Lin Yun: The New Star in Stephen Chow’s “The Mermaid”
Lin Yun (林允) beat more than 100,000 hopefuls in auditions to land a leading role in Stephen Chow‘s (周星馳) upcoming film, The Mermaid <美人魚>. Hailing from Huzhou in Zhejiang province, the 20-year-old actress revealed that she had nearly suffered disfigurement on the filming set.
Lin Yun recounted how after meeting Stephen, she thought of Stephen as someone who took his work very seriously. She said, “Before I met him, I thought he was someone who liked to joke around. But after meeting him, I realized that he had a very strict work ethic.”
Yun added that, however, Stephen has never shouted at her and would often watch out for her. She explained, “Whatever expression he wants from me, he will demonstrate for me. He’s been very kind to me.”
Playing the role of a mermaid, Yun often had to put on the safety harness when filming her underwater scenes. As she was not used to it, she often incurred injuries all over her body, and on one occasion, Yun nearly became disfigured. She recalled, “It’s normal to get injured from wearing the safety harness. One day, one of the actors was meant to descend into the water from above me. I accidentally knocked my head [against the actor] and fell face-first. It felt as if a football had hit my head. My nose was swollen and bruised. Thankfully, all I needed was a trip to the hospital. It was nothing to worry about. I didn’t take a break from filming, as I didn’t suffer any serious injury or break any bones!”
