Deric Wan: “Why Did I Not Marry Maggie Shiu?”

Recently, famous Hong Kong film, television, music talent, Deric Wan (温兆伦) appeared as a guest on major television talk show, Looked and Looked <看了又看>.   Deric revealed the inside details of how he became famous as well as the true personalities behind past co-stars, Maggie Shiu (邵美琪), Kathy Chow (周海媚), and Irene Wan (温碧霞)! In the interview, Deric even raised and answered the question of “Why did I not marry Maggie?” The contents of Deric’s interview were quite compelling!

Obedience Led to Breakthrough Performance

Debuting as a singer, Deric’s career was tepid until starring in 1989’s Looking Back in Anger <义不容情> as the well-known villain, Ding Yau Hong. Since Deric [did not take formal acting classes], Deric was concerned that he would be unable to deliver a competent performance after receiving the role in Looking Back in Anger. Regarding Deric’s concern, Producer Wai Ka Fai (韦家辉) said bluntly, “As long as you are obedient, you will be fine. You have to do what the director, scriptwriter, and I tell you to do. If we ask you to blink your eyes three times, do not blink four times!”

Since Deric was super-obedient on the filming set of Looking Back in Anger, this led to good results in his performance. After the broadcast of Looking Back in Anger, the audience reacted strongly and Deric became a leading man at TVB. Since the outset of his career and to-date, Deric continued to be a very”obedient” actor.

Considered as a veteran, Deric collaborated with numerous TVB actresses, including Irene Wan, Kathy Chow, and Maggie Shiu. The program host imitated Irene’s soft voice, leading to laughter on the set. On the other hand, Maggie and Kathy possessed tomboyish personalities. Asked which actress he was most comfortable acting with, Deric admitted that he was most comfortable with Maggie Shiu. The pair shared a good understanding and will understand each other’s thoughts with one glance.

Deric revealed that Maggie Shiu possessed a great appetite. Despite her feminine appearance, her true personality was very tomboyish. In the past, many viewers asked why Deric did not marry Maggie Shiu. Deric raised the same question in the talk show and answered by stating that they collaborated too many times and became “brothers.”

In the television program, Deric performed a duet with Maggie Zhong (钟纯妍), entitled One Person’s Love <一个人的恋爱>. For this single release, Deric was involved in the image and graphic design, as well as the creative planning of the music video.  Deric also wrote the lyrics and completed the music production. Deric and Maggie performed their duet with deep feeling together.

Getting Married for the Third Time?

Focusing his career in mainland China in recent years, Deric maintained a low-profile romantic life since breaking up with TVB artist, Sonija Kwok (郭羨妮). Deric currently focused on acting and behind-the-scenes development. Several days ago, he attended a promotional event in mainland China and reports surfaced that he got married for the third time. Allegedly, Deric stated that he wanted to have a baby girl and was interested in naming her “Gentle Beauty” (温柔美) which bore the same name as his new song title.

The identity of “Mrs. Wan” was a mystery as Deric refused to disclose who the woman was. This naturally sparked much speculation,  even embroiling Deric’s recent mainland partners, Zhao Ting (赵庭) and Maggie Zhong in the romantic rumors. Due to their new duet, One Person’s  Love, Deric and Maggie often performed at events together.  Maggie often posted their photos together online, with Deric responding to her messages thus leading to speculation that Maggie was “Mrs. Wan.” At the same time, Deric left a message on Zhao Ting’s blog, “Your idol loves you,” which gave rise to speculation as well.

Mysterious About Love

When the reporter called yesterday, Deric pretended to be mysterious about his alleged marriage. Deric said: “Marriage is my ultimate goal. Having a baby a girl is a little more urgent, which I am looking forward to. This is my dream; however everything needs to be confirmed.” (Is Zhao Ting Mrs. Wan?) “Of course not! Many people write in such a manner on blogs.” (Is Maggie Zhong Mrs. Wan?) “No, of course not!”

It was understood that Deric possessed a very good relationship with his mainland girlfriend, however the couple did not get married yet.

Jayne: Deric Wan was my favorite actor from the 1990s! I grazed his hand in a concert once. A very handsome man in a suit! 🙂

It’s nice to hear him talk about Maggie, Kathy, and Irene. Personally, I think Deric prefers women with feminine exteriors, perhaps Irene Wan’s type rather the the strong exterior of Maggie Shiu.

  1. Deric was also one of my favourite idol in the 90s. His acting as villain and goody roles were all very convincing plus interesting.

