. She needs to get some sort of experience, like any job right now.

Her experience is “miss Hong Kong.” Btw, she also entered miss Chinese Vancouver so it seems like she has desire for glory and fame.

      1. Hmm, grandfather is your mom’s dad and grandpa is your dad’s dad. Of course there’s a difference. It’s not like uncle or aunt.

      2. What part of the world are you in? Grandfather and grandpa are the same, just like mom and mother, dad and father.

      3. LOL, I did a quick search on Google and seems like the term “grandpa” means one’s grandfather while grandfather means dad or mom’s father.

In anyhow, in elementary school, I was taught that way. Not sure it really means the same meaning. Maybe they changed the definition recently LOL?

But just to clarify and make my comment, her father’s grandpa is the one she is referring to. Or father grandfather if that makes you guys happier.

  18. Veronica Shiu is not that pretty, so I’m guessing she won because of her charm and personality?

    1. the closeup shots of sofiee isnt that pretty either. shes pretty much avg looking. only in some angles, shes pretty.

      1. We’ll I still think she has a bigger eye than Veronica without makeup and tallrt nose smaller mouth Veronica smile is not pretty

    2. I believe being A winner of any pageant shield require and be much more than just looks.

  19. I love drinking Vitasoy, but i feel said for the people who have an ordinary background.
    Typical, but disappointed. :/

    1. it’s not rigged. if tvb only wanted to promote those who had a wealthy background, how did rebecca zhu win? better question yet, why didn’t some other wealthy contestants win? obv. there are other factors.

  20. Get over it already people. Rich people have the power to do anything and they get what they want. Is anything in life that is even fair anymore???? How I wish I was rich!

  21. If this is how it goes, might as well don’t have the pageant competition. Just crown whoever it is TVB wanted to crown. Either way, the results are the same. I feel it is more honest to crown right away than holding the competition and wasting time. Either way, only the winners truly knows if they truly deserves it. If not, holding the title is just by name. People will never acknowledge them.

  22. My thoughts:

Tvb did favor Veronica. The MCs constantly supporting her boasted her support to gather public votes. The stealing the dress incident above and purposely adding a ice-skating segment to the pageant to let her showcase her talent seems to be too much of a coincidence!!

And let’s face it, many of the girls were picked on by the MCs but she was let go easily. She also received rather softball questions in comparison to what the other questions Soffie and Jan received. I mean come on, explaining your photo ID in comparison to speaking a language and translating it through body language!?!? Did tvb consider the difficulty of the questions LOL!?

And, by simply eliminating the favorites, cutting the top 10 to 3 instead of 5 was a smart move by TVB. This totally left the favorites out of contention. Easy victory (landslide one) in the end for Veronica. I mean the other 2 girls received little support from the MCs, of course the votes will away to one girl in the end.

The whole result is a joke.

    1. I totally agree with everything you said, but in the end I think what matters is who will be more successful in TVB or I guess who has the most support from the public. For example, when in 2012 when Carat won, I was shocked but it seems TVB isn’t really giving her much attention now despite the fact that she was the winner and I guess she isn’t as likable as Tracy and Jacqueline. Anyways, I was kinda annoyed at how the MC’s were obviously playing favoritism towards Veronica because like you said Veronica really had the easiest question out of the bunch with just laughing and saying that she didn’t have enough sleep…man I felt bad for Sofiee since it seems like she one of the hardest questions. sigh.

      1. LMAO, #12 was also a flight attendant but wasn’t asked that question.

And even if they are, I don’t except them to know Korean unless they specifically told TVB beforehand that they speak Korean.

    2. tvb didnt favour veronica.
sofiee lost because she tried to lick tvbs shoes. her answers didnt make any sense. her performance was the worse.

And if tvb favoured vancouver, why didnt loretta chow win the mhk the year she entered?

      1. Lol, please read my other posts of how many years Vancouver has won at MSHK and MCI and made the semifinals of both pageants. I’m tired of replying the same posts over and over.

FYI – the winner that year, Kayi Cheung comes from Vancouver and competed in the 2005 Miss Chinese Vancouver pageant. Many people regard her as the least facially beautiful Miss Hong Kong ever crowned.

