Ron Ng’s Poor English in “Triumph in the Skies 2”
While Triumph in the Skies 2 <衝上雲霄II> had an impressive first week in terms of ratings, netizens pointed out that there were many bloopers and errors in some of the scenes. Most specifically, some of the flying terminologies were used incorrectly as well as piloting actions and gestures were inaccurate. Ron Ng (吳卓羲), who attended a promotion event for Triumph in the Skies 2, clarified, “The producer was scared that errors like these would occur so we had a professional pilot as an advisor. He would oversee my script before I started filming. Pilots have different styles so maybe that’s why the audience members were confused.”
Errors aside, Ron’s English was also subject to ridicule, particularly in episode 3 where he jokingly declared his love for Jayden (Chilam Cheung 張智霖). When he was filming for Triumph in the Skies, Ron’s role required him to speak quite a bit of English. While his accent was horrid back then, ten years has not improved his English speaking abilities.
Ron laughed it off at the Triumph in the Skies 2 promotional event yesterday. Ron said there was inadequate time to memorize the lines properly. “It can’t be helped. The actors learn [the new terms] on set. Sometimes there are last-minute revisions to the script and there are changes even after we memorized the lines. We tried our best!”
Another error was when the filming crew’s reflection was shown in Myolie Wu’s (胡杏兒) sunglasses. This was not the first time viewers have found numerous errors in a drama but Ron defended the production team by saying that it is challenging to get the perfect filming angle.

yeah i hav no idea what they were saying. he was like “go nor” n i was like what go nor? xD i realized it was “go north” cant be blame, they are england accent. not american accent. i dont think are that bad. but definitely room for improvements!
All of their English abilities are bad, including Fala’s and Myolie’s. Their tones and stresses are all wrong. It’s rather embarrassing, and incredibly pretentious. I’m sure the series will be just as good with an all-Cantonese script, so why try to force English into the script at all, especially when it sounds so awkward?
for a more realistic portrayal perhaps? english is an universal language. pilots should be using english for communication.

WOW, I am shocked that Kenneth’s English is not good even after studying in Canada for so many years. I guess he just stayed within a Chinese community or something so rarely spoke any English.
In Ron’s case, I don’t think he ever studied abroad so his case is more understandable if he had bad English.
Yea, you’re right. He attended UBC Engineering.. and everyone in UBC Engineering is literally Chinese.. and Vancouver has a high population of Chinese people LOL, which is probably why his English is quite poor :/

As a professional actor, that shouldn’t be too hard. Any 10 year old in HK can do it better.
But I actually don’t mind their English, because that’s one of the most funny things to watch hahaha.

I was watching CNN interviews on Ang Lee or whoever one time n stumbled upon him on one of those CNN interviews. I was surprinsingly impressed hahaha… TL can actually speaks it fairly well and explained his ideas and answers w/very profound and interesting terms. I was like whoooo, when did this quite dude learn to express so well? hahaha LOL

YES, I was sooo impressed with Tony Leung’s English. He is really good… I have heard Andy Lau speak it and it is ok, but not as good as Tony.
I don’t know about you people but learning a new language takes time. It doesn’t just come out when you want it to. Even learning a few sentence take quite a bit of time. And some people just ain’t good with languages
I know because I teach English and have learned French for years so I know how it is… Learning any language takes a lot of time, patience, effort, dedication,etc…. Some are better than others and it just varies depending on the individual, their environment and so many other factors. It is very complicated…
I don’t know why the blame falls on Ron when Francis’ english is pretty bad too. It’s not like I really care about the few lines of english they have to speak though. I care more if the story is good.

This is a HK drama based on characters who are HK residents. I don’t understand why TVB (or even HK people) think that speaking a lot of English will make them seem more “intelligent.”

I guess it’s a belief from the old times, when only the rich and/or educated could speak english. Certainly this belief don’t hold true anymore as even beggars now can write/speak english in order to communicate with foreign visitors, LOL
It does make sense for them to speak english as I suppose a majority of the course material is written in english, english speaking instructors, communication abroad etc.

I think pilots and flight attendants should be able to speak relatively good English. How else can they communicate when they fly to so many countries?
However, in reality many does not have very good pronunciation so Ron/Kenneth/Francis’ English is not entirely unbelievable. And finally, at the of the day they are just actors acting in a show about pilots. It might be a minor distraction, but it hardly takes you out of the scenes so it’s not that big of a deal.
Well Ron lives in HK where they hardly speak English anyways, so how and why would he want to improve it??? I think if Ron knew it was a requirement to, he would have done so.

