TVB Best Actor and Actress Awards Will Not Be Decided by Popular Vote
Last year, TVB broke new ground by allowing Hong Kong viewers’ votes to decide the Best Actor and Actress awards for the first time. However, TVB announced today that this year’s top awards will be decided by a panel of judges instead, not trusting the public will choose wisely.
The 2012 TVB Anniversary Awards popular voting method renewed interest in the annual awards, which many viewers have criticized in recent years as being unfair by rewarding promoted artists instead of truly talented individuals. With a rare opportunity to decide Hong Kong’s most popular awards event, the masses turned up their votes and gave Wayne Lai (黎耀祥) his third Best Actor award last year.
However, Wayne’s victory was not without controversy. One weakness of the popular voting system is its lack of professional judgment. Are viewers truly able to separate acting performances from the likability of the nominees?
TVB Director of Production, Sandy Yu (余詠珊), believes the answer is to allow a panel of industry professionals to decide the Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Drama awards. Ms. Yu said, “We are considering forming a judging committee consisting of several hundred professionals. Perhaps we will not count the audience votes.” Ms. Yu revealed that the final selection guidelines will be decided in later management meetings.
The 2013 Anniversary Awards ceremony will be held on Monday December 16, 2013. Although TVB has not unveiled its official list of nominees yet, a year of mostly dismal ratings made it difficult to predict who will be the winners. The Best Actress battle is largely speculated to be between Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣) and Kate Tsui (徐子珊), while Chilam Cheung (張智霖), Francis Ng (吳鎮宇), Moses Chan (陳豪) and Wayne Lai are considered to have good chances in the Best Actor award.

again!!! No way. I didn’t even think he deserved it last year. He totally does not have good acting skills but is only lucky enough to receive good roles and scripts. His facial expressions are horrible, it’s only his scripts that make his characters lively.

Other than Chilam and Francis, I thought Ron did really well in Triumph also. Everything came out so natural from him (except the English) and he had really good chemistry with all his partners. Really well done on his part, but don’t know if he’s considered a main in that drama.

For the love of God, Wayne signed just 2-year contact in early 2012, NOT “right before blah blah”.

I agree. As I start to pay more attention to mainland series, I’m finding that even the really young actors can act well because they’ve been properly trained in colleges. Both Kate and Linda are better than their beauty queens counterpart, but they are still mediocre. Kate I think is better than Linda.
I think tavia did a fantastic job in agwtc2 so i support tavia. Dont think tavias gonna win a second time tho…but worth a shot.

Somehow, to me, this article means to say that Linda is taking home BA this year. As for BA for the male side, I’m crossing my fingers for Kenneth or Ruco. I pick Kenneth because I’m simply infatuated with his character Yat Kin Tou and I thought he really deserves BA last year (Raymond deserves it too for his role as happy sir, but no, it just had to go into Wayne’s hands for the third time. Don’t get me wrong, I am a fan of Wayne, I thought he was a great actor since his piggy days and I cheered when he finally won recognition with his role in the gentle crackdown 2 as the advisor. But, his role in TC was nothing outstanding. However, I have to stress that it’s not his acting, it’s the script damn it. It would have been better if Lianying showed his evil side. I am sure many of us would love to see that instead of watching the goody two shoes Lianying for 30 over episodes.) Ruco has always been an amazing actor, this guy can really act. He can pull off any kind of character, it’s high time to give him the recognition he deserves. TITS 2 was not great in my opinion, just decent. It’s like finally, we get something more decent to watch on the television after all he bullet brain and beauty at war trash. Francis was merely reprising his role in TITS except that he’s scolding Cadet Fala in the show now instead of Cadet Ron. He didn’t get a BA for TITS, so why now? I’m huge fan of Chilam and yes, while he was very suave as Captain Koo and his acting chops has never failed me, the amount of screentime he gets doesn’t make him seem like a leading actor in TITS. Yes, his screentime was heavy at the start but he literally disappeared for a couple of episodes towards the end…and even when he reappeared and started his advancements towards holiday…I don’t know, his character felt very pointless there. I don’t think it’s BA worthy, it’s not chilam’s fault, i’s the character. Anyway, he deserves a my favourite male character for sure, no one would say no to this 🙂

