Eddie Peng Lost His Voice Playing Wong Fei Hung
Director Roy Chow (周顯揚) and the cast of Rise of the Legend <黃飛鴻之英雄有夢> promoted the film in Wuzhen. Rise of the Legend centers on young Wong Fei Hung, played by Eddie Peng (彭于晏), and his encounters with street thugs in Chu Kong, Guangzhou.
Rise of the Legend takes place in the late Qing Dynasty in Guangzhou, where a street gang known as the Black Tigers ran a human trafficking business. Furious of their horrible deeds, Wong Fei Hung and his friends plan a trap to save the kidnapped humans.
Recalling their experience in filming Rise of the Legend in Wuzhen last year, Eddie said his fight scene in the rain took over ten days to film. Not only did Eddie lose weight, he also lost his voice. It was an unforgettable experience for the 32-year-old. To take advantage of the rainy weather, they had to film very early in the morning.
“It was a scene about fighting thugs. It’s very gory and intense. I had to fight with over ten people. I’m really thankful for the choreographers and stunt actors for helping me out.”
Portraying Wong Fei Hung, comparisons between Eddie and Jet Li (李連杰) in Once Upon a Time <黃飛鴻> are unavoidable. Eddie said, “Before filming, I studied the character and his story in depth. The script [in Rise of the Legend] is very different. It’s about friendship, romance, and Wong Fei Hung’s relationship with his father. I look forward to everyone’s critique on the role and their advice.”
As one of the biggest challenges of his career, Eddie said recreating a legendary role is not easy and is a lot of pressure, but at the same time, it is also encouraging and inspirational.
In related news, Rise of the Legend’s Wang Luodan (王珞丹) has been facing criticism for her poor appearance in the historical television drama, The Virtuous Queen of Han <衛子夫>, which also stars Raymond Lam (林峯). Netizens called Luodan to be the “ugliest queen of the generation”. Luodan, who portrays a martial artist in Rise of the Legend, said she is not worried that she will face similar criticism in the film.
“Everyone has different views of beauty. Having different voices on my performance mean people are watching, and there will be [good] ratings. However, I used the same hairstylist for Rise of the Legend and The Virtuous Queen of Han. We do everything according to the role.”
Jing Boran (井柏然), who does not have any martial arts background or experience in filming action scenes, underwent training with Eddie a month before official production started. “I was so unprepared. I didn’t even have any training clothes and had to borrow Eddie’s.”
