Elaine Ng’s Daughter Returns Home
After Elaine Ng (吳綺莉) was arrested for physically abusing her 15-year-old daughter Etta Ng (吳卓林), the pair was separated for three weeks during police investigations. Etta has moved back into Elaine’s house, and the mother and daughter’s relationship has been restored.
During police investigations, Etta lived with her godmother. Etta apologized for causing her mother headache. After Etta had shared suicidal thoughts and troubles at home with a teacher, the school alerted police of suspected child abuse.
Due to the pressure of being a single mother, Elaine fell into alcoholism and often lashed out at Etta. Regretting her past behavior, Elaine promised to drink less and win back her daughter’s trust.
In early April, Etta finally returned to live with Elaine in Tai Po. Although happy that they are finally reunited, Elaine admits she still has much to learn in improving her communications with Etta. “We’ll have to take things slow. I’m still learning how to do so. Learning is really a life-long process.”
Elaine said it is necessary to reflect on her behavior every day, to avoid repeating her past mistakes. Although she promised Etta to reduce alcohol consumption, Elaine asked her daughter not to monitor her every move and make her feel uncomfortable. Elaine said, “We have mutual trust in each other. I told her, ‘You keep an eye on me and I’ll keep an eye on you.”
While Etta has returned home, it is unclear whether child abuse charges have been dropped. Elaine said her lawyer is handling the case and declined to comment on further details.
