HKTV to Premiere Dramas Online During TVB Anniversary Month
Ricky Wong (王維基) announced that he will be launching a mobile and online television service for HKTV in November, during TVB Anniversary month.
HKTV, which had failed to obtain a free-to-air television license from the Hong Kong government, will broadcast programs via the OTT (Over-the-Top) format online. The programs, which include variety shows and dramas, will be available for Hong Kong audiences through Smart TV, computers, and HKTV’s mobile app. It is expected that audiences for HKTV will reach at least 500,000 people in Hong Kong.
An official date for the service’s launching has not been revealed yet, but it is rumored that Ricky Wong plans to unveil the service on November 19, the day of TVB’s Anniversary. An HKTV representative said, “We will announce the launch date when it is the right time.”
In addition, HKTV will start a public poll for netizens to choose the station’s debut drama. HKTV has already completed filming series such as Police Boundaries <警界線> starring Liu Kai Chi (廖啟智); Choose Your Battle <選戰> starring Angelica Lee (李心潔); and Flow of the Years <歲月樓情> starring Felix Wong (黃日華).
Artistes Comment on HKTV’s Launch
Felix Wong’s daughter, Adrian Wong (黃芷晴), expressed, “That’s good! I filmed some variety shows before and I’m very excited myself. It’s been two years already! If our productions can be released in November, then I will be able to show everyone my performances. I’ve filmed three dramas, and one was Brain Detective <開腦儆探>, which was with my father. I also filmed My Mother is a Black Rose <我阿媽係黑玫瑰> with Kara Hui (惠英紅) and another series called Final Days +5 <末日+5>. Of course, I’m most looking forward to the drama I filmed with my father!”
Leung Kin Ping (梁健平) expressed his excitement and said, “Of course, I’m thrilled to hear this! We all hope that our productions will be broadcasted for the public to enjoy. We’ve been waiting for so long!”
Zoey Sham (岑潔儀), who is six months pregnant, said, “There’s been a lot of sad news recently. This news is definitely the happiest I’ve heard in eight days! Many Hong Kong citizens support the launch of HKTV. We’ve all waited for two years. Now I’m even going to have a baby! I’m glad that my kids will have more [viewing] options to choose from!”

Hope this HKTV venture is very successful especially with better quality dramas. I hope we can see it in the US.
same here!
hope that people with do english sub for the show xD
Yeeeeeeee the best news I heard all day! Really hope they upload with English subs too! LOL
hope i can watch in the US
Wow!!! That is the first time I have heard!!!! Good luck HKTV!!! Well…..tvb is a very big company they should give more money paybacks to all TVB actors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Feisty for Ricky Wong to start HKTV during TVB Anniversary. Going to be an interesting battle
Boooooo! Dislike Ricky Wong and his gangs, arrogant & unprofessional. That’s bad news, I think they’ll probably won’t survive long
Competition is good. Hope HKTV will force TVB to produce better quality television.
HKTV drama could be as bad (or worse), or maybe very boring. Cannot trust trailers
Maybe we should watch the dramas first before we knock them down?
Gave up when watching half of the trailers. B-O-R-I-N-G
Well-said, jujubean!
Why don’t you guys all watch HKTV’s series / shows first before knocking them down? With no prior history to go by (since HKTV hasn’t aired any series yet – only trailers and 1 full episode of one series), most “normal” people wouldn’t be able to tell that their series will for sure “suck” without having watched their programs…obviously “haters” speaking right there.
Honestly, I’m tired of all the animosity toward HKTV – some of it is probably warranted, but majority of it is not….what’s wrong with giving them a chance and seeing how things pan out? If they succeed, then great, but if they fail, then at least they were given a chance to try. And I disagree with people who claim that supporting HKTV is betraying TVB – my family and I have been supporters of TVB for decades and continue to be to this day despite all their screw-ups…yet I’m also a huge supporter of HKTV and the efforts being made to bring change to the HK television industry (though whether they will succeed or not remains to be seen). It’s definitely possible to be supporters of both and I’m sure there are many of us out there who fall into this category. Sure, people may hate Ricky Wong (I’m not particularly fond of him either), but is that a good reason to hate HKTV and their programs as well as all the artists, producers, writers, and everyone else who works for him?
