Sire Ma Tops Google HK’s Most Searched Celebrities of 2014
Google Hong Kong released its list of top-ten most searched Hong Kong celebrities of 2014. Sire Ma (馬賽) topped the list due to a year ridden with scandals. Several TVB artistes were heavily searched due to the airing of popular dramas.
1 – Sire Ma
Sire Ma came in first as the most googled Hong Kong celebrity of 2014. In November 2013, a video clip of Sire locking lips with Wang Ziqi (汪子琦) surfaced online, subsequently exposing Sire’s short-lived lesbian love affair with the Mainland businesswoman. In July 2014, an explicit video of Sire dancing in lingerie circulated on the Internet. Sire went through a lot in the past year, and has learned to become much stronger.
2 – Ram Chiang
Ram Chiang’s (蔣志光) supporting performance in Come On, Cousin <老表,你好hea!> earned rave reviews from critics and viewers. The singer-songwriter, who has not produced music in nearly 20 years, did a performance of his original 1990s pop hit “You Needn’t Be Acquaintances to Meet with Each Other” <相逢何必曾相識> with Rita Carpio (韋綺姍) in the series. Ram, who has been in the industry for 30 years, garnered a standing ovation when he won Best Supporting Actor at the 2014 TVB Anniversary Awards.
3 – Coffee Lam
In June 2014, former TVB actress Coffee Lam (林芊妤) was caught having a 30-minute tryst with rich heir Will Lam (林知譽) inside a mall restroom. Following the scandal, Coffee’s past relationships were also exposed, and she was fired by TVB. Coffee’s notoriety shot up after the restroom scandal and she was offered more jobs, including movie roles and event appearances.
4 – G.E.M.
This year was a whirlwind year for G.E.M. (鄧紫棋), who shot to fame in Mainland China after appearing on the second season of singing competition I Am a Singer <我是歌手>. Though G.E.M. ultimately lost to Mainland singer Han Lei (韓磊), her title as first runner-up was enough for G.E.M. to become one of the hottest rising stars in the nation. With fame comes the price of negative press, and rumors of G.E.M.’s disrespectful attitude and arrogance made continuous headlines.
5 & 6 – Roy Chow and Ruby Lau
In September 2014, it was exposed that former Cantopop star Roy Chow (周永恒) had cheated on his wife, singer-actress Yu Chiu (趙頌茹) with model Ruby Lau (劉依靜) for nine months. In addition to his infidelity, Roy was also sentenced to 18 months of probation after attacking his wife, and it was rumored that Roy may be mentally unstable.
7 – Jaycee Chan
Jaycee Chan (房祖名) and Taiwanese actor Kai Ko (柯震東) were arrested by mainland Chinese authorities for drug use in August 2014. The police seized large quantities of marijuana at Jaycee’s residence in Beijing, and more than 120 celebrities were suspected to be involved in the drug scandal. Following his arrest, Jaycee admitted that he has been consuming for the past eight years. Jaycee has been detained by a Beijing detention facility since august.
8 & 9 – Carman Lee and Rachel Lee

Rachel’s last appearance was in the critically-successful 2000 sitcom War of the Genders <男親女愛>.

Candy Yuen (袁嘉敏), best known for her role as Ting Man in the 2011 drama Lives of Omission <潛行狙擊>, became a popular topic in online discussion forums after starring in the Category 3 film Naked Ambition 2 <3D豪情> this year. She was given the title as Hong Kong’s new goddess after showing off her voluptuous figure. Wow, just surprised it’s mainly TvB artist. Just goes to show how popular and TvB is.
Some of the attention are for all the wrong reasons though like Sire Ma and her scandal. I am really happy for Ram finally getting some of the attention he rightfully deserves.
candy yuen is very pretty. i was wondering who she was when i watched lives of omission
Amazing what motivation can do.
Many people find it tedious to google solutions and info, and would rather just post online to ask for easy answers/info when a simple google search would tell them all they need to know.
Amazing what motivation can do.
