2013 Hong Kong Film Awards: “Cold War” and “The Bullet Vanishes” Lead Nominations
The nominees for the 32nd Hong Kong Film Awards were announced on February 5. Action films dominate this year’s Best Picture nominations. Crime thrillers, The Bullet Vanishes <消失的子彈> and Cold War <寒戰>, also formally lead the race with 12 nominations each. Both films will be vying for other top honors, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor.
Espionage thriller, The Silent War <聽風者>, directed by Infernal Affairs <無間道> creators Alan Mak (麥兆輝) and Felix Chong (莊文強), comes second with eight nominations, including Best Actor and Best Actress. Despite the film’s commercial success in mainland China, The Silent War underperformed at the Hong Kong box office, also failing to grab a Best Picture nod.
Love in the Buff <春嬌與志明>, the successful sequel to 2010’s HKFA Best Picture Love in a Puff <志明與春嬌>, also failed to enter the Best Picture nomination this year.
Besides The Bullet Vanishes and Cold War, Category III comedy Vulgaria <低俗喜劇>, action film Motorway <車手>, and the big-budget The Viral Factor <逆戰> will be competing for Best Picture. Running for Best Director includes Cheang Pou Soi (鄭保瑞) for Motorway, Pang Ho Cheung (彭浩翔) for Love in the Buff, Law Chi Leung (羅志良) for The Bullet Vanishes, Dante Lam (林超賢) for The Viral Factor, and directors Longman Leung (梁樂民) and Sunny Luk (陸劍青), for Cold War.
As the screenwriter for both Vulgaria and Love in the Buff, Pang Ho Cheung received two nominations for Best Screenplay. Zhou Xun (周迅) also received two nominations for Best Actress – one for The Silent War, and another for The Great Magician <大魔術師>, both co-starring Tony Leung Chiu Wai (梁朝偉).

Tony Leung Ka Fai for the win!
Vulgaria’s gonna get snubbed. Which is a shame because it’s a damn good movie