Let’s put things in perspective here — over the past 3 to 4 years since this whole license battle started and HKTV has been in existence, I have yet to hear one good reason why we should all “hate” HKTV and hope that they fail (and no – “loyalty to TVB” does not count as a good reason in my book, since, as I stated above, it’s possible to be loyal to TVB and still support HKTV).
Anyway, I’ve lectured enough, so I’ll get off my soapbox now. Just going to throw in there that my vote is definitely going to Borderline (aka Police Boundaries), as I’ve been wanting to watch that series ever since the first episode was aired (plus it definitely helps that I love Liu Kai Chi and also like Dominic Lam). I’m also interested in Fantasy Love Song (mainly because I love musicals) and also Flow of the Years (so many excellent veteran artists battling acting chops). Oh and I would like to watch News Catalyst as well (though not too fond of the cast), mostly because it’s different (plus I want to see what TVB missed out on, since they would’ve had a chance to make this series if management hadn’t rejected the idea)….
i don’t like ricky wong but i am keen to watch hktv series, if only to see all the veteran actors we have missed on our screens for so many years. i just hope this isn’t another empty promise. it would be painful to see them disappointed again.
I agree and honestly, whether they are good or not is still down to a matter of opinion. One thing I just wish for is for some good ancient series from HK. I admit that I really enjoy the China ones but still miss some good ones from HK. I guess many companys like Tvb are way too cheap to make good ancient series nowadays. I really miss the old days where they focused on ancient series more. I guess HKTV is still new so I hope they will be successful and will put out the money and effort for better quality ancient series in the near future.
One thing’s for sure. Competition is among TV broadcast stations is good for us. Hope you can at least see that point.
As bad as HKTV content may turn out to be, it’s still going to be better than the low quality productions that TVB has tossed out to the public these past 5 years.
Sorry to say, but hktv won’t last that long, they are not making good money from that. 2 thumbs down.
TVB anniversary is going to crush them
Penny, I understand you’re a diehard fan, but if you’re gonna talk trash, at least get your facts straight.
All of the money that Ricky Wong had invested in HKTV (and I do mean ALL EXPENSES), are interest that were INCURRED from investments in the money he made from selling CITI TELECOM. Theoretically, he hasn’t spent a penny of his own money in HKTV. For you to say that HKTV (and Ricky Wong) to go bankrupt in the short-term or long-term is VERY UNLIKELY. Nice try, troll.
I don’t agree with you on that. It’s hard to say that he will succeed in his so called online drama “business” If audiences does not like the “dramas”. It’s going to go down anyway. Doesn’t mean he’s going to go bankrupt, it’s just that it will fail. Plus, not interested in the so called HKTV dramas. It’s just another ATV.
Lisa – Whether it will appeal to the audience, that will remain to be seen. However, Penny argues financially that HKTV will not survive, and my rebuttal is that it will. What aspect of that do you disagree with?
The Hong Kong government will unfortunately put the brakes to HKTV again.
Penny,
How do you know for sure TVb will crush them? Can you tell the future? I used to be a very big tvb fan in the 80s and 90s. But honestly you have to admit that their productions,acting,storylines,etc..have all gone downhill. I have not seen a good tvb series for the longest time. But luckily we have more choices these days like a China,Korea, Japanese, etc… To see so it is not only tvb.
What wrong with this guy… Everything he do is again tvb…
You can not go far by doing business this way.
Good luck to him
I’m with you! TVB rules.
He can never beat TVB
Jun,
HKTV hasn’t even broadcast one full drama series yet. How can I possibly be a sheep?
I’m always up for a good debate; however, like you and Penny that talks trash about HKTV. I respect your stance, but will criticize your opinion, because unlike me, none of you can produce facts to support your claims, and with every statement I make, I can back it up with facts. Stop arguing based on emotions. You’re making a fool out of yourself.
HKTV did air one episode online on Police Boundaries. It is a very long wait for episode 2 to come out.
Larry 3,
They did air one full episode? What did you think of it? Was it good?
I don’t even remember the whole premise back a year ago.
It’s called sizing up and giving a knock at your competition. Pepsi and Coca Cola do this against each other all of the time. I can’t blame you for lacking the intelligence in understanding basic business strategies, cause you’re most likely another TVB mindless sheep. Go back to watching your TVB dramas for the IQ of less than 80.
