Jackie Chan Criticizes Occupy Central for Affecting Hong Kong’s Economy

Jackie Chan (成龍) dropped a rather controversial comment about Hong Kong’s current political strife. In his  Sina Weibo message, the action star criticized Occupy Central, the pro-democracy protest that is currently ongoing in Hong Kong, for negatively affecting Hong Kong’s economy.

It has been a while since Jackie last left a message on his official Weibo. The last time was on August 20, when he apologized about his son Jaycee Chan’s (房祖名) marijuana drug scandal, which has led mainland China to put an industry-wide ban on celebrities implicated in the scandal.

On October 11, Jackie left a new message on his Weibo account, where he shared his thoughts about Hong Kong’s current situation. He stated, “I saw in the news that economic losses in Hong Kong have reached to $350 billion HKD. This makes me very anxious. I believe that all Hong Kong people love Hong Kong and wants it to do well! Hong Kong’s beautiful future needs to have everyone’s support and hard work. According to the lyrics in ‘Nation’ <國家>, there cannot be a prosperous home without a powerful country. I am willing to work together with everyone, to return to reason, and face the future. Love our country and love our Hong Kong.”

Chinese netizens have showed their support to Jackie’s message, but there were also some who reacted coldly to Jackie’s message: “Discipline your son first. If you can’t even manage your family, how can you manage politics?”

  1. Mr.Chan come to the States and help to solve Ebola’s problem there. Obama not doing a good job at the White House. Don’t worry about your Hong Kong’s problems, currently we have the worst health crisis ever happened to humans! You words and wisdoms could help!

    1. Not being sarcastic at all. I have confidence in Mr. Chan for him to be the spokesperson representing Asia’s voice to combat Ebola epidemic hitting the world right now.

Some of the Hong Kong population had degraded the moral values of Mr.Chan based on his past histories such as producing an out-of wedlock child and neglecting own spouse.

But, from the populations of the Western countries,he is greatly admired and trustworthy!

      1. LOL, second all you’ve said.

He certainly has mastered the art of exemplary err, diplomacy?

    1. No it is not. THIS IS A LIE!

It is an universal health epidemic crisis. Next time if you board a Air Canada from Toronto to Hong Kong, look out who is sitting besides you. If he or she sneeze, cough and appear unfit, you may feel uncomfortable too!

It doesn’t mean the passenger had to be an African origin. Ebola could hits Caucasian, Chinese, Koreans, Middle Eastern, Europeans and others.

It is sad that Obama did not take an early pre-cautionary efforts to keep Ebola epidemic at bay in the States! Now there are two serious Ebola patients, one already died. Another person is a 26 years old Asian-American young girl (nurse) who is struggling heart to survive Ebola at a Texas hospital.

    2. i really don’t understand something…ebola has been around for a long long time. i don’t know why it has just made news recently. people have been visiting africa for a long time, why has the virus just started to spread all of the sudden now?

      1. m0m0, the current ebola epidemic is a NEW STRAIN of the virus.

    3. You sound like a paranoid idiot! The Flu will harm and kill more people, especially in the US, than Ebola ever will and guess what, the Flu is actually airborne! Why don’t you learn a little before spouting stupid conspiracy theories that could do more harm than good! Jeez.

  2. Jackie Chan kisses ass China because he has been doing business with them/in the country.

I’m going to boycott his movies. I used to like his movies because they have comedy and kung fu. But, he is a terrible husband, father, and a person!!!

    1. My name says it all too. I’ll make up your boycotting of his movies by buying more. Just b/c people (he and many others) who don’t agree with the protesters, doesn’t make them worse. To each his/her own opinion.

    2. so, i was wondering…

If you have a new boss and he does not like you…can he criticise your words, your thoughts, your work and perhaps fire you?