  23. And even if his grandpa didn’t buy her the crown, I would most likely say she received special treatment or favoring from TVB. This happens all the time if you are rich fellows……. Poor actors and actresses who work day and night but get left back to make way for people who come from rich backgrounds……..

  24. Other comments for the other beauty queens’ alleged rigged wins:

2008 – a very WTF win that year. I was actually in HK that year and attended the pageant. She was tall but was skinny like a stick!! I used to think and predict tall girls will win MSHK but after Koni and Loretta lost in 2006 and 2007, I cast my vote to Heidi Leung (a Vancouverite btw lol!). She was the big favorite that year. Her performance was so good that year. She actually had the highest interview score – 79 that year (you guys can look back) and the audience was shouting #7, #7 before the announcement. My jaw literally DROPPED when #3 was announced. Not many people were rooting for #3 that night. Her performance didn’t quite standout… Her interview was average btw. No idea how she won in the end.

Afterwards, I knew. Read this article above if you don’t.

  25. 2006-

Aimee wasn’t a big favorite to win that year initially. She became a favorite during the finals weeks of the pageant. She actually had negative news about receiving breast implants.

2006’s batch was quite mediocre.. No one really looked beautiful or gave a very standout performance. Aimee was no exception. But she won in the end because she didn’t really have strong competition. Janet was a surprise though..

  26. 2010 –

Simply a weird year. Not much pretty faces.. Toby was considered a favorite (not big though) to win. Her performance was okay that year. Beauty wise she is not the best though… Actually, the 2010 girls was quite mediocre and none really had the Miss HK look IMO.

  27. Although Veronica wasn’t my choice for crown, I believe that some of the comments about her are quite harsh. She had an average performance that evening, but to be fair, two weeks later, everyone’s performance was forgettable IMO. Her grandfather may or may not have an influence in her win, but she appears to be sincere enough that I didn’t mind her win. Like the 150,000+ who voted her, I would rather her win than Erin or Katherine. Also, the Miss Friendship and Miss Photogenic award were both voted by the contestants and TVB female artists so there must be something in her that appeals to people.

Agreed that she isn’t my choice for Miss Photogenic, but neither is Linna. I feel like Veronica is someone has a sincere smile (probably why she appeals to females) and I would probably want to make friends with her. Linna is more cute and sweet. Based on past judges’ results, my initial vote for photogenic went to Erin, who resembled Fala a lot. My personal favorite later was Sofiee.

What I found shocking was that this year’s motto made it seem like audience’s vote was very important and it was up to us to decide, but at the end, the judges got to pick who would get into top 3. THEN, it was up to us to choose, which doesn’t leave us much choice if our favorites didn’t get in. TVB was misleading in this case and at the end, I felt like it was false advertising for allowing us to crown the winner.

Although I wish Sofiee placed, I can’t disagree with the results since she didn’t perform as well as I have wished. Sofiee did get a tough question and it was one of those questions where the contestants would either perform really well and make the audience laugh or not know what to do at all. I suppose it was easier if TVB just gave her a normal question instead of one where she was required to perform sign language since not everyone is well-versed in that.

    1. Im a female she isn’t pretty in my view ms. Friendship could be rigged so is photogenic or is it I c more femal that is call pretty so I have a higher expectation. She has small eyes her nose isn’t tall her mouth doesn’t match her teeth I hope she never get famous

      1. Don’t forget that when all the contestants who didn’t get in top 3 gave hugs to their favorite contestants, Veronica got the most vote. I don’t believe that is rigged as it’s impossible to have rehearsed beforehand since they wouldn’t know who got into top 3. The truth is, if TVB wants to give the crown to a particular contestants, she doesn’t need to win either Miss Photogenic or Friendship. Edelweiss is a good example. In her year, all the other contestants who got into top five won a side award except for her.

      2. Valid points you made but this year, it seemed like Veronica was portrayed to have given a near-perfect performance.

From her semifinal interview and Miss Friendship win onwards, the MCs kept on mentioning how daring she was to call Nat Chan “crazy.” It was like they complimented her anytime they could. Or put it this way, she was the most complimented and praised throughout the telecast.