Linda Chung as BA? She’s doing well in Brother’s Keeper, but she doesn’t stand out. I know she’s billed as a lead actress in BK but at the moment, she’s nothing more than a supporting actress to Ruco Chan and Edwin Siu’s lead actors.
But BK’s not even halfway done, so maybe Linda’s screentime/significance will increase.
Agree. Linda acts okay in “Brother’s Keeper”, but she does not stand out. In fact, Kristal Tin acts better in “BK” and outshines Linda in this drama series.

Well, Francis has already said that he won’t be attending the Anniversary Awards whether he is nominated or not….so based on TVB’s ‘unwritten rule’ (“no show = no award”), that means he for sure won’t get any TVB awards this year (not that Francis had a chance anyway, since he’s considered an ‘outsider’ and TVB will most likely give it to their own artists whom they want to promote)….
A panel of professeional judges does sound good and fair enough. Merely trusting on the whims and fancies of the media can be disastrous. Fair and sound judgments will just fly out the window. To me what TVB has decided is indeed a better way of selection.

Public voting does not serve the purpose of selecting BEST ACTING. How many people really appreciate and how how to define “good acting”? People usually like their idols more no matter they act well or not and they will definitely vote for them.
“Professional judges” should be professional people from outside, and they are independent and not associated with either TVB or artistes.
Professional judges should include:
1) Independent producers
2) Independent directors
3) Critiques
4) Drama school instructors
5) Independent well-known artistes
6) General audience
7) Etc.
A panel of 10 people will be a good number.
Won’t happen because the keyword will be affiliated with TVB through shows, contracts, etc.
I agree with what Sandcherry said about who should be a part of the panel. The group should be experienced as well as not affiliated with TVB since this is a professional panel. Of course, it should be “balanced” by having some TVB veteran actors (eg. Bowie Wu, Michelle Yim, Damien Lau, some people who achieved Longtime Achievement Award in TVB) to have some say since they have been in this industry for so long! But i really don’t know =_=
I liked how they altered the judges for Voice of stars, but how they are doing this professional panel is questionable.
@Bubblez: Well, it’s kind of hard to compare with Voice of Stars or any of those singing competitions because up until this point, TVB doesn’t really have its own record label (TVB Music LTD doesn’t count, since their main focus is to produce theme songs for their series)…the only music producer who is truly on TVB’s payroll is Tang Chi Wai, so aside from him, TVB can choose from a boatload of veteran HK music producers, composers, lyrics, music teachers, singers, etc. who are not affiliated whatsoever to be judges and it wouldn’t be much problem. On the TV series front however, things are different because TVB is a television station first and foremost and with all the series / variety shows they produce (plus their involvement in movies now as well), they are less likely to find ‘qualified’ professionals in acting who are not associated or affiliated with them in some way, shape, or form….which is why I actually doubt this professional judging panel thing is going to pan out (TVB is going to have difficulty finding 10 people to be on that panel, let alone 100!!)

It depends on who they consider ‘professional judges’….that’s why I said in my comment below that I need to see the criteria they will be using to pick these judges. We won’t be able to make a determination of whether this will truly be the ‘fairest’ way of selecting the winners until we understand all the dynamics at play — i.e. how the judges are chosen, the format of the selection process (for example — do the judges get to pick the winner from a pre-determined list of the top 5 or do they actually get to pick the top 5 as well from all the possible candidates, etc.)
It will be interesting to see how this pans (if it’s actually true that is)…

Why should TVB promote Wong Cho Nam as Best Actor? He is not good looking and cannot act any siu sang roles? He can get best supporting actor award if he is really that good.
Inbound Troubles is the only series thus far for the past 3 years that I can rewatch when it was rebroadcast. It deserves the best series. Roger Kwok deserves an award too. Esther should win.