      1. It depends. If your boss is a communist, yeah he can fire your ass without any reason n you won’t be able do anything about it. He doesn’t just manage your job, he manages your lifestyle too. You won’t be able to speak your thoughts, voice your disagreement, listen to music or read books you like, browse the worldwide web freely or eating foods that are safe for human. He’s powerful isn’t he? (Sarcasm)

    3. To Lucia,
He’s an actor, like his movie because he can act, not dislike him because of his personal life unless his personal life is affecting you.

For example, I’ve always been a big fan of the late Leslie Cheung. I like him very much, to me he’s good looking, can sing well, can act well, can dance well. When news broke out that he’s a gay, I still continue to like him. That is his personal life, it has nothing to do with me.

      I just don’t understand some pppl’s thinking.

      1. Except there is NOTHING wrong with being gay and everything wrong with mr. Chan as a person (infidelity, hypocrite, liar, terrible father/husband, defending China’s corruption for his own profit).

        False equivalency here.

      2. I support Athena’s comment. Nothing wrong with homosexuality but everything wrong with Jacky Chan’s morality.

      3. @ bloom:

Trying to follow your analogy here.
Leslie = his choice of lifestyle
JChan = also, his choice of lifestyle?

Except the flaw in your logic is as Athena has outlined.
There is a basic code of ethics. Leslie has not flouted that by his lifestyle, sexual gravitation or choice of partner … but Jackie has flouted basic decency as a human being – rejecting/neglecting your own child, illegitimate or otherwise … is one of those.

      4. @nomad 822

The difference is that Leslie’s lifestyle did not hurt anybody, whereas Jackie Chan’s choices hurt those around him. Just look where his son is now.

      5. @ j00ky:

        Exacto.

A poor excuse of a human being, who doesn’t deserve respect (in my bks anyway) despite his outward trophies of success for world viewing and raving.

Yes his personal life is his own. But it also doesn’t mean I have to respect such a person, esp not a performing monkey (I have seen him on Jay Leno, and he’s a far cry from enigmatic Mr Chow in conducting himself, even though both their conversational English levels aren’t that great).

If one has the cheek to take the title of Big Brother, I would expect his behavior to be at least of acceptable decent standards.

Measurement of ‘success’ and money alone doesn’t do it to earn Big Brother title.

        – disappearing for up to 2 yrs per time, in Jaycee’s life to the point JC was so out of it he didn’t even know his son had gone onto high school
        – not even acknowledging the daughter you were a part of bringing into the world.

Poor excuse for a father, husband and human being. And plain selfish.

  3. “Discipline your son first. If you can’t even manage your family, how can you manage politics?”

    It is more than correct.

  4. Jackie Chan is an uneducated, narrow minded, egotistic womanizer.

Hong Kong may suffer a short term loss now due to protests but they are fighting to ensure a better Hong Kong for the future. Mainland is so corrupted, I hope Hong Kong doesn’t become like that without putting up a fight.

    1. IF you have a stall in Mong Kok and your livelihood depended on it – i am sure you ll dance to a different tune

    2. “Jackie Chan is an uneducated, narrow minded, egotistic womanizer.”

It’s not easy being Jackie Chan. He’s not a good father, husband and etc. Did Joan Lin say so? No! It’s takes one to know one. As for the dragon seed, it was a selfish decision that Elaine made and she has to take on both roles(mom, dad).

When the dame kids are happy, so are the parents. In this case, it’s always the parents that are at fault. Yup, Joan and Jacky are the bad parents because they gave him too much freedoms lol. Kids and their freedoms $$$$$ lol. 😀 🙁 LOL!

      1. “The difference is that Leslie’s lifestyle did not hurt anybody, whereas Jackie Chan’s choices hurt those around him. Just look where his son is now.”

Leslie killed himself and that didn’t hurt? Kids, nowadays have too much freedom and abused it. He he, ha ha when there is fun but when trouble comes mom and dad to the rescue. It’s like a stab to the heart. 😀 🙁 LOL!