Even Nat Chan said during their top 3 interview – “Should be 398-2,” sort of implying she have a near-perfect interview and that she is the evident winner. And the MCs kept on mentioning “she is the clear favorite,” “the result is obvious,” sort of lines. They really had a major favoring towards her. This will sway the public’s opinion.

As for Miss Friendship, TVB really counts the votes so who knows? I did read that there was actually a tie and in the end, they devoted and Veronica won.

I do hope it’s not TVB trying to give her the award and then rigging the win so that she “makes history” and creates headlines for being the first Miss Friendship to win.

BTW – TVB, MCs, and the HK media have bad memory. Irene Lo, the holder of the Miss Hong Kong 1981 crown WAS MISS FRIENDSHIP. They must have forgotten her LMAO!!!

    2. “Her grandfather may or may not have an influence in her win, but she appears to be sincere enough that I didn’t mind her win. Like the 150,000+ who voted her, I would rather her win than Erin or Katherine. Also, the Miss Friendship and Miss Photogenic award were both voted by the contestants and TVB female artists so there must be something in her that appeals to people.”

      Agreed!

“What I found shocking was that this year’s motto made it seem like audience’s vote was very important and it was up to us to decide, but at the end, the judges got to pick who would get into top 3. THEN, it was up to us to choose, which doesn’t leave us much choice if our favorites didn’t get in. TVB was misleading in this case and at the end, I felt like it was false advertising for allowing us to crown the winner.”

It’s nothing new. The audience’s vote is very important but at the end of the day the one pays the bill gets to pick. 😀 🙁 LOL!

    3. Very good points you made! Neutrally states and reflects what the general HK public thinks.

I don’t think the HK media is liking Veronica as of yet.

And yes, Soffie didn’t shine in that segment but the difficulty of the question was quite high as opposed to other girls. Too bad she received such a tough question. Seems like TVB gave it to her purposely so she would lose.

As for the Miss Friendship and Photogenic awards, it can be rigged too! I understand why the female artistes are dazzled by Veronica’s smile but facially, I’ll pick Linna. Those female judges also chose Jennifer Shum in 2012 (I consider that a WTF win too lol).

BUT, I heard there was a tie in Miss Friendship. And Veronica won the tiebreaker in the end. Hmm…… Fishy indeed

      1. I was also shocked when Jennifer Shum won Miss Photogenic. She was one of the last contestants I would consider for that award, but yet the female judges loved her, according to what I heard. She quickly became the secretary for the executive board for Wai Yin. Perhaps because of Jennifer, I didn’t find Veronica’s win so surprising this year, which is also voted by a group of female celebrities. Veronica, is at least, the younger looking one of the two.

      2. Re above:

Female judges look for bright and radiant smiles. That was how Jennifer won despite the lack of facial beauty. I would’ve given the award to Roxanne or maybe Jacqueline Wong even though I think she is more cute than beautiful.

  28. This is not surprising. Almost every competition in HK or Asian countries is rigged in some ways, including the supposedly ‘fair and clean’ HKFA and Taipei Golden Horse.

  29. Does the math make sense? Vitasoy was started in 1940…so she has a grandfather born in the 1910’s???? 80+ years difference? Maybe great or great great grandfather

      1. Right, but this article states her grandfather IS one of the founding members

    1. I believe it’s her great grandpa (her dad’s grandpa). The article got that wrong.

  30. TVB’s HK pageant is like the HK government election. You think you got a choice, but you don’t.

      1. >many people said that too
..that doesn’t automatically make it true. Otherwise, the world should be on flat-plane & not a sphere since ‘many people’ believed & said so too. lol

      2. LMAO Andy, when did I say it’s true? I just said to Anon many Hong Kongers share the same opinion you have. And I also think so too.

Seems like you are really supporting Veronica and her victory.

  31. TVB make it sound like the public get a choice but we really don’t.
I didn’t like any of the top 3 and I’m sure a lot of people in HK didn’t like the top 3 – but unfortunately we have to choose a winner from those 3!!!!
The reason why Veronica got 150,000 votes (and she keeps repeating that she got 150,000 votes) is because she was the best of the worst!!!
A lot of people did not like Erin or Katherine so who can you choose?? Veronica!
It really is very bad and very rigged! It would actually be people’s choice if we actually got to choose the top 3!