FYI Anon,
Your a HKTV mindless sheep. It’s not going to work out.
Jun,

@Anon
In that case then majority or can say all the readers from this site is with IQ less than 80, as far as I’m concerned, all of us watch Line Walker.
And is this the way u DEBATE?? MOCKING at others to WIN??? –SO LOW—
Ricky seems to be taking a low-key approach ever since his loss to obtain a license. Should be interesting since I think the majority didn’t know about his mobile/online launch.
Let’s see how TVB retaliates. Haha
TVB don’t have to retaliate. They can just stay still and watch HKTV fail on it’s own. HKTV should learn to walk first before running. they will fail big time
HKTV is here to stay, Mark my words.
@Anon
No need to argue, it’s going to be unsuccessful
hktv is the same as tvb. lol.
same boring actors.
Hktv artists and crews were all robbed from tvb, so what’s the difference in their dramas?
“Oh! I left tvb & I suddenly have the absolute best script”
Or as an artist:
“Oh! I left tvb & I suddenly can act much better”
Like come on, the 4th or 5th line actors/actresses are just given heavier roles, but their acting are just the same old same old. Scriptwriters are also the same level, they’re all basically the same old tvb scriptwriters
hktv is just the a no name brand trying to mimic tvb. It’s not going to last, positive on that. Hktv, Ricky Wong and his artists are very arrogant and love to bash tvb(an unprofessional & naive behavior ). Never heard tvb or their artists bash the so called HKTV. Hktv is a joke from the very beginning
@June: You obviously haven’t been following the license thing or taken the time to read up about HKTV and TVB. To answer your question “what is the difference” since most are formerly from TVB? Well, Ricky Wong put it best when he said during the launch program for his station last year (and I’m paraphrasing here): when they [the artists / scriptwriters] were at TVB, they were in a zoo – caged in and limited in what they could do; at HKTV, they have been put into the wild – free to roam and explore their natural selves.
Come on now – most of us who have been following TVB for awhile understand how that company operates. There are a lot of restrictions and limitations at TVB – some of the rules are written, but most of them are not….and management has huge influence on the productions. For example, some of the former TVB scriptwriters who moved on to HKTV commented that some of the scripts that they had wanted to write at TVB and bring to fruition on the small screen were rejected and banned by management for being “controversial” or for some other reason. When these same scriptwriters went on to HKTV, they were able to write those scripts that they had been wanting to do for years, and write them the way they want to write them (without interference from management).
And if the above doesn’t clarify, here’s a more concrete example: TVB producer Wong Wai Sing (he produced last year’s Inbound Troubles and also the upcoming sequel) revealed during an interview last year that he had actually wanted to make a series very similar to HKTV’s News Catalyst for a very long time – he had even presented the story concept to TVB management, however the execs rejected the idea on the basis that it was “too controversial” and also painted the news media in a “negative light”, which could possibly damage TVB’s relationship with certain media outlets. So in the end, Wong Wai Sing had to scrap the idea. Well, obviously, TVB’s loss is HKTV’s gain in this case, as the idea was brought to HKTV and was allowed to move forward.
In terms of the acting – um, well, there are numerous differences. Just to name a few… 1) let’s start with the 100% script completion before filming commences part – any true actor will tell you that preparation time to learn and absorb themselves in their roles is crucial to giving a good performance. If you’re not getting the script for a scene until the night before and have to rush to learn your lines in one night, how do you expect to do a good job (that’s what many of the artists go through at TVB). On the other hand, HKTV requires the script to be 100% complete and distributed to the artists way in advance, thereby giving the artists the time to “do their homework” and prepare for their roles, which in turn, makes their acting better. 2) Ask any consummate actor and they will tell you that filming in a real location makes a huge difference when it comes to acting (and no, it’s not just HKTV artists that have said this – current TVB artists have talked about this too – Power Chan comes to mind as having commented on this earlier in the year…and Sheren Tang has been trying to get this point across for years). The experience of working in a real location makes the performance more real for the artists and makes it easier to get into character. Sheren Tang gave a great example of this several years ago during an interview when she talked about her experience filming TVB’s “No Regrets” – she and Wayne filmed one of the church scenes on a fake set in TVB City and it was very hard to concentrate because the set was so fake, some of the props needed fixing (she kept getting distracted by a fake wall that she thought would fall down any minute). She even posed the question — how are they supposed to convince audiences that they are in war-torn Guangzhou when the set obviously looks like they are on a fake set in a studio?