I notice that there are many and many hk male artist marrying mainland barbie dolls, probably mainland dolls are way more obedient than local one? No wonder Sonija, Nyadia, Ada etc holds tight to their men and willing to give their career for these men..I guess it’s hard for hk female artists who are over 35 to find a decent husband?

  2. Liked his acting a lot in the old TVB series. Wish he is back. Maggie is really pretty in her younger years and still attractive now.

  3. Still remember his acting in the breaking point, vengeance, on the edge, conscience n so on. He n gallen lo were very famous on those day. I wish they make come back… Wonder why …no actros as good as them nowadays.? * also miss kenix, Ada choi, Jessica hsuan, flora chan…

    1. I thought that I was the only one that thought that Sammul and Deric looked a like. No wonder whenever I saw Sammul I kept on wondering who he reminded me of.. THen I finally remembered, Deric…

      1. When Sammul was younger, he did have a resemblance to Eric. But, now, they don’t look alike anymore. I personally think Deric has resemblance with Donnie Yan.

  5. Me too. I really loved Deric in “Looking Back in Anger” and “The Breaking Point” as he played evil villainous roles in both dramas. He is definitely one of my favourite actors whether he plays the good guy or bad. I found it strange seeing him with Dicky Cheung in that sort of comedy drama. Don’t know the English translation but in Cantonese its called “Lo Yau Kwai Kwai” – something like very good friends. Dicky dies and plays a ghost and Deric ends up with his girlfriend. It was funny seeing Deric with short hair, wearing casual clothes driving a taxi as he played a taxi driver with shorts and not the usual sophisticated suave man about time. Hope to see more of him in future.

    1. Pineapple,
My favorite Deric Wan role is “Blood of Good and Evil.” As Deric implied, his villain role was written so evily in “Looking Back in Anger” that all he had to do was follow the director’s directions. Deric was good in “Looking Back in Anger,” but his acting chops come through more in “Blood of Good and Evil.” I disliked his role in “The Breaking Point” because it was not written well and did many petty things against Leon Lai.

In “Vengenance” and “Golden Faith,” Gallen’s characters had more to do.

      1. Another good series of Deric is ‘Conscience’ where he played an autistic guy.

As for ‘Vengeance’, if the character is not played by Deric, he will be a supporting character. He really doesn’t have much to do in ‘Vengeance’.

  6. However messy his private life may be, Deric Wan is an exceptional actor, whether comedy, drama, everything. I wish he is back with TVB, I really miss him. Wouldn’t it be great if he were to team up with Felix and Maggie again? He and Maggie was the dream team.

  7. Deric is one of my favorite artiste from the 90s. Too bad that he is concentrating his career in the China market nowadays. It will be nice to have him back to film a series for TVB, but likely TVB won’t be paying him as much as the China film companies do.

    1. Lynn11,
Deric is a principled person. In his last return to TVB, he was given very low-budget series such as “Vigilante Mask.” He was not cast in challenging roles utilizing his real talent in TVB in his last return there..Don’t think Deric will return to TVB as long as he has good career prospects in China.

As long as “Wan Sir” is happy…I was very excited to see his news pop up in recent days.

  8. He was really good in Misleading Track with Louisa So. Can’t remember the ending – anyone help me here please. Was he really her husband and trying to kill her or something or was he someone who looked like her husband. I think he married Cindy Au (Roger Kwok’s real life wife) in the series – maybe because of money or something.

    1. I don’t remember the ending either. But, I remember that Deric really is Louisa So’s husband. I remember he killed newly found long lost twin brother and took his place and he blamed the murder on Louisa.

    2. I love this series too and I happen to just recently re-watched it with my sisters. Deric’s ending: he was in the hospital in the U.S. because he thought his son had cancer, but it really was Bowie’s trap to make him surrender to the police. When he realized he was tricked, he took his son hostage, but at the end, he let his son go and was captured. He was sent to prison for how many years, it wasn’t mentioned.

Misleading Track was a good and suspenseful series. 🙂 The fact that it’s not draggy and written so smoothly is something TVB is incapable of doing today.

  9. I love Deric in many of the TVB series from the 90s as well. I think he is acting in China now and I really enjoy watching him in China productions as well.Maybe he can come back for a TVB series sometime?? That would be great… He is a great singer as well and love hearing him sing those themesongs…

  10. It would have been great if he and Maggie were married in real life. They would have been another on screen and real life couple. That doesn’t happen often but it is great when it does.