    1. @Andy

Take a look at what Winnie wrote. Another user that shares the same opinion as I and Anon does.

There really wasn’t a lot of choices viewers could’ve made. The process seemed very democratic but it was semi-democratic in the end, just like how the HK Chief Executive is chosen lol.

    2. Agree with all your points Winnie! Especially your comment: “Veronica was the best of the worst.” Very good statement!

  32. While I do think Veronica looks pretty, I don’t think she is beautiful.

Her nose is a bit distracting, her mouth is too big, and her legs are a little big. And her teeth are not matching her mouth (?)

One thing good though is her figure. Her legs are a little big but her breast size is quite large. If she was a little taller, it will be even better.

But then again, even if Veronica had a perfect figure, she will most likely not do well at Miss World or Miss International. The same goes for Erin and Katherine. The girls there are simply too beautiful and competitive.

    1. Just go and check out the contestants for the Miss Universe and compare them to what was presented by TVB.

The 2014 Miss Hong Kong pageant was like picking average fruit from the discounted counter at your local Asian market.

      1. I guess it’s because TVB has a small pool and field for them to pick from. They used to have some rare beauties and gems but not much to choose from recently.

As for other countries, like USA, China, and Venezuela, they are more successful in pageants because they have a larger selection to choose from. Their training is much more intense, there are pageant schools in Venezuela. As for HK, TVB is not willing to train their girls at all.

Grace making it to Miss International 2007 semifinals was mainly contributed to her pageant experience and her interview skills. Tvb gives their girls ugly gowns.. So even if they have decent faces, the gowns ruin their chances.

I mean feathers on gowns lol!?

  33. I have a feeling that TVB likes to pick out girls that are a bit younger and has a face that is long lasting and can portray many different roles and characters in TVB drama. I think there is this specific look for Miss Hong Kong that they always look for and it is never the pretty one (other than Grace) because that was the ONLY fair year in my opinion. With males as photogenic judges which is “more” fair because they only want to work with a pretty/hot girl and that it was 50/50 vote. If it was a choice made by judges alone, I don’t think Grace would have won and a “heavier” body contestant like Vicky would have won.

As much as I think Sofiee is super pretty and cute and photogenic… She reminds me of Roxanne Tong from 2 years ago.. Great as a model, but once she stood in the entire group of girls she lost the sparkle and didn’t stand out.

I also can’t see Sofiee as a girl that can be casted into different roles other than the cute girl from next door, i guess she is lacking some character on screen? Perhaps that’s why they gave her such a tough question because she got the looks going on for her ,but want to see her react more and willing to talk and express herself.

Everyone praised #12 Janet as well for her looks, but again she has a face that is not very personable…. not very real … something unnatural about her and the way she talks is really weird with her mouth half close. Again you can’t really see her real personality at all. Plain and boring not to mention her super weird body that is not proportional.

Jan – she was just boring and looks like she’s an auntie on camera with her red hair. She kind of looked like the evil twin of Grace. If I was Jan , I would refrain from talking about being a look alike because she was the uglier version of Grace. Again, she did not display any kind of personality on camera. Just plain, boring and rehearsed speeches.

Linna was a cutie, sweet ..all sort of synonymy that goes with nice and cute.. BUT SHE DOESN’T speak or read Cantonese!!! TVB cannot afford time to train her in that department. She can’t even do Pearl TV. It’s a huge disappointment, but got to be realistic here.

Yammi – Is it because she’s 26 years old and that’s why she didn’t win? Because she had the Miss HK classic looks. Or again she lacked the personality when she is speaking…. just not as personable as you hope she would be. Otherwise she would have had a really good chance.

I am not sure how Erin and Katherine won here though…They didn’t particularly had a like-able character. Actually they are quiet annoying. After watching their VIP interview on TV, they were the ones with the MOST things to say about themselves. Created conversations, showed their true character despite it being good or not. You can tell Erin and Katherine are both very eager to display themselves. Where the rest are just more timid.