Wayne Lai not a good looking actor and not a siu sang roles actor STILL he land himself 3 Best Actor Awards.
I think when choosing Best Actor or Actress , not only on acting or good looking, more on how he/she dedicate his/her effort during filming.How they overcome difficulties during filming. Normally this kind of feedback come from the filming crews members , directors , producers or even from the public.

If you compare Wayne Lai with Wong Cho Nam, I would definitely say that Wayne Lai is better. His roles are rather limited, but are still broader than Wong Cho Nam’s.
Wong Cho Nam may be a very talented guy, but not on screen. He could be very good in ideas, scriptwriting, singing or even acting, but his look will narrow him down to very few characters.
Yes, best drama should go to Inbound Troubles for the originality and high ratings and great cast/acting combo!! MUST WATCH!!~ 😀
I doubt Wong Cho Lam would get the award… at all. He is not the best acting material at TVB yet.
Ever since he acted in those feminine roles, I don’t think highly of him or his acting. If he needs to act feminine roles to get recognition, he is not a good actor.
WCL is a true entertainer. I think he has good acting. You often see him with smiling face, but his real personality is rather calm and quiet. I give credit to him to act differently to himself. Many only can act roles with characteristic similar to themselves.

If TVB truly does move forward with the professional judges route, then good for them because all along, that’s been something that audiences like me have been pushing for. With that said however, I would need to look at the criteria for choosing the professional judges to determine whether TVB is heading in the right direction….if the judges panel consists of any TVB employees (i.e. their own management or even producers), then to me, there’s no point in going the professional judges route because it’s still going to be biased….
Thank heavens they did away with the popular vote… it was the dumbest idea ever.
They can use voting for most popular actor.. but something such as “BEST” actor/actress needs to be done by a panel.

For goodness sake, I never appreciate her acting especially since the movie she cried a lot as lover with Raymond Lam Fung. Every time with no discrimination on her, I just could not see her face, body or hear her ugly voice (worse when she is emotional and always same style just like Tavia Yeung Yi). I have to turn to other channel when her role comes into picture.
If this big face Linda Chung wins TVB award, it is really fluke. Kate Tsui is so so. Fala Chen is definitely prettier, better acting and sexy too. Eliza Sam is cute but puffy face and neck lines (pouting lips is ok and sexy). Alice Chan is ok. Kristal Tin is ok. Ankie Beilke is beautiful.

Your way may not pick the best actor, but it at least gives the award legitimacy, since many people actually picked the winner – instead of couple of clueless execs in an office trading wins between each other for money or whatever.

His range of acting is very limited and 3 times is more than enough I think.
I think Chilam deserves it after slaving away for so long with no recognition. Admittedly, I haven’t watched Triumph 2, but he’s getting a lot of good press from it and I haven’t ever seen him act poorly before.
I have a feeling they will give it to Francis though, as “thanks” for filming for them, and to entice others to film for them in exchange.
I’m sure a few movie actors would be willing to film for them if they knew they could probably get an award out of it. – TVB know it.
Best female, I could care less since both the top picks have woeful acting skills IMO. It’s like picking the least bad smelling piece of dung out of a pile of dung and saying it’s the best.
So I’m not the only one who thinks Wayne’s role is not diversified haha. In my opinion Gallen Lo’s 3-time TV King is so much better, Wayne’s first two awards are based on two really similar roles imo.
Agreed with Chilam, has anyone not noticed him yet? He deserves an award since The Legend of the Condor Heroes. Can’t really blame anyone tho, he hasn’t filmed much with TVB, around 10 only in 20 years? But I’ve always enjoyed his dramas, and he has been bringing a lot of viewing rates for all his dramas, always Top 5 highest rating in that year. Notably Cold Blood Warm Heart, Return of Cuckoo, Point of No Return, Take My Word for it, Rippling Blossom (Enjoyed him w/ Myolie!) I hope will at least get a My Favourite.

