Catching Up With Louise Lee’s Retired Life In Zhongshan

Hong Kong veteran actress Louise Lee (李司棋) ended her 40-year relationship with TVB when she decided to not extend her contract after shooting the comedy drama Romantic Repertoire <水髮胭脂> in 2014. The 65-year-old has since left Hong Kong to retire in the Chinese city of Zhongshan, northwest of Hong Kong.

According to various reports, Louise’s decision to end her TVB contract was due to health. The long filming hours took a toll on her health; she also had a history of cervical cancer, and the strenuous filming hours may lead to a relapse.

Though Louise has retired from acting, she would occasionally make an appearance on an i-Cable food program. When she was not working, she would return to her home in Zhongshan to live a much more slow-placed and comfortable retired life.

The Hong Kong paparazzi followed Louise all the way to Zhongshan, and saw that Louise is currently living comfortably in a four-story luxury villa, surrounded by a large garden. She would occasionally leave her home to visit a Chinese medicine clinic in the city, where she would receive a tuina — a type of acupressure treatment. Louise appears to be a regular visitor, as she is very close to the clinic’s staff.

Louise joined the entertainment industry after graduating from the artist training course provided by the now-defunct Rediffusion Television in 1968. She was then transferred to TVB under the recommendation of TVB producer Robert Chua (蔡和平), and worked behind-the-scenes for the TVB comedy show Enjoy Yourself Tonight <歡樂今宵>. She left TVB a year later for the movie industry, but returned to TVB in 1971 and starred in numerous classic television dramas. Together with Liza Wang (汪明荃), Gigi Wong (黃淑儀), and Angie Chiu (趙雅芝), Louise was considered as one of the hottest fadans of the late 70’s and early 80s.

Over the last few decades, Louise has worked for several broadcasters in Hong Kong and overseas. When she returned to TVB in 2007 to film Heart of Greed <溏心風暴>, her popularity skyrocketed once again, and she won Best Actress at the TVB Anniversary Awards for her role. The drama’s sister production, Moonlight Resonance <溏心風暴之家好月圓>, was a even larger success, breaking viewership ratings records.

  1. I am surprised she hasn’t moved to Canada to be closer to her only daughter. Moving to a new place must be difficult since she has spent most of her life in Hong Kong. I wish her well.

    1. @afan202 Not too surprised actually, since Louise hasn’t retired completely and still works in HK (in addition to the i-Cable show, she’s also got a few stage plays she participates in) — much easier to travel to HK from China than from Canada.

This article is actually quite poorly written — typical ‘gossip’ fare that reminds us once again why so many HK celebrities hate the city’s paparazzi culture (no surprise of course, since the article is from East Week, which ranks up there with Next Media in terms of unscrupulous gossip rags). There’s actually an interview that Louise did a few weeks back in which she talks in detail about what she has been up to since leaving TVB and also clarifying the reason(s) why she left. THAT article is a much more worthwhile read for those who are interested in knowing how Louise is doing currently (and knowing the challenges she faced working at TVB the past few years) — better than the above article, which is more from the perspective of the paps who followed Louise around rather than from her own words.