Other than the fact that they have advantage in their age and education. I really don’t see anything special about them in appearance. However, they were the most animated when they spoke in front of camera. Not to mention I think it’s extremely annoying of Erin who tried very hard to copy Sisley’s way in the pageant being the “CONFIDENCE KING”.

I also don’t see STAR quality in these two unlike Grace and Sisley. It’s really hard to imagine Erin and Katherine taking a lead in a drama because they have no strong presence! Very disappointing.

Now back to Veronica, she wasn’t the best looking or photogenic. But she was friendly or seems like it. Out of the 10 girls, I would probably want to be her friend and talk to her more than any of the other girls. For some reason, this batch of girls doesn’t seem to friendly and seems like they have a groupie ( sofiee, janet, erin and sabrina) and Veronica seemed like the odd one out, wasn’t very pretty and WON in the end.

I did think her performance was pretty good, and she did get really easy questions that she gave mediocre answers to. The skating part was what surprised me because she was the ONLY one that seemed like she had experience in and gave her the upper hand.

I can see her like Tracy Chu who also has a very big smile and a very traditional oriental face which definitely makes them easier to relate to. I am not sure if it’s because they have a very typical Hong Kong face that made them win the crown.

Overall, I am very happy about Veronica’s win because she was the best pick out of the 3 that was given. It is clear as to why she won 150,000+ votes.

I actually would have loved to see Yammi win because she was very classic , has the looks of the 80s and early 90s Miss Hong Kong. But does anyone think the age affects their chances of winning? Would you think it is too old for a 26 or 27 year old to participate and win the crown
    ?

    1. I know that TVB extended the age requirement in 2010 from 25 being the oldest to 27. I want to know this too whether the 26 or 27 year old stands a chance winning even if they are drop dead gorgeous. Does anyone think they are too old to be prancing around in bikinis?

    2. I picked Yammi during the promo but thought she was a little timid in the semifinals hence I ranked her 12th in the end.

But, she danced very well in the finals and had elegance. Agree with the classic looks statement. I actually would’ve welcomed her to the top 3.

Even though Erin and Katherine weren’t my personal picks to win, I am okay with their wins. The result was a little surprising but not as WTF as 2010’s or 2008’s. Alt. I admit I grew to like Skye Chan…

      1. if tvb favoured vancouver, pls convince me why didnt erica or susan win in mci?

      2. ??? Are you asking me about a comment I made earlier? Because I’m confused why would you reply to me here to ask about TVB favoring Vancouver lol(??)

I feel quite tired to re-write what I said 5 times already. You may read my previous comments in the Miss HK threads for my full explanations.

But short and sweet, many MSHK girls have been chosen every year from Vancouver. Many of the past winners have Vancouver backgrounds. As many as SIX Vancouver representatives have won MCI, more than any other city in the pageant (YES, FOR THE HATERS WHO SAY TVB FAVORS HONG KONG, HK has only 3 winners!).

With so much winners and girls making the top 3 (including last year’s Cindy Zhong), I would say TVB favors Vancouver a lot. Definitely more favoring for them than other US or European cities.

      3. Wilma,

Another blogger also brought up that example earlier in the discussion. Please do some research before commenting lol.

You should’ve brought up 2008 for example, when that Vancouver rep. didn’t place.

Or you could’ve brought up other years where Vancouver didn’t place, like 1994-1999 to argue my point.

      4. All in all, I say the reps. for those years didn’t place because the competition was too tough in those years.

As much as TVB favors them, they can’t really rig a win that evidently.

2012’s competition was very tough FYI. 28 girls and there were stunners like Linna (KL) or Jasmine (NY). Even Rebecca Zhu was decent looking. Vancouver in comparison lacked some spark. I didn’t see them both placing but due to the excessive hype from the HK media, I predicted Erica will make top 2. Indeed she was left clapping in the end.

      5. are you saying this year, it wasnt tough or during grace’s year, it wasnt tough?

you are a bystander. you do not know how hard it is to get into these rounds.

      6. As much as TVB favors Canadian girls, particularly Vancouverites, there are some winners I got and some winners I didn’t.

For example, in MCI, 2002, 2005, 2010, and 2013 were WTF wins. Leanne winning over Fala LOL? And Gloria’s talent!? Eliza did look sweet I admit but she was let-go easy by the MCs that year. Just like Gloria in 2013 and Cindy this year.