It is impossible for Chinese people speak English naturally as Americans. The professional pilots should not be too serious about the accuracy because this series just is for entertaining .

i think he/she just meant we as asians cant never speak english as an american. Its not an insult or anything its just the fact cause we do speak a second language mandarin/chinese/vietnamese/korean whatever it is at home with our parents or other relatives so no matter how perfect our english are, it is still different from caucasians. Even you can speak with american accent its still different from a white person. I dont think it is a bad thing. We are asians so it is what it is.
LOL…I disagree…it’s not entirely impossible…the more accurate thing to say is that it depends on the person and their background. Most of my friends (as well as myself) were born overseas (in HK or Taiwan) but grew up in the U.S. yet when you hear us speak English, you can’t tell we’re Asian. I remember someone at work was shocked when I said something in Chinese because she always heard me speak English with no accent and thought I was born here.
I truly feel that if you have the desire and passion to learn a language, you’ll be able to get good at it. English was actually my first language while Cantonese and Mandarin were my second and third, yet I’m fluent in all three….so it’s really not impossible at all (whether it’s learning English or learning Chinese).
good for you!!!! My cousins and me were born in the us grew up in all different areas in the us and for some you can tell we are asians, only a few kinda cant tell asians or white.
IF you are Chinese American/Asian American then of course you would be able to speak English naturally. I speak English, Chinese(mandarin) and Vietnamese naturally, but I am Asian looking so sadly I face a lot of the stereotypes that ONLY white looking people can speak English well which is NOT necessarily true at all…

Disagree. There are many asians who were born and raised in western countries that don’t speak english naturally. There is such a thing called china town, especially in San Francisco.
Oh yea, that is true…. Sadly there are some that refuse to integrate with foreigners and just stay in their little shell… I guess since in my family, a lot of siblings and cousins were either born in the US or came here at a young age all know mostly only English that they nearly forgot their native language. I am one of the few that kept up with all of my languages that I know.

Isn’t Kenneth Ma a Canadian? If so, his English shouldn’t be bad. Most native English speakers aren’t able to speak proper English anyways, never mind Hong Kong people.
Did you watch the scene where he was asking for Fala for the arsenal shirt? He spoke with a pretty bad accent.
I have not watched this series or the first one so I have no idea of how they spoke. I usually poke fun at their English anyway. There is a rare few that can speak fluent enough English for me to understand. For the most part, I wished they would not use English and use Chinese as it sounds horrible when they do use English (although some actors have ‘lan yum’ (lazy prononucations) so it sounds horrible too).

It really depends on each person’s motivation and how much they want to intergrate into the community of their target language. It is not necessarily the amount of time that spend in any particular country. I still remember Ms. Hk 1987, Pauline Yeung, she studied in England for only 2 years but spoke English really well. Therefore, it just depends on each individual. You can spend 30+ years in the country of your target and know nothing if you refuse to try to learn the particular language.
Agree. It also depends on whether you mix and communicate with local people or you hang around with Hongkong Chinese only. I know some people who have lived in Toronto for over 30 years and still cannot communicate in English. Sad!

couldn’t agree w/u more. some ppl are born in the u.s.a but they live in chinatown or asian flooded areas and no communicating w/ppl even if they r abcs, they are not much better than ppl who immigrated in their teens. but i see some ppl who came at a very late age after their teens or even 6 years in a foreign land n yet they can speak like a native. i was mentioning TONY LEUNG in another article that i was very impressed and very surprised to learned he was speaking all english understandbly well in a CNN interview. he not only replied but w/very meaningful terms and i think thats great since he is a HKer thru n thru. it really depends on how an individual is willing to learn the language.
It really depends on the person… You can study or live in a country for many years and know nothing if you refuse to learn and integrate yourself into the community of the target language.
Ron Ng’s english was not that bad considering that English is not his native language. Besides that, the flight attendant’s English were not up to par as well! Besides Nancy and Eliza, there were a couple of ke le fe’s English that were horrible too! Such terms like “Please put on your seatbelt” were so simple, yet sounds like Solar’s language requirements are pretty low…
Well there was an incident a while back where Ron and Bernice was attending a function for a brand name watch (I believe it was Tag Heuer?). Bernice is really fluent with English and was mingling with the event’s bigwigs who happens to be Caucasian. While Ron had a hard time trying to fit in because of his lack of English skills. Anyway, story is Ron was asked about his thoughts about the brand name watch and Ron Blurted out ‘MA FAY FUT’ instead of ‘my favorite’. Reporters has since been poking at Ron’s English skills and netizens who’s read the article has mocked him ever since. This article just proves the reporters hasn’t let go out of that incident.