  5. Ignoring his family problems with his son and whatnot, the comment that he made is not at all incorrect. The movement occurring in Hong Kong right now has continued for such a long time and is indeed causing many economic problems for a great deal of Hong Kong citizens. However, that’s just the thing with anything in politics. There is no right choice, and there’s never going to be a perfect situation in which everyone is happy and no one suffers any losses.

  6. Jackie Chan’s movies will surely be allowed to be shown in movie houses in Mainland China.

    1. Or perhaps he wants to help his son by supporting Mainland China ……………. hoping Chinese Government will be more lenient to his son’s drug crime.

      1. i also think so,he have to say that otherwise his son will get a more heavier punishment.

    2. Given his original chinese name means, “birth in HK” – one would expect him to be loyal to HK.

Meh – he seems to have his priorities with his son. I guess mystery unsolved. He doesn’t have a true stance on anything anyways. I don’t need a celebrity’s opinion to form my own opinion!

  7. Jackie Chan’s comment is more than right though i personally think that he might just have said it to leave a great impression for the mainland goverment. What the students are doing right now is simply destroying HK’s economy. China has nothing to worry about HK’s economy loss. Nor do they care about some few hundred spoiled brats who are “trying to fight” for HK’s future.

    1. “China has nothing to worry about HK’s economy loss.” Then…let Hong Kong be independent! Hong Kong is a golden goose, an international economic gateway. Greedy China even want to take over islands n ocean that don’t belong to them, think they gonna give up HK? Smh…Stay in school my friend!

      1. From an economic standpoint, it’s naive to say that Hong Kong can survive without China. It is an international economic gateway nowadays due mainly to its SAR status within China. As well, Hong Kong has a lot of business dealings with Mainland, so if China were to sanction off Hong Kong, Hong Kong would lose a detrimental amount of business (before even considering other side effects) that would put their economic survival into question.

In China’s perspective though, they can survive quite comfortably without Hong Kong. Shanghai is already a powerful international hub, and Shenzhen, which is right next to Hong Kong, is one of China’s major business districts. I would say one of the biggest reasons for not letting go of Hong Kong is pride. I mean, considering not only China–but say Canada with Quebec and the UK with Scotland–no country would be okay with freely letting go of a part of their territory.

      2. Cannot agree with Commentator more. HK’s economy is too intertwined with the Mainland. If HK goes independent, it will be detrimental to its economy. Which is why Scotland voted to be with UK.

      3. Canada+Quebec and UK+Scotland scenarios are different. The diiference is…”communism.” The people of Scotland WANT to be united with UK. The people of Hong Kong DON’T. HK being independent doesn’t mean China and HK will never ever do trade together. China and U.S. hate each other, but do you see them stop doing business with each other? Business is business. And, HK is a financial hub for hundreds of international financial corps n banks (NOT sweatshop factories). No country would turn their back on doing business with HK. I’m sure the Brittish would gladly take HK back if China doesn’t want HK or let it be independent. HK will do just fine without China. (I haven’t buy products made in China for a long time now and I still do just fine. Lol!) Anyhow, China want to control this $$$bloodline = POWER. It will NEVER give up the golden goose HOng Kong. Only naive ppl would think HK can not survive without China.

      4. Btw, as much as I know, the protesters aren’t fighting to be independent from China. So we don’t have to go on n on abt whether HK can survive or not. The protesters r fighting for a democracy system. Wouldn’t you want to live in a democratic society?

      5. As much as I enjoy the privilege of having grown up in a democratic western society, it cannot be said that full democracy will work in every other country as well. Take for example the sheer size of China both physically and demographically. The system would be so inefficient and so ineffective if you implement a western democratic system in a country of over 1.3 billion people.