In MSHK, never will get 2007 Kayi’s win. Total WTF in MSHK history. And never really got Virginia Yung too. Carat was quite a pageant patty and how did Jacqueline make the top 3 over Roxanne!? 2012 was also a WTF year. This year was also a little joke.

As for the other wins, like 1998-2000 and 2013’s Miss HK wins and 2001, 2004 (even though I was surprised at Linda’s win initially) were more justified and in some cases, well deserved.

Overall though, lots of WTH wins and head scratcher years for the Vancouver wins.

      7. @Julianne

I have watched pageants for so long. I’m quite familiar with how the systems work FYI. I am also a pageant critic and I enjoy analyzing pageant results.

Last year was not tough. It was quite evident Grace will win. I recall Jayne and some other bloggers favoring Virginia at first but later changing their picks after seeing how stunning Grace is. And, she kept on winning awards! That’s a indication on how favored she was to win the title.

For this year, it’s definitely more tough.
Not much stunners or girls that pop out to you immediately. Therefore, it’s much more competitive and results are more unpredictable (like most people said this year!).

It’s not that hard telling which year is competitive or not LOL. You need to follow MSHK more.

      8. at least roxanne is in a sitcom. maybe it was a plan to promote roxanne first since tracy/jacqueline would be occupied with mhk duties. idiot.

seems like you are extremely biased and bashing vancouver like its vancouvers fault.

      9. May I ask are you from Vancouver? Or do you know any Vancouverites or the winners? Quite rude of you to speak like that LOL. Where did you leave your manners?

FYI – I’m only pointing out my observations and what I think to the Jayne community.

You may say I’m bashing Vancouver but there’s no denying Vancouver has placed more in the top 3 of MSHK and has won the most crowns at MCI than any other foreign city. It’s a fact they have won in such and such years or their girls have successfully entered the semifinals of MSHK in such and such years.

TVB does favor Vancouverites than other girls from other cities.

Look up Wikipedia if you need to.

      10. And M, FYI – the winners “rarely” have duties now. Yes, they attend some charity events and functions but, let me tell you something, Grace and Sisley and even Moon was given the thumbs up to act or host WAY BEFORE THEIR REIGNS ENDED.

Seems like what you said is not true now ROFL.

      11. you are extremely rude too. MR IDIOT.

it doesnt matter if these ppl are from vancouver or not. you are bashing vancouver and making it seem like its their fault. ever heard of coincidence?

      12. Haha, doesn’t surprise me that you disguise as another blogger and start barking like a dog.

Please respond with meaningful comments. Or try to counter my arguments with statistics rather than calling people names. It only makes you look ugly.

For the coincidence comment, that’s the best thing you can come up with lol? Why doesn’t Chicago have this coincidence? Or New York? Or London? Plenty of Chinese and Hong Kong descendants there.

    3. From what I know, only Winnie Yeung, Kate, and Aimee have won at age 25. No winners have won at 26 years or older.

Tvb usually crowns winners at 23 years old.

I would say age plays a factor in whether they win or not. Judges don’t like crowning too young or too old winners. Rarely do 17 year olds place, no winner has won at 17 for example.

In the old days, girls still won at age 18 – Loletta Chu, Michelle Reis, etc. but that’s mainly because they’re very beautiful.

      1. Then what is the purpose of expanding the age limit at all? Does anyone think there is a problem with a 27 year old entering? I mean does anyone look at her and think she is way over aged?

      2. I think it’s a good thing they did so! Alt. rarely do 26 or older girls get recruited, it does attracts girls that aged out at 25 to renter.

I believe TVB implemented that rule in 2010 to allow some girls that were over 25 to compete. One of them was #4 (?) and I don’t think she was very pretty nor was she a favorite to win that year. She was left unplaced.

Expanding the age limit will also attract beautiful looking girls over 25 to compete. Unfortunately, that has not been effective as not only beautiful girls not applied to MSHK, I don’t think girls over 25 years old were recruited ever since 2010!

      3. Looking at the age distribution chart, a few 17 year olds managed to win 1st and 2nd RUs, but it has been a long time since then.