I’m very excited to see the HKTV shows finally aired. I saw some of their teasers on youtube, (like 10 minutes of an episode) and couldn’t wait to see the rest.
I hope HKTV is here to stay.
Some pessimists are not giving HKTV a chance. If the online viewings are numerous and writeups in the tabloids are positive, the other free TV channels may “buy” rights to the HKTV shows or dramas which may bring in revenue. Or they can do a partnership with HKTV to show their dramas and share in the advertisers’ revenues. HKTV really has nothing to lose. Only TVB will be the loser as their stranglehold on viewers will decline due to other quality shows being shown.
I understand that there are diehard TVB fans. It’s cool, we all have something we believe in. But man, if you’re gonna argue, at least provide a good counter argument, instead of making blank statements. It makes you look like a retard. lol
Although Im not a fan of HKTV, sometimes I think some TVB diehard fans are so funny. They are talking like TVB is taking over the world and whoever leave TVB are bad guys. They even bash the series from any other channels or China series without watching a second. They allow them to think that only their favourite TVB artists are good and all others are terrible. They give them the right to bash any artist they dont like but nobody should give a word to praise the artist they dont like. They praise their favourite TVB artists like gods or saint on earth but at the same time, if anyone dare to say the similar thing to an artist they dont like, they will bombard with a lot of bashes and personal attacks.
I witness all in this forum so I dont feel surprise anymore. Sometimes I feel it is so pointless to argue with those fans because somehow, they are putting themselves in the 9th cloud as their idols. HKTV will do its jobs and provide its fans the thing they want for years. Why TVB fans do not just sit and see if HKTV can do anything?
P/S: I still dont like how Ricky Wong and HKTV artists shot TVBuddy last time. It was like a plain jealousy.
I agree with you, Alluka (for once we agree…lol). In addition to that TVBuddy incident being low-class, I also didn’t like how HKTV mocked May Jeh and her program during the protest last year (and personally I felt the whole “turn off the TV” movement was impractical, dumb, and a huge waste of time – though granted, HKTV wasn’t the one who started that so I’ll cut them some slack on it).
The way I see it – Ricky Wong and HKTV have made their fair share of mistakes in the past 4 years, but I don’t see that as reason to discredit the good things they’ve done and not give them a chance. By the same token, TVB and their management have made more than enough mistakes in their past 47 years of existence, yet they’ve also done a lot of good and have been given chance after chance. Even ATV – as poor of an excuse for a TV station as they are now (and talk about making mistakes…boy, ATV probably wrote the book on it in my opinion)…they also did a lot of good things back in the day as well (many of TVB’s best actors/actresses as well as producers originally came from ATV…and let’s not forget the glory days of RTV (ATV’s predecessor)).
As others in this thread have already said – instead of letting our emotional investment in a certain company / brand / idol get the best of us, why not argue with a rational, well-informed, open mind and let the pieces fall as they may? Oh and in my opinion, it’s always better to be informed than ignorant….so hopefully people stop lowering themselves to the level of trolls with mindless bashing that has no basis in fact.
Wasnt following this saga. Appreciate it if someone could fill me in on the TVBuddy and May Jeh incidents referred to here.
HKTV is been a joke at the start. They should have been on tv now showing Occupy Central for god shakes.
how do they do this when they do not have broadcast license??
they could have set up a online tv web channel by now instead of getting a tv license.
Hktv is the joke
Finally some variety, extra competition is always good for industry, the more they try to outdo each other the better quality programs you’ll get (ideally).