Seriously, Ron isn’t the worse. I did some checks, and Kenneth suppose to know more English, and I do not know if it’s on purpose, but the scene where he tried to talk to Fala was horrible. Ron speak slowly while he fly the plane and it’s understandable. He only finish form 3 education too. You cannot blame him completely. TVB is known to just change thing at the last minutes. Myolie, of course, speak better because she was doing biochemistry as her major in college.
In addition, I don’t think Hong Kong’s viewers should even have the right to criticize when they cannot even speak like that either. I don’t know how they even know what it’s the right form of English either. Give them a break, go poke at their friends/family/children’s English instead or improve themselves.

Speaking English or not speaking English does not determine whether you are a good actor or not. There is no connections between the two.
I think they do… especially when you are portraying a role of a diplomatic / ambassador? I think English is still one of the most spoken languages in the world and mastering it would have the advantages.
No, I personally think that if you are a good actor and know that you will have to speak a fair amount of English in a drama series, the actor should at least try to speak with proper pronunciation, especially those names and simple words. Of course, I can’t expect him to speak fluent and good English overnight, weeks or months.

Myolie studied in Belfast? No wonder why I thought she was putting on an accent at the beginning of episode 5 – sounded like she was veering towards American… Not that I’d expect her to fully pick up the Northern Irish accent either.

Poor English skills is greatly due to the lack of practice and constant usage. I am sure that many artists’ Mandarin speaking skills are better than their English. However, if the artist want to make sure that their speaking skills are realistic and believable, they would either Option #1 – need a good speaking coach and do multiple takes until they get it right (TVB is cheap so they do not want to waste time) or Option #2 – just dub over their voice.
Ron’s English is worst then his acting…. And did not get any better. Knowingly, than he will be taking on the role for the second time, knowing the English is not good at all, I would think a good actor will spend timing improving his English. Acting and English just as bad….
None of the male leads can speak English properly. It’s not just Ron. That being said, it’s not a big deal. It’s for entertainment and everything can’t be filmed to represent everything in reality properly. American shows like Arrow have characters speaking Mandarin and those lines are usually just random words with no meaning whatsoever. If it doesn’t affect the plot just get over it.
I may have missed Ron’s standard of English but must say the girls are better. I notice Francis is always hesitating when he speaks English and Kenneth has a strong Cantonese accent. But ohh well, nobody insist that pilots speak good English and we do understand what is going on which, is more important.
I wouldn’t expect the HK actors to speak English as good as Americans or British but seriously I can’t even hear a word what Francis or Ron were saying when they speak English. I will alwiz end up asking, what? what was he saying? or laugh it off bcz they seem to just simple blurt it out without making an effort to pronounce the words.
It actually affects the mood when watching the drama and makes it difficult to follow the plot.

and look at Jackie Chan and Jet Li and even Zhang Ziyi… they engaged with tutors to improve their English.. perhaps they could afford the best tutors with their much higher income…
Just because you have a lot of money does not mean that you will have better English. You do not need a lot money to improve your language skills. It just depends on you and your motivation as well as your own efforts.
Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and Zhang Ziyi obviously need tutors to improve their English… because they’ve broken into the US Market, with them being in Hollywood films.. speaking English would be an asset and necessity when they attend film premieres and such. However, TVB is solely based in Hong Kong, where their dramas are all in Cantonese, so there isn’t much of a point to find a tutor and pay them to learn how to pronounce a few sentences fluently in English….?
Agree. Francis is the worst among all and unfortunately he is the one who speaks tons of English in England and as a pilot on the plane. It is a pain to hear his English dialogues.
Francis wasn’t the worst, considering his background. He speaks with you can say heavy HK accent. Kenneth was the worst, again considering his background. He can’t even string a sentence together, more so speak in a way that can be understood. And it wasn’t even heavy HK accent. It was just bad pronunciation. Which is why I salute Francis. He tried. In TITS 1 he tried, Joe Ma literally gave up without trying. TITS 2 he improved and he also tried.
I think francis’ character was supposed to speak english badly in TITS1. Remember he started reciting his poem seriously, and the little brats (S4, myolie, jerry lamb) started laughing? They werent staring at him with awe, like wow, hes my idol, but hahaha, hes a weird oldie. Contrasting the difference in attitudes between the youths and francis.

