Roger Kwok is the Ideal Family Man

Roger Kwok (郭晉安) finally stripped away his “Ah Wong” image when he won Best Actor for Black Heart White Soul <忠奸人> at last year’s TVB Anniversary Awards. With this win, Roger is now tied with Gallen Lo (羅嘉良) and Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) for winning the Best Actor three times in Hong Kong television history.

Although his career has reached yet another peak, Roger is surprisingly low key and mellow about his third Best Actor win. He cut down jobs to spend more time with his family and wife, Cindy Au (歐倩怡). The acclaimed actor actually enjoys spending time at home, opting to do house chores rather than going out.

“Unless it’s for work, Roger would almost always stay at home,” said Cindy. “Sometimes he would also take me to gatherings with the drama crew.”

Roger’s mellow personality is a perfect match for Cindy’s more outgoing one, and it does not come to a surprise at all to know that the couple have been together for over 14 years. Cindy said, “Roger is a rather romantic person. He likes to have flowers in the house, decorate the rooms, and would even sew back the buttons on my shirts if they popped out! He’s really good at it!” In contrast to Roger’s more delicate personality, Cindy called herself a tomboy – outgoing and rough. She enjoys staying outdoors and likes to take numerous classes for further enrichment.

Though Cindy insisted that Roger is a romantic, Roger said he is not good at giving gifts, especially flowers. He explained, “We have plenty of flowers at home, but I rarely give flowers as gifts. Cindy is a practical person.” Even so, Cindy said Roger would still surprise her occasionally with gifts when she least expects it, sharing that her husband once hid her gift under the blanket of their bed.

“I’m not romantic,” Cindy laughed. “The most romantic thing I did is cooking a meal for him.”

Roger Takes Care of Cindy’s Parents

What touched Cindy the most about Roger is not his surprises, but his thoughtfulness and love for his family. She shared one unforgettable incident, “My parents always lived in a rented apartment. Because my mother was a medical professional, I grew up in Mong Kok. When they retired, they continued to rent apartments. Roger always took care of their rent after we got married. Since they’re getting older, it’s stressful to see them moving all the time. That’s why Roger decided to buy a flat [at $1 million HKD] for them. He handled the purchase, renovations, and furnishings. He also knew that my mother wanted to help take care of my niece, so he bought an apartment close to where my sister lived.”

Roger took Cindy’s parents to their new home after eating brunch one day, surprising the in-laws. Cindy said her parents were so happy their faces turned red. “It was so touching. It’s so hard to find someone like that!”

Roger is family-oriented, and no matter how busy his schedule is, he would always find time to take his wife, children, and in-laws on a big trip once a year. “This is something that we all find important,” said Roger. “We usually go somewhere with sunny beaches, just anywhere where we can truly relax.”

    1. I find a man who buys a house for my parents when they needed it the most is the sexiest and most romantic thing a man can ever do for me. More than buying me a diamond ring. Roger is a quiet unassuming man and he has relaxed over the years and i believe his wife is part of the reason.

      1. Totally agree. A husband who is so kind towards his in-laws is hard to find. Roger is quite the dream man!

      2. Actually, anything that is thoughtful (and is observed as needed by the recipient) is considerate and “romantic”
        Because it is sincere.

It could be a house, it could be something small but it’s something observantly thoughtful – that is the “sexiness” to me.

Those tycoons give houses all the time to their gfs, mistresses and their families (normally houses that are needed too) = that’s so NOT sexy!

    2. daughter is going to be a very pretty young lady.

    1. San,
Thanks for sharing the video clips. Both were super cute. I found it amusing how Roger’s son kept eating throughout the entire second clip while Roger interviewed him.

  11. Thank you San for all the video clips about Roger and his family. The children are super cute.

Everyone looks cute in the picture above.

  12. I wish every man would treat their in-laws like Roger.

I wonder who are Roger’s parents? How does Roger treat his parents? His parents have done an excellent job to raise him up and teach him to be a responsible, compassionate, and wonderful man!

    1. I heard that Roger’s parents passed away. But from what I know,Roger come from a big family with 9 kids and his father sacrificed and worked hard to raise them all. His father is truly a great man. Heard that he grew up during very hard times that they had to use rice to make porridge instead of rice in order to have enough to eat. There was one point that his father was deaf and was not in the greatest health when he won an award I think. Everyone asked if his parents knew and were proud of him,but he just said that as long they were healthy that was all that mattered to him. He also mentioned how each of his siblings and him would take turns accompanying his parents so they were not lonely. Therefore, that shows his parents are great and selfless people and what a good son he is to them. However, they sadly passed away so I guess he is trying to show that love his in laws as much as he can since his parents are no longer around.

    1. Why don’t you compare him to Aaron Kwok or Raymond Cho or Wayne Lai who are even closer to his age?

      1. He’s aging imo – there were a couple of pictures the other day that were indicative.

Aaron is perpectually youthful, because he only has to care about himself (and his cars).

  13. He ages really well, doesn’t look like a 50-year-old man 🙂

  14. If my husband bought my parents a flat near one of my siblings or myself, i would give him an over the top review too.

It’s extremely hard to find such a man who are considered and family oriented, so when you do find him, hold on to him as he’s a rare breed.

    1. It’s not really the fact he bought a house (could be anything) … but the whole thoughtfulness and willingness behind the considerate gesture.

Even if he took her parents out every wk to some event, or a meal and because he WANTED to/and was NOT obligated to (essential difference) = that to me is sweet too.

  15. Isn’t EVERYONE suppose to work hard to save up for their own retirement so that they can “hire” people to take care of them? Many “considerate” seniors who “love” their child(ren) do this nowadays because they don’t want to “burden” their child(ren) or anyone else.

  16. Ahhh this is so sweet… love roger and his family!!!