Agreed. Just take a look at what happened last year (and part of the year prior) when HKTV was constantly in TVB’s face — that is, until the govt’s license decision stopped everything in its tracks. Remember how just the “threat” of competition from HKTV caused TVB to step up their game big time? For example, TVB made some concessions to their archaic policies / practices such as requiring scripts to be 80% complete before filming (HKTV started that with their “100% complete scripts prior to filming” policy, though Sheren Tang deserves credit too for TVB changing their ways after her very public complaints about the “on-the-fly” scripts), allowing productions to film in “real” locations outside of HK again rather than having majority of the filming done on fake sets in their own studio, reinstating many of the “perks” that TVB artists used to get in the old days, such as annual dinners and special parties to boost morale, pocket money for transportation and such when attending work-related events, better filming equipment, more rest time, better meals when filming on location, etc. etc….the list goes on and on. Basically TVB stopped being the ‘cheapskates’ that they were previously under Mona Fong’s rule and started treating their artists a little better overall (remember how even Eric Tsang said last year that he was really discouraged by what TVB was becoming in recent years but in the past year or so they really changed for the better). But then once the license decision came out and TVB no longer felt ‘threatened’ by HKTV, some of the perks (thankfully not all) were rolled back. If TVB never felt threatened (as they claimed) and don’t view HKTV as formidable competition, then why make those “improvements” at such a sensitive time?
HKTV’s presence brought to light alot of TVB’s flawed policies and practices, which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, as it helped TVB improve (after all, before one can improve, one has to first recognize and acknowledge one’s issues/problems). Hopefully the same thing happens next year in that the competition helps both parties improve for the better.
Definitely, also on a side note, I can finally finish off that Police boundaries they had on youtube lol.
Competition is ON !!! Let’s cheer for the underdog.
Who’s Adrian Wong? Leung Kin Ping? Zoey Sham?
Beats me
Who cares if you don’t know them, you have to start somewhere in your career.
Look at the previous Miss HK winners that want to act in TV-series. They don’t have any acting experience and some of them are now very famous.
Nowadays, a lot of TVB actors and actresses are going to Mainland China eventually to earn more money, thus leaving TVB. This results more junior actors and actresses to take more leading roles and some of them are quite bad in it, but I can forgive them because they don’t have a lot of acting experience yet.
@june
Totally agree!

You sound like you’ve already watched a full production. I applaud you for your psychic ability.
Almost everyone seems so negative about a new TV competitor.
My opinion is that is a good thing: more TV-series and shows for the Cantonese people, whether the new TV-series and shows are bad or good is a subjective matter, some may like it or some not, at least we have more choice which TV-series to watch.
Don’t forget Ricky Wong company has a lot of money on the balance by selling his previous company. He is in for the long term and I really hope at least he will break-even for the sake of Cantonese people who love watching Cantonese TV-series and shows.
I don’t really get the animosity here. If they succeed, that’s another place for actors and actresses to make their living and ply their craft. If they succeed, they might be able to challenge TVB and TVB will try their hand at making different types of series. Even if they’re not a direct competitor, at least it’s another place for us to watch series from. Don’t see how that’s a bad thing at all.
funny how so many people are taking HKTV broadcast so personally. Growing up in the States always had at least 5 major tv networks. Always thought it was strange Hong Kong basically has 2 at any given time.
I know there is constant bashing of ATV but have people forgotten some of the best “recent” actors came from ATV like Joey Meng, Ruco Chan, Krystal Tin, Raymond Wong?
usa has 317 million ppl and hk has 7 million. do you think hk can afford the same amount of free tv station as usa? i mean isnt it then to much of competition? personally i think 3 free tv station is already enough for such a small place like hk.
to me i hope that the hk government will withraw the free to air license from atv,and give it to hktv and with i cable tv and pccw they already have 4 free tv in the future, im afraid that they dont have enough ads to make some profit.
I lived in Chicago population 3 mil including local networks we had 11 free channels. I just quoted 5 major networks for whole country.
well, if you count the channels in china, there’s alot more. don’t know how many major tv networks in china but quite a handful.
Omg someone sure have pay by hktv to defence all the comments here…
Notice that all comments who is little negative has a defence answer… Haha
That is so BS to think that anyone who defends HKTV is paid by them. On the same token, you can also say that TVB paid all of the die hard fans here to defend them and put them on the highest pedestal even though there is no doubt that they are going downhill and lacking in everything.
hope they start soon. tired of waiting for good dramas from tvb…. these days they are so far and few in between….
I am glad to hear that news. Congrats to Ricky Wong and his staff. Looking forward to the release i cannot view the series from overseas. But will emotionally support HKTV anyway.
You can always download the TV-series, it is not hard to find these series online after the broadcast.