  11. Thanks Kidd and Christelle for telling me the ending. There is nothing worse than knowing half the series and can’t remember the rest.

HeTieShou: I also love his songs very much and have some of the old tapes and one cd. He has a great voice. With regards to him and Maggie Siu – that would be absolutely heaven for me as I like her a lot also. They really seemed to go well together in “Looking Back In Anger” and the other ones, i.e. “Blood of good and evil” and there was a third; can’t remember the name. He was a slow witted person at first and she was a, was it reporter or news editor, something like that. They fell in love but in the end I think he married Amy Kwok (real life wife of Lau Ching Wan). Strangely enough I wasn’t a real lover of that series but because I liked those two so much it made the whole thing worth watching for me. Oh there was Ng Wai Kwok in it also.

Anyway, whatever, I really wish that he would return to TVB to do some more.

Le: I didn’t know he was married twice as he seems to like keeping his privacy as you don’t hear much scandal about him, apart from going out with Sonija Kwok for a while.

    1. That series with him as a slow person is Conscience.

This series has a very well written protagonist (Maggie Siu) imo. Her road to the bad path is understandable.

    2. @pineapple:

Deric definitely had his share of scandal. He dated this “small role” tvb actress that was either named strawberry or played a character named that. After they broke up, she said he demanded she pay him money back for something. Anyway, his image plummeted. I remember he was in some series w/ Jessica hsuan and Lawrence ng that let the audience call in to guess the mystery. But instead, the si lai would call in to scold him as a louse, not a man lai ga.

I think the second time he was banished f/ hk was over the sonija breakup.

      1. Necklace related incident if I remember correctly, the actress was… can;t remember her name…

    3. Pineapple,
Yea, Deric does have a great voice and I hope that he will sing again one day. I only saw Looking Back in ANger recently since back in the days, I rarely watched any modern series. I only saw the really classic ones like Yesterday’s Glitter, The Bund, The Shell Game,etc.. since I only liked ancient series. I still highly prefer ancient over modern series but am more open to watching modern series now.
Therefore, I don’t even know which series you are referring to since I wasn’t into modern series back then. The first time that I ever saw Deric was in The Commandments with Vivian Chow and gosh was he funny and cute…

I hope that he can come back to TVB one day as well. However, I can still see him a lot because I watch mainland China series. You should if you want to see him act since a lot of them are really good…

      1. ‘Looking Back In Anger’ gave Deric the fame, but, his defining work is ‘Blood of Good and Evil’. That’s the series that push him to great popularity and make him and Maggie a golden couple.

He even use the name penname ‘Hou Nam’ when he composes and wrote lyrics for his songs. From the lyrics he penned (his old songs), I felt that his view on love is quite pessimistic. Most of the lyrics he penned are sad love songs. I don’t know how his view are now after 2 marriages. Those lyrics he penned was before his first marriage.

      2. There was a time Hou Nam was a popular name for boys, I suppose due to this series.

  12. I honestly didn’t know that he had his fair share of scandals. its only recently I found this site that I am beginning to follow the celebrities news and gossips. Since I can’t read Chinese its difficult I can’t even buy Chinese mags; hence didn’t know much of their past. I did read somewhere however that after he made Looking Back In Anger, some of the older women called him names in the streets and was rude to him. Strange how people can get so “worked up” about a character on screen. Afterall the poor man was only doing his job by his acting. I think the better the villain, the more convincing they are. If he wasn’t that good the public would not have hated his character as much. Afterall, how many people in the world would actually kill the woman who brought you up – not many for sure!!

    1. is it really a big deal if he ask his ex to give him back the necklace and/or other expensive stuff he bought her?

      1. Just makes him seem cheap and petty. Ruined his gentleman image.

    2. Yea, it is hard when you can’t read Chinese. But there are a lot of old newspapers back then that translated into other languages as well(not English though) if you couldn’t read Chinese. I was looking through my old magazines last night and found so many old news of my favorites. It is great to have them to read and keep for sweet old memories sake.

Deric did have his fair share of scandals, but most of his ex wives/lovers were not from the circle. I remember that he liked this one actress(I don’t remember her name) while acting in China but she left him after dating for a short time.

  13. What’s this necklace thing about – I’m intrigued now???

  14. Kidd: Thanks, so it was Conscience. I thought that Maggie looked a bit haggard and thinner in the face but I did like the actress who played her mother. Think she was a famous star in her day and called Mui Kam Fung.
