Bosco Wong Wins Best Actor at Europe China Image Film Festival

Bosco Wong (黃宗澤) brought home the Best Actor award for his role in the film Golden Brother <男人唔可以窮> at the 6th Europe China Image Film Festival (ECIFF), one of the largest Chinese film festivals in Europe.

“The audience can strongly relate with each and every character in Golden Brother,” said Bosco in his acceptance speech. “Young people can learn from the film’s social influence and values.”

In addition to Bosco’s win, William Chan (陳偉霆) also won Best Young Actor for the same film.

In a later interview, Bosco expressed his shock and happiness to win Best Actor. As he had to rush back to Hengdian World Studios to film Tong Hua’s (桐華) new idol drama Destined to Love You <偏偏喜歡你>, Bosco had no time to hold a celebratory dinner. “However, I did drink wine with my manager! I didn’t tell my mother yet. I want to surprise her with the news on Weibo!”

Turning 34 years old on December 13, Bosco said he considers the award to be his early birthday present. Bosco, who debuted as a television actor with TVB, said the award has boosted his confidence and now he feels more comfortable in tackling the film industry.

Golden Brother, directed by Chung Shu Kai (鍾澍佳), is a romantic comedy about an unlucky office worker who loses his job and girlfriend on the same day. It is based on a popular online biographical novel.

  1. Oh yeah! Good to see his hardworking pay off. Keep it up, Bosco. Your future is looking brighter after this win.

  2. Congratulations to Bosco! He deserves the award. I’ve watched the movie while I visited HK earlier, movie is okay(can see the low budget) but Bosco is solid. William Chan surprisingly wasn’t bad at all. The best of all is their father Liu Kai Chi who deserves an award at HKFA.

    1. Oh so,that is movie with Liu Kai Chi as his father. Liu Kai Chi is a veteran actor with good skills so no doubt about his acting ability. I love many if his roles in the TVb series back in the days.

Anyways, congrats to Bosco! He is a great actor that is underrated.

  3. wht is this nv hear of it before but anyways it still a award…. congrat bosco

  4. Congratulations, Bosco. Yeah, he can act and is more versatile than many siu sangs in TVB.

  5. What is difference between tvb and film industry? Why would he need more confidence for film? Shouldnt it be easier since the script is alot shorter than a tv series?

    1. The majority of lead actors in television series cannot break into the movie industry. Roles in films require superior acting skills and charisma because movies are short and actors need to leave an impression on every scene they are in. People will not pay to watch the movie if the actors are poor in their roles whilst in tv series you can just change channels if you dislike an actor or series. No one that currently still working for Tvb has broken into the film industry yet but Bosco does have potential. Louis Koo and Gordon Lam and Liu Kai Chi are example previous TVB actors who have managed into break into the film industry. There are hundreds of examples who haven’t.

      1. Yes,good points made by Jimmy! Acting in a series you get more chances to leave an impression on the audience but acting in a movie, those chances are very minimal due to the length. I think that is one of the reasons why many who have acted in series find it very difficult to break into the film industry.

      2. A lot of actors like notable movie actors like Stephen Chow, Andy Lau, Nick Cheung started at TVB.

  6. Congrats Bosco!

Has anyone seen the movie and would you recommend it?

    1. I recommend this movie. It’s no doubt a low budget film. It features many TVB actors as cameos, but besides Wong Cho Lam everyone did a decent to great job.

Bosco did great and do deserve the recognition of this award. Although I wouldn’t say he did a spectacular job or that this is one of his best roles, he makes it really hard to nitpick, acting-wise. Stephy felt very different than usual, a relatively mature role for her. I’ve never seen the other female lead before but she was good and comfortable to watch. Liu Kai Chi was great and he really jerked my tears. William was convincing as the rebellious sibling.

The story is simple and mostly narrated by Bosco. Based on a novel by Sit Ho Ching, a HK Golden Forum novelist, it’s an autobiography of his life of failure and redemption. Besides a few not-so-funny comical reliefs, the movie is mostly non-dramatic and passively preaches the importance of care and responsibility for the people you love.

  7. Congrats! Yep, Bosco has what it takes to make it BIG (“on his own”, unlike LF, haha).

    1. FYI LF already won BEST ACTOR for “Master of Tai Chi” in 2008 at the Asian Television Award in Singapore.
Congrats to Bosco and Ruco for their wins this year!

      1. LOL

Asian “Television” Award in “Singapore”? What a joke!!! haha 🙂

  8. Congratz Bosco, glad he got the Best Actor award and he deserves it. Yeah, not the biggest award ceremony but still a good encouragement for a film newcomer like him.