I have TVpad. I hope they will record 5his series. I have access to most broadcasting series in both hk and mainland china up to three days after broadcasting. I watched one ep of that police series they released back then and want to find out what happens.
I also want to watch the one with felix and bao hei jing. Or even the media one with noel leung.
TVB, abuse their power by providing low quality TV programs in order to lower the production cost and increase profit. Due to the lack of competition within the industry, the quality of these shows produced by the tvb and atv have deteriorated by a lot over the past few years. I cannot wait for HKTV to release their shows. Otherwise, viewing options for HKers will ne scarced while TV stations will be monopolized by TVB..kind of like having one restaurant on the street for the past 50 years, eating the same food everyday.
Online is the way to go. I mean you can lock the browser and make the audience watch the commercials not like TV. HKTV should do online. I can’t wait to watch them…as long as there’s subtitles!
Looks like several people have asked about English subtitles on HKTV’s series. My suggestion is to go to HKTV’s Facebook page and ask for it — if enough people ask for English subtitles and the demand is great enough, there is a chance that HKTV will do it. The reason I say this is because throughout the past 2-3 years that I’ve been closely following this whole license issue and HKTV-related news, one of the biggest things I’ve noticed that sets HKTV apart from TVB is their “sincerity” — whether it’s sincerity in terms of filming quality series or sincerity in listening to audience feedback, they’ve definitely done a better job in this area than TVB.
For instance, last year when they released the trailers for their series and the first episode of Borderline, the initial intent was to release them on HKTV’s Youtube channel, which they did. Not long after that however, people who didn’t have access to Youtube (i.e. audiences in Mainland China for example) complained that they couldn’t watch the first episode because they can’t access Youtube. What do you think HKTV did when they heard this? Instead of taking the “TVB approach” (which would have been “sorry, but that’s the way it is…too bad for you”), HKTV actually took the time to convert the first episode and all their trailers into Tudou and Youku versions and re-post all of them up so that audiences who didn’t have access to Youtube but could access Tudou or Youku could watch as well.
Oh and they DID release an English subtitle version of Borderline’s first episode as well as a few of their other trailers (because quite a few audiences requested it)…of course, doing the subtitles on the entire series takes more time than doing it for just one episode, but hey, with their track record of listening to audiences the past 3 years, they might agree to do it.
Lastly, after reading some of the comments in this thread questioning the quality of HKTV’s series, I decided to re-post the link to an article that came out last year (June 2013) about “the making of” Borderline — there’s alot of good information in the article about HKTV’s production values as well as business philosophy…and for the dissenters out there, it will give you guys some insight as to why current and former HKTV employees have been so supportive of Ricky Wong and HKTV as a company — and also why they have such huge audience support as well. I may not end up liking each of the series that HKTV produces (each person’s tastes are different after all), but I definitely appreciate the efforts that HKTV put into making their series.

Support HKTV…sure will online watch all HKTV tv series. I think HKTV tv series is more more better than TVB. Mr Wong don’t worry ur company sure will very successful.
Screw TVB garbage. Bring on the competition and drive the quality of HK series up. None of this low grade monopolising stupidity with TVB and the Govt.
I don’t get the “support one station”, bah another. I personally don’t care if the show is with TVB or HKTV so as long as it’s good entertainment. Don’t get why one has to take sides. Just like I don’t care if I watch NBS or CBS. I watch whatever network that has the show I like.
I like your thinking. No need to take sides.
By having more competitions then will have better options. Missed those days where we can get good quality dramas. Which is proven the actors from the earlier generation can do very much better. For instance Michael Miu in the recent Line Walker and I like Chilam Cheung in Condor Heroes, etc.
I don’t want see the ruin of cantonese drama “empire” as conquered by others. I am proud to have grown up having the best Cantonese language lessons. Though I don’t read Chinese but I speak very good Cantonese. Kinda a bonus!
Unless something changed, how can they reach 500,000 premises?
“Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA) notified Hong Kong Television Network (HKTV) this afternoon that the existing license HKTV holds limits its transmissions to reach an audience of no more than 5,000 premises, and if it reaches over 5,000 premises, HKTV is required to apply for a free-to-air or pay-tv license.”
That rule is only for Mobile TV licenses, not for a OTT network. They won’t need to apply for a mobile tv license if they are airing over the internet and not over a mobile spectrum