The ideal age of competing is 20-23. Even 19 year olds are considered young now since they haven’t graduated from college yet. Back in the days, younger girls were more appreciated and favored.

  34. For all the people that said Grace will be competing in Miss World, like I said, nothing is confirmed until December arrives.

Just right now, in a tvb entertainment news interview, Erin said she will compete in Miss World. That’s what I said before…..

    1. Hopefully, she’ll proudly represent her motherland. It’s about time India had an ambitious contestant for Miss World.

      1. Can you read English Andy lol? I said it looks like Erin will be competing in World, contrary to what some other bloggers said before (Gina I think and some other girls).

And even if Grace competed, why you discriminate and criticize her for looking Indian? Are you racist?

  35. my ideals would be
    #3, #15, #13.

I really liked crystal, sounds really down to earth. sofiee licked tvb shoes in the first q&a and serves the other contestants who tried to lick tvbs shoes right for getting hard questions. I mean do they actually read tvb magazine as their favourite book? or promote miss hong kong as a tourist point? like come on.

    1. Crystal looked quite pretty but her interview was one of the hardest to watch.. I mean people are telling her to reenact the situation and she’s unwilling to… If I was a judge, I would think she has no confidence in public speaking.

As for the flattering part, I do wish their answers were not pre-rehearsed. If not, I’m not impressed with their answers. The TVB city answer was ok but the book answer was quite iffy.

    2. haha sounds great. maybe #3 was top five but wont be in top 3. hard to promote her.

      1. I disagree. Eliza and Bernice’s Cantonese were also mediocre. And look at how Christine is being promoted!

      2. get a grip. christines and oceans cantonese are worse than eliza and bernice.

      3. Exactly! And is Christine and Oceane not getting promoted? I don’t think so.

Even 1999’s 1st RU got promoted in that hit-sitcom in 2000 with Dayo Wong and Dodo Cheng.

If TVB really wants to, they really can. I dare to say, if Linna’s Cantonese was better, she would immediately be promoted at TVB’s current situation. They are in need of fadans. And, she seems to be more liked than this year’s winners LOL.

      4. christine was getting promoted until her weight issue came out. If her weight isnt an issue, she would be used more.

        idiot.

      5. Haha, please don’t call yourself a idiot.

In anyhow, was I replying to you?? Are you talking to yourself? I was replying to Julianne and telling her that a girl with decent Cantonese can still be promoted just like how Bernice, Eliza, Oceane, and Christine were.

And FYI – Leanne and Fala were also promoted.

        Idiot.

  36. being knowledgeable about pageants and undergoing the physical pressure of a pageant cant be replace each other. Two different things. Andrew may have the head knowledge or know trivia but its another story going through all of that within 4-5 months.

      1. Sandra, I do appreciate your comments and your ability to respond in a polite manner.

I personally prefer the words “close your mouth” over “shut up” but that’s me. Idiot doesn’t sound respectful right?

    1. Did I imply they were the same thing? I don’t know why you or others think I implied/explicitly state knowledge about pageants = undergoing physical pressure in the pageant.

And please let me correct your statement so the Jayne community don’t get confused again.

Rarely do pageants run for 4-5 months LOL.
If you start from the whole recruitment process to the final show, it’s more than 4-5 months. It can go up to a year at times. For example, the current Miss Venezuela was crowned last September. She got recruited in May and the final was September. That would be 5 months. However, she hasn’t ended her duties yet. She still needs to compete in Miss Universe. And she still hasn’t done that yet LOL!

She is still training and training for over another year so in reality, she undergoes pressure for 5 months plus another year and another few months when Miss Universe is expected to be held in December or January.

    2. And MSHK 2014 is a different case.

The recruitment started in June LOL and the pageant ended in September. Hmm, that’s 3 months of pressure for them?

And usually they don’t have pressure until they officially get accepted and start training/pageant activities. That usually ends in 2-3 months.

  37. Um why was my comment deleted for telling andrew politely that training is under discretion of the local pageant organizers? A miss chinese vancouver pageant winner doesnt get any more training. They get further trained at the same venue with the other pageant contestants. same thing with international pageants. seriously.