I’ve no opinion for Best Female, neither Linda nor Kate is the best choice. I still can’t stand both of their acting, even Tavia is better, at least I enjoyed her in AGWTC 2
So far in BK, Linda doesn’t even stand out at all and we’re halfway through the series even Kristal has more screen time than her. Unless something very dramatic happens at the end of the series, her character so far is not BA worthy since it’s just a love interest role. Kate’s role in Sniper is fine but her character is still not the best candidate for BA but more appropriate than Linda’s character. In fact I heard she may be nominated for Bounty Lady instead so which is why she’s consider a top contender but I don’t know why Linda is up there unless Tavia shines in THC2. It would of been more appropriate if Kate won last year so this year it would be Tavia and Linda and I highly doubt they’re giving it to Fala unless she stands out as well in Will Power. If the audiences loves it they can’t ignore it and that’s a fact as proven in the last two BA winners.
Judges in TVB don’t make decisions based on who acted better their decisions is based on who had the most positive responses from audiences which is crap in my opinion because if an artiste is well liked in general the audiences don’t care if they acted well or not.

@sandcherry: Sorry, but I had to laugh (no offense to you though)…when has TVB ever respected the words “best acting”? From the time the anniversary awards were established back in 1997 to present day, those awards have always been politically driven and motivated (yes, even the most deserving of wins have some type of political element behind it)…this is why to this day, I refuse to call the award a ‘best actor’ or ‘best actress’ award — 99.9% of the time, I refer to those 2 awards as ‘TV King’ or ‘TV Queen’. TVB’s awards have never been about who is the best in “acting” and most likely never will be….
At least not the same artistes (who obtained the highest numbers of votes) will get TV King and TV Queen again this year. It is good news.
If the artistes do an excellent job, they deserve to win the awards, not because they are liked or not by the audience.
I really hope that TVB will honour the “professional panel of judges” and not popular votes.. but even with a professional panel, some bias is not avoidable.
But I really admire Ruco’s honesty saying that he’s not up to the “best actor” standards yet, and that he wishes to have more experience first before getting the award. Last year, I suggested on this forum that the awards should be decided by a panel of credible judges. Someone here shot my idea down. Rebutted every suggestion I made 🙁

I’ve always wondered how the executives decide which artist is more deserving than the other…I mean, obviously each judge would have their own opinion on how each nominated artists performs, so even if it’s a panel of ‘credible judges’, in the end it doesn’t really make it fair voting system. If it also considers the audiences opinions/votes as well, it would be fairer at least- like a 50% panel and 50% audience…
the audience chose wisely last time. true thespian Wayne Lai vs teengirl idol Raymond Lam. no brainer there TVB.
guess they’re returning to rigging it again for future fav sons n daughters.
I kind of felt sorry for Raymond last year-everyone was so hyped up about him winning and the next thing you know Wayne took home the award LOL poor guy. But I was happy that Wayne won-he deserved it.
Actually I think its a luck to him because after that slap, he knows how Txb really treats him and can move on. He has/is/wont never been their true biological son, so dream of one day they will give him a favour is meaningless.
His contract is very flexible now, maybe the next one if any will be even more flexible. He has a world to go, bind with Txb is unnecessary.
But, Wayne’s performance was mediocre in Eunuch. Wayne’s a pretty solid actor, but I don’t think he’s deserving of 3 times TV king.

