Rosina Lam Brings Animated Blockbuster “Monkey King: Hero is Back” to Hong Kong
TVB actress Rosina Lam (林夏薇) has invested in a seven-figure sum to bring last year’s animated hit, Monkey King: Hero is Back <西遊記之大聖歸來>, to theaters in Hong Kong and Macau. The movie about the legendary Monkey King, released in 2015, was China’s highest-grossing animated film of all-time before it was defeated by Disney’s Zootopia earlier this year.
On Sunday, Rosina attended a screening event for the movie with her Short End of the Stick <公公出宮> costar, Wayne Lai (黎耀祥). Wayne stars in the film as the Cantonese voice of Sun Wukong (Monkey King), while Rosina plays a young monk.
Monkey King: Hero is Back is Rosina’s voice acting debut. She did her part after hearing Wayne’s recordings in the studio. “After hearing [Wayne’s] work I immediately went home to study the film,” she said. “I wanted to get into my character as soon as possible.” Asking if she plans too invest in more movies in the future, Rosina said, “I’ll see how this goes. I invested a 7-figure sum for this film. I don’t consider myself an investment tycoon, but I hope everyone will support Chinese animation.”
Many families and children attended yesterday’s screening event. Reporters asked the 29-year-old Rosina, who married businessman Jason Mok (莫贊生) last year, if she plans to have kids of her own in the future. She said, “I was never against having children, but I don’t have time at the moment.”
Monkey King: Hero is Back is Wayne’s fourth time participating in a Journey to the West-related project. He had previously starred in TVB’s version of the classical story in 1996, starring as Zhu Bajie alongside Dicky Cheung’s (張衛健) Sun Wukong and Kwong Wa’s (江華) as Tang Sanzang.
“I’m doing Sun Wukong’s voice this time,” said Wayne. “He’s very different from Zhu Bajie. Sun Wukong is not as ‘hea’ [lazy]. I’ve done two Journey to the West dramas, and made a guest appearance in one film. Along with this animation, it would be my fourth one. But my roles are different each time.” (How was Rosina’s voice acting?) “She did really well. Her voice suits the role a lot.”