HK separating from China doesn’t necessarily equate to HK being sanctioned off from China, but the reality is, if that ever does happen, that is the most likely scenario considering Mainland’s ego. China controls a powerful network of trades internationally. As much as western societies disagree with the Chinese government’s values and actions, they cannot go around blasting China either as they cannot afford to cut off all business ties with China–you as an individual can, but it is not a sustainable action for countries as whole. Therefore, in the event that HK somehow does cut itself off from China, it is unlikely the UK would take Hong Kong back in fear of China severing business ties with them.

      6. Besides money value, losing control of Hong Kong means losing the pride of China. They will never give Hong Kong up.

  8. Jacky may be right BUT he is worried about his pocket first — He is afterall a mouth piece for China.

    1. Worried about his pocket? You do understand that he’s donating 100% of his wealth when he passes away right? Currently, he has enough $$$ to live very nicely already.

      1. Yeah right. Hes gonna donate his full fortune to charity. Puhlease. He’s still going to leave a ton for his family – he’s already said so. He backtracked on that whole fortune donation statement. It’s BS.

      2. I believe that JC won’t leave his $ to his fam. He has been working hard … alone … to get to his status today so family-love will never be his priority. JC is a high-ego man who’s obsessed with fame and power. (yup, he’s totally “China”). Of course, he would speak up after hearing many HK famous actors are supporting the protest.

      3. You’re confusing Jackie Chan with Chow Yun Fat. Two COMPLETELY different people.

      4. @Tayna. Its funny because Jackie thinks he’s some sort of God father figure of the HK industry. He can go on believing that whilst having his western fan base kisses his ass meanwhile in HK no one cares about him and know his true face. Even his western fans are deluded by his act and aren’t aware of his outbursts etc he would still happily take shit about them. In terms of career/lifestyle he’s safe to say and do whatever he wants as he is untouchable as Xi right now.

      5. No, I’m not confuse JC with CYF, lol! I meant JC had to speak up FOR CHINA after hearing other famous actors supporting the protesters.

  9. Yeah just keep shutting our mouths and do nothing just to have a few more dollars in our pockets. Yeah, sure that’s the right thing to do. Jackie Chan is dumber than the asses he kisses.

  10. He has always been pro china and pro money so I am not surprised at what he said. In a way he is right but he is also wrong, depending on which side you’re looking at the protests.

    1. i have respect for the students idealistic thought, but chan have a point that the student are causing huge economic losses for the retail owners by blocking the streets of mongkok for several weeks now.imagine the high rent in hk and i understand why some ppl are furious on the students.they claim the protest are peaceful but indirectly they do harm innocent ppl.

      1. if the students really can gain something ok, but i dont think they can get what they want. china will never allow that hk citizens may choose their own chief executive. in the end the short term of pain will never be pay out for the hk citizens.

  11. DO NOT JUDGE, you don’t know who are controlling jackie chan’s speeches now, especially when he’s trying his best to help his ‘simple minded’ son

    1. please, he’s always been a China-arse-kisser.

he cares more about himself than his son that’s obvious too

  12. ive always thought that celebrities should really keep their opinions to hemselves when it comes to politics becaause it can be such a controversial topic. Imean unless you can do something beneficial on the poltical situation, then perhaps. But even so, being a public figure its best to keep poltics at bay.

Being a forgeigner /not from HK, seeing the news about the protests, makes me really respect and admire the students over there for their persistency and motivation to protect their rights and make a change. But it’s also sad to see that it does really look like their protest will get no where in terms of making actually changes…at least they tried, and they have made headlines around the world with their movement. Wish HK alll the best!

    1. Another very wrong conspiracy theory! I guess it’s easier to go that route than give HK students credit in actually wanting to pick their own leaders, someone who will fight more for HK’s interests than China’s. It’s easier to color the protesters with one brush than to confront and listen to the real concerns of a vibrant part of the community.

  13. Truth be told though I dont know why Xi would even pick up the phone to Putin since he finds Chinese people to be beneath Russians. China’s big enough to fed off every country now.

  14. He wants to target the china market that’s why he is siding them
