Roger Kwok Teaches His Children Money Management
Three-time TV King Roger Kwok (郭晉安) has much to celebrate this Lunar New Year. Many of his friends, keen to share some of his good fortune, asked Roger out for meals, resulting in a very festive period. Roger wishes to share his good fortune with people beyond his immediate social circle, “Many organizations have invited me to their events. I click very well with old people and I’m always glad to brighten up their day!”
Roger added that he is a man of tradition. Every Lunar New Year, in addition to the usual reunion dinner with his family, he would always bring them to the Victoria Park flower markets. He explained, “When I was a child, I lived near Victoria Park and my family used to walk around the flower markets. We didn’t necessarily have to buy anything– just soaking in the festive atmosphere brought us lots of joy. I want my children to enjoy the same experience, and the same simple joys in life that don’t always come with toys.”
For the holidays, Roger often goes on vacation with his family. This year, they will visit a country in Southeast Asia.
Teaches Children About Money
Roger also tried to use Lunar New Year red packets to teach his 6-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter about basic money management concepts. His children’s red packet money would be put into a savings account.
Roger’s son once asked why he could not use the red packet money to buy gifts for himself. In response, Roger asked his son if he knew how much the family vacation cost. After deducting the red packet money, his son still owed Roger money. Roger’s son then understood and stopped asking to use the money for toys.
As money loses value over time, Roger also taught that it was better to invest the money in gold, which rarely loses value. Roger admits that his children may not fully understand the concepts, but hopes they will remember the information one day.