I think Wayne deserved his 3 times TV King title. His drama was much better than High & Low. Plus Raymond is treated with special treatments in TVB, he is the only person that can film at other tv stations, without being punished like other. So for that he should be glad, what more does he want??
@penny: when Txb received at least half from 500k RMB per eps, I doubt they will like to say no to the deals, lolz. The flexibilities have its price. He is paid more than others by other stations, he has the release. Why he should feel appreciate for such things? Other stations choose him themselves, Txb didnt negotiate with them to force them to choose him. Then it isnt special treatments or favours. Note tat 620 and Tommy treats him pretty well, but now Sandy Yu+Catherine Tsang rules, so he is of course being kicked aside. Catherine Tsang even dun allow directors under her to choose LF for series, or have to pull him under her people. Lau Ka Ho hinted so in an interview for why he chose LF for his series.
Btw, even the filmmakers think Txb has wrong direction to his career, not only fans. They just wanna invest him in short term, said by the filmmakers. So he is having good choice to put one leg out of Txb. Perhaps the only thing that can keep him is his manager who helps him a lot.
Teengirl idol, ironically most of his fans are OL or old people and a fair amount of men. Shown in his concerts.
Really have to say tat such comparison is rather annoying. No brainer know no audience but Txb decided the result last year. If not, why Txb never dare to show the accounted number? Not saying of Wayne’s acting but the game Txb played last year, dont drag the audience in.
um how does TVB really treat him again? bad? you’re kidding right? he didn’t win only because the audience had the power to vote. if it was TVB, it would of gone right into his hands so stop blaming them for his loss, they treat him a hell lot better than their other actors.

Virginia Lok favors him the most, otherwise why would he say he would stay as long as she is there? he gets preferential treatment all the time, the most ads and film deals negotiated for him. what a nutty fan to think otherwise.
TVB was aghast at him losing, now his looney fans think its rigged when that was the only fair chance the others had at winning against him.

To answer you, if Txb ever wants to give him, he won years ago because from 2006, his name was hyped up to win. But he wins? Nah. So the audience has no power. Have Txb ever dare to show the accounted amount of votes last year. Maybe only stubborn fans like you try to use audience as excuses.
He dun do much with Txb now, lesser than 1 series, so yeah, your idols can grab the chances to conquer Txb’s world. He gave it to them and ventured out, good for both sides.

Because tbb just wants to make things more difficult & bias. At the end of the day, the company would always want to be in control and play by their own rules in the game.

I don’t necessary think that selecting professional judges to vote for Best Actor and Best Actress is necessary good. Think of it this way: I doubt the ‘professional’ judges would have watched every episode of a series for every series that was broadcast. I have always noticed that those professional judges mention that they don’t watch TV series much so I don’t find it actually more better for the audience to vote: as they have paid more attention and effort on watching the series; rather than just being selected being of your ‘professional’ status.
There are just too many diehard fans these to support fair voting!
@Anthony: That’s actually a very good point…at least in the movie world, the chosen judges can do special screenings of the movies being nominated and watch each one all the way through before deciding (that’s what happens with most of the ‘credible’ film award panels)…with TV series, it’s different cuz who has time to sit through hundreds of episodes and watch every single performance for that year?
The more I think about it, the more I feel TVB is setting their ‘goal’ too high…this professional judging panel thing is most likely NOT going to happen…
They should just put Best Actor/Actress (professional judges) AND My Favourite Actor/Actress (audiences) AND My Favourite Male/Female Characters.
Basically, TVB is concerned that their biological will not win. So far, Francis and Chilam have the most noise bc of how popular TITS2 got. But…TVB doesn’t want them to win. Now, there’s an excuse to rig results behind doors. Hah!
Yes, I do agree that the judging system may not necessarily win the right actor the best actor award. Likewise, the voting system.
TVB may probably want to identify what are the criteria that deemed an actor/actress a best performer.
for example : no of shows acted
etc, etc.
To be fair to those to have put in much effort and also in the number of dramas instead of popularity.
I agree some cant even act but somehow their faces just gain the popularity of the public.
Wow that’s some news right there. Obviously because Francis Ng and Chilam is in the “competition” and the audience most probably will vote for either one of them… and that is going against TVB’s will. TVB ain’t that stupid to give their award away to the outsiders.
On the sidenote, I honestly think Chilam hasn’t and didn’t have the chance to show his best potential in TITS2. Even though Mr.Cool has made a name for himself and received plenty of loves from the viewers, his acting skills was heavily overshadowed by Francis Ng. That is actually expected.
Chilam suits Favorite TV Character more because well… that’s his spot for sure. But if TVB were to be fair and include those two in the competition, Francis Ng definitely deserves the pie.