Hard to believe so many would deliberately google Sire Ma. Sure it’s a scandal; but she’s also not that well-known a celeb nor is the news really that sensational as to warrant such interest.
Is it Sire Ma herself or the LGBT factor in this relationship that gave this extra the extra boost to #1 … and Coffee Lam only to #3?
I thought they use Yahoo more than Google in HK
Hmm most searched on google…I wonder why…hmmmmm
Sire, Coffee, Ram…….stupid names
Totally Agree.
Better to have a simple conventional name, than to try be different by having a really stupid made-up name, which also makes the person look uneducated.
Maybe it’s a cultural thing? I know people tend to have really ‘weird’ (to Western people) English names in Hong Kong just because they can. That’s really no different than American parents naming their kid after some nice sounding French word because of the exotic factor and uniqueness. Not all names have to have a history, a lot of names are made up and were deemed weird at their time too like ‘Wendy’ or ‘Madison’ (didn’t exist as a first name before 1984). And maybe it’s just me but I actually find Sire and Ram quite cool sounding.
If everyone is conventional we wouldn’t have artists or creativity. I’m glad people are diverse and full of differences. How boring a world would we live in if everyone is a Jake or Jennifer?
what about Power, Apple and Twins?
Twins is a group name though, different standards.
Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter is named Apple.
If Noah can name his son Ham, Cheung Chi Kwong can certainly name himself Ram.
agree, HK names are no weirder than celebrity baby names like north west and kal-el
The difference is Gwyneth Paltrow is Caucasian who would naturally use a English name or word. Chinese people in Asia are just aping white people with English names.
Uh, you are talking about two different point.
You said ‘Sire, Coffee, Ram…….stupid names’ (you didn’t say Michelle, Peter, Anna as stupid). So, people reply you base on this point. But, you answer with a totally different point.
‘Sire, Coffee, Ram…….stupid names’
vs
‘ Chinese people in Asia are just aping white people with English names.’
Totally different point.
It’s like you said ‘orange’ is yucky. When people reply than this and that orange is not yucky. You answer with ‘the difference is apple taste good’.
Ram can be short for Ramses and sounds badass either way
It’s also the opinion of some Japanese that Asians (in Asia)- except the Chinese- seem to have more pride in their ethnic identity. The majority keep their ethnic names unlike Chinese in HK, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and now China.
It their english name
Well, Apple is strange regardless of race.
I actually knew of 3 Apples.
One was from elementary/primary school(didn’t actually know her, just kept seeing her name on the sports day line up of runners), another was an Apple – child of ESL China mom, and 3rd is a HKger Apple (also ESL).
April is ok, so is May.
But Apple is just weird, like Peach.
Madison is cool.
So is Raven – like Daniel Wu and Lisa S’s baby. It sounds First Nations actually – they tend to people after nature (River etc). I knew a Melody.
Peach… Peaches. I would immediately think of the movie Ice Age.
Name after fruits is weird, but, name after animals and nature is not.
Looks like it all boils down to individual preference.
But then you’re projecting your own feelings into it? I know an Apple too (both parents Canadian) and I don’t find that weirder than naming your child after a stone.. like Ruby or Crystal.
According to science, people tend to dislike creativity (even if they claim otherwise) or things that are uncommon so I understand finding names like that weird but I don’t think you should judge wether the name is ‘good’ or not.
Some name are weird, even for the westerner that speaks English, doesn’t make them look smart by simply pluck an object and use it as their name. I find it weird that there are ppl named with country, America, India, China.
As for Chinese (China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore), they put an English name according to their Chinese character name, which may seems weird but it makes a lot more sense than westerner naming their kids America or Apple.
Celebrity name that gives good example are Evergreen Mak, Panda Xiong and Fish Leong, and many more others. I was working in a company with a lot of colleagues from China and I get a lot of Brave, Dragon, Beauty, Rainbow, Lightning and the best if Horsepower Li.
But i have to agree, Coffee is kinda stupid
Calling someone uneducated because of their name is being uneducated yourself. I personally think the reason artists named themselves different names because they want to be unique. Ram and Sire are pretty cool names