  38. Lol, you certainly have the choice not to read my comments. You also have the choice not to comment at all.

If you do actually read my comments, I’m only stating my opinion with statistics and explanations in a polite and respectful manner. Only if people start to curse at me do I treat them back the same way.

  39. Your statements does not sound like they are opinionated. if people politely challenged it, you go and tell them to close their mouth or dont even say anything if they are not experienced. how is that polite or well-respected?

  40. @Andrew,
In the real world, winners of beauty contests have features that the majority (of people in the host country), can relate to & can be ‘representative’ of, I daresay, the host demographics’ ethnicity. That’s why we’ll never have a blonde haired, blue-eyed Miss HK winner for the foreseeable future, as long as sponsors KNOW that the public majority cannot & will not relate to a foreign appearance over their own. Bad enough that we’ve the West trying to dictate to us, East Asians, that white caucasian features define the standards of beauty. We certainly don’t need your kind of one-sided, nonsensical criticisms of clearly, justified contest winners, like Veronica, just because they’ve stronger East Asian looks than Indian/non-Chinese looks a la Grace Chandra. Please peddle your anti-East Asian bulls-ite elsewhere.

    1. HAHA!!

Reading from your comments, I can tell you are a racist. Quite shameful and sad because we live in a world filled with races and ethnicities.

Even if some winners are not beautiful or rather plain looking, I wouldn’t call them names like you are.

Guess I am open to different races and colors unlike you.

AND FYI, THERE ARE MANY NON- Chinese looking contestants at Miss Hong Kong that have successfully competed AND WON.

Simply bashing Grace and not mentioning the others makes you quite biased and ugly as a person.

Why don’t you bash Victoria Jane Jolly (2002 1st RU), Annemarie Wood (1994’s 1st RU) or Mina G. (1984 winner)?? Or 2002’s #5?? Or 2012’s Melanie Lee?

Please admit you are verbally attacking Grace and a racist against Indians.

    2. And FYI –

Many of those girls that you considered “non-representative” of the country WERE FAVORED by the HK media to win.

      And indeed many have won.

Even the HK media and public are more open than you. That is truly a sad thing.

    3. I see now. You are related to Veronica. No wonder you are so angry and verbally attacking me.

FYI – it’s not just me that believes her victory was undeserving. Many bloggers also commented on the result being rigged.

If you believe her victory is as “justified” and as apparent as you claim it is, try to provide reasons to justify and support your claim.

Bashing Grace to make Veronica more of a “justified” winner won’t make you go anywhere.

For all I know, the HK media is also bashing and suspecting her victory. A recent poll started by Hong Kongers are also supporting Soffie as the winner of the contest.

    4. And let me tell you something Andy.

Grace is also the winner of MCI 2014 and is already filming a drama as 1st lead.

We will see if Veronica’s “East Asian” and traditional looks will help her win Miss Chinese International 2015 and land her major roles in TVB.

All for I know, I see her following Carat’s footsteps LMAO.

At least you can brag about her achievements as a interviewer then LOL!!!

  41. @Andrew,
Your lengthy rants across multiple posts indicate to me that you’re a troll with way too much time on your hands. Now, if Grace Chandra paid you for your efforts to promote her, I’d say you’ve been a hardworking employee albeit with a very ham-fisted approach to your objectives. Otherwise, nobody really gives flying 2 hoots about your delusions, especially since it’d need more than your feckless propaganda to redeem Grace Chandra’s below-average looks & wooden acting ‘skills’. Her tenure in TVB & mainstream entertainment will brief. Most Miss HK winners enjoy a brief honeymoon period in the entertainment industry by default before fizzling out into obscurity. This is hardly a testament to acting talent or lack of it.

    1. Rudest to the bones. It’s unfortunate that when you can’t have a peaceful or critical discussion with others, you start to launch personal attacks.

And it’s unfortunate you didn’t even bother to respond to my posts or counter argue my examples.

Every time you start a new comment, it’s just vandalism. Personal attacks and racist comments.

Forget it Andy, believe what you want to, I’m tied of wasting time and responding to your meaningless posts.

    2. I have to say though, you are a racist for commenting and trash talking her even if she is not your cup of tea.
