Andy Lau Reflects on Filming of “Lost and Love”

Stripping away from his clean-cut idol image, Andy Lau (劉德華) stars as a rugged farmer in director Peng Sanyuan’s (彭三源) Lost and Love <失孤>. Although many were skeptical about his ability to portray a weathered farmer who spends 15 years looking for his kidnapped son, Andy’s dedication to the role proved otherwise.

Reflecting on his own passions, Andy revealed that his inner passion similarly reflects the character’s persistence in searching for his son. “I am most similar to the character because of my belief in the film industry. Even if the Hong Kong film industry never reaches the level of success it once had, we should never lose passion. Do you think I don’t earn a lot of money working in Mainland China? As long as the Hong Kong film industry endures, there is still hope.”

Other than tanning himself to achieve the look of a sun-weathered farmer, Andy also purposely blunted his nails to resemble the coarsened hands of a farmer.

Despite the amount of effort placed into the role, Andy expressed that he is not hopeful for awards. Andy was adamant about taking part in the film due to the message it represented. He revealed, “I wanted to use this film to send a message to the parents who’ve had their children kidnapped, the children who were kidnapped, or even the kidnappers.”

Although Andy is satisfied with the outcome of the film, he revealed that working with Peng Sanyuan was quite a different experience. “Peng Sanyuan is a director who has no expectations of an actor’s performance. In her eyes, there is not a specific way to act, so she did not give me any pressure.”

The film features many childhood memories, which Pen Sanyuan explores on a pure level. Andy said, “Because times have changed, the legacies and memories we leave behind will slowly disappear. Facing these circumstances, what can we do? We can’t hold on to things and make time stop. We still have parents who think about us. Whether it is the presence or absence of something, all is illusion. This is a really simple story, so you either really get something out of it, or you get nothing from it at all,” said Andy.