Agreed. I can’t comprehend English spoken by Ron, Francis and Kenneth. Chilam, Myolie, Fala and Nancy’s command in English are good enough for the drama. Even most of the supporting casts’ English are way better than the two.

english is a universal language, so why not have an english name? exposure beyond hong kong/chinese speaking places will require english. even if it isn’t an “english” name, the pronunciation of their names is still in english

I guess they have an English name so that it is easier to go by??? Also, HK used to be ruled by the British so maybe that is another reason why they have an English name?? Not sure…
it’s not an everyday language to these actors, of course the pronunciation and sound will be a bit off. people should cut some slack. i admit hearing kenneth speak english is entertaining to listen to.
Honestly, it’s more surprising to hear good English from the actors. I personally think Chilam, Fala, and Myolie’s english is good, but of course not as great as Toby Leung/Angela Tong/Eliza Sam’s English.

well I have to admit their english is pretty tough on the ear.. but how good do we expect their english to be, really? especially when their target is the hongkong audience. I have to admit I do laugh when I listen to these actors speak english, but I have zero expectations towards their fluency etc
I went to university in Australia, and trust me on this, most of the Hongkongers there have the exact same slang as Ron.
I’ll rather see a TVB artiste with perfect cantonese and bad english than a TVB artiste with sub par cantonese and perfect english. Like this is TVB, not Hollywood so learn the language properly. I’m sick of seeing these starlets on screen thinking they’re the bomb when they’re really really cringeworthy.

A lot of HK stars say they were raised in North America, but in reality, they only moved there in their teens like Fala Chen, Kenneth Ma, Moses Chan, Kate Tsui, etc. When you hit your teens, it’s a lot harder to pick up a new language unlike kids and babies and thus, you can never be as fluent and actually speak natively, not just fluent who were born and raised there like Linda Chung, Aimee Chan, Grace Wong, Eliza Sam, etc.
A lot of the immigrants nowadays, especially teens and older they don’t actually try to merge into the North American society, but just stick to their cultural community. This doesn’t help them to improve their language because language really requires practice, even kids who become fluent need to keep practising in order to remain their fluency. This is why I’m not surprised at Ron Ng’s unimproved English in 10 years, he’s in a community that just pushes for Cantonese and Mandarin, not English.

these people are pathetic! people should stop bashing the cast for their english since they are cantonese speakers in the first place and not expected to be fluent in english!
I’m not sure about others, but I personally did not expect fluency. I have no problem with slang whatsoever because it is understandable as people come from different backgrounds.
However, the situation now is that the cast in this series are speaking English that are incomprehensible. As an actor, you have to deliver your lines properly and act at the same time in order to achieve a good end results for the viewers to appreciate. They are clearing not doing it properly.

I agree with you that Kevin’s English sounds pretty good. He has a strong American accent but his pronunciation and grammar are correct. I see that he is careful to speak properly. Another actor who speaks fluent English is Jessica Suen. She studied at and graduated from the prestigious British university, the Imperial College, London.

I think for Francis, Ron & Kenneth, single or double words in English is fine. Expecting them to speak full sentences, when they cant is not their fault. Script writers should be more aware of that.
Usually when someone reaches their late 20s, their natural accent rarely changes because their brain is ‘set’ to this accent. Being from Australia, I started out speaking with an English accent because my primary school teachers were from the UK. My friends spoke with General Australian accent, so my accent changed with them. Now its sort of a hybrid between the two and hasn’t changed for a while. I’m just saying the way we speak is influenced early by the way we are exposed to spoken English. After it is set, it’s very hard to change.
Actually I do think that heavy accents do affect an actor’s acting in front of the camera. Very likely the actor has better listening comprehension than speaking, so they do hear themselves talking. Easy to become instantly self-conscious and nervous which affects performance.
If Ron or any of the other poor English speakers were French, and spoke ‘bad’ English with a French accent, I bet people will go… “Ahh, how posh/romantic/cute…”

Well its true what you both said about the French. I got questioned, ok, bashed, by my child’s paeditrician (French) for speaking Mandrin to my kids in his office. He asked my husband why we were not speaking French with the kids and my husband said that I’m Chinese and so our kids should speak in their mother tongue with their mother and speak in French to their father. Which is what we have been doing all along.
He told my husband that shouldn’t be.
Before we left his office, he told my kids to speak more French and reiterated that message to my husband. I insisted that we change paeditricians from then on.
Thank heavens for my self restraint, else I would have pulled some Le Femme Nikita stunts on him.

I think many of the comments here question the necessity of these English dialogues in a Cantonese series, produced in HK for the Cantonese audience.
And the fact that the actors spoke them badly has underscored how ridiculous this production decision was.
