“Ruse of Engagement” Struggles With Complaints and Low Ratings

Although TVB saw promising viewership figures during the first quarter of 2014, its current line-up has been unable to maintain the momentum. The station’s prime-time series achieved lackluster results during the first week of April, and received numerous complaints over its contents.

Despite criticism over the declining quality of its productions, TVB entered 2014 with rather favorable results. Many of its series managed to break 30 points average, especially during their final weeks. The company’s last three completed prime-time series, Outbound Love <單戀雙城>, Gilded Chopsticks <食為奴>, and Storm in a Cocoon <守業者>, have all debuted with at least a 26 point average. The ratings rose throughout their broadcasts, peaking as high as 35 points during their series finales.

Unfortunately, TVB’s current prime time programming seems unable to maintain the high ratings streak. Even though it was once a highly anticipated series, Ruse of Engagement <叛逃> is now seeing a consistent decline in ratings. Averaging 27 points during its premiere week, the numbers dropped to 26 the following week, and then again to 25 points. The Office of Communications Authority received 47 viewer complaints regarding the show last week; many are concerned that the profanity and violence set bad examples for younger viewers.

Swipe Tap Love <愛我請留言> also saw modest results, beginning its run with a relatively low 24 points. Although a more light-hearted series, viewers also found it to be a negative influence on children and complained about a child’s bathing scene. TVB and the Communications Authority also received reports over obvious product placements, boring plot, and dissatisfaction over Priscilla Wong’s (黃翠如) performance.

    you are not getting it.
liking the drama or not liking the drama has little to do with whether or not the clips are cliffhangers or not. people could watch this drama because it has some of their favourite artistes or producer. Simply because a person doesn’t like the drama doesnt mean that the person see the episode previews as cliffhanger.

  2. If anyone want to watch new tvb series in English subtitle go to tvbdo.org website. It has new series upload almost everyday.

  3. ai yer, ruco should be with yip ting…. jessica is so annoying….

  4. I thought Ruco did well in ROE.
As for Ron…..no improvement at all since I first saw him acting in Revolving Door Of Vengence. Dead pan expressions in all moods.
Aimee was ok in earlier episodes but really bad acting last two episodes. I’m referring the scenes between her and Yoyo when she ask Yoyo about her relationship with Ruco. She was just regurgitating quickly what she memorized , much like reading the script quickly and get it over with. Dito with her scenes with Ron.

  5. this drama is bombbbbbbbbbbb, I LOVE IT. Makes me excited for Tiger cubs 2 because of the action scenes, although I prefer Ruco over Joe Ma hehe

  6. Aimee gave an outstanding performance in “Outbound Love”, but can’t say the same for her performance in “Ruse of Engagement” though I won’t say it was bad. Just not as good. The same could be said of Ruco.

    1. I heard that Ruco was sick while filming ROE
and don’t know if that affect his performance or maybe 3 years make a big different the way he delivers the character, to me he is always a brilliant actor.

      1. Agreed. I’ve like him since My Date With A Vampire, and he has shown vast improvement since then. Of all the current TVB siusangs, I think he’s one with greater promise. He has the charisma and the acting chops to go along. What he needs is a good script and memorable character. I thought his delivery of Carson was convincing, as the street-wise and pragmatic police and the trusting/loving son, brother, boyfriend.

  7. Aimee performed brilliantly in ‘Outbound Love’. But the same cannot be said of her performance in ‘Ruse of Engagement’. She seemed to be rather stiff and jaded. Similarly, Ruco’s acting was much better in ‘Outbound Love’.
