Jay Chou Promotes “The Rooftop” in Beijing
Jay Chou (周杰倫)’s second directorial effort, The Rooftop <天台愛情>, held its China premiere at Beijing’s Workers Indoor Arena on July 1. Jay attended the event along with the film’s stars Li Xin Ai (李心艾), Xu Fan (徐帆), Edison Huang (黃懷晨), Darren (邱凱偉), Dan Tou (彈頭), and producer Will Liu (劉畊宏). The organizers of the event teased the audience with clips of the vibrant dancing from the film. Jay’s fans also choreographed their version of the rooftop dance and gave a live performance together with their idol. On stage, Jay spoke about the romantic concept of the film and shared some of the antics his character used to get the girl of his dreams.
The Rooftop is a musical action film set in a fictional universe reminiscent of the 1970s. It is Jay’s second time as director, screenwriter, and actor of the same film. He also penned the theme song “You Are Everywhere” <哪里都是你>, which was included in his latest album Opus 12. The movie tells a story about a group of young people living together on the rooftops, who spend their days singing and dancing. Their poor but carefree lifestyle is a sharp contrast to the rich living below. The movie examines the meaning of happiness, and encourages its viewers to find joy in the simple things in life.
When asked to discuss the romantic scenes in the film, Jay said, “I am not a very romantic person in real life. I would not say things like ‘I love you’ to others, not even to my mother. However in the film, there is a very romantic scene. It is definitely worth watching.” The organizers then previewed the scene. Jay’s character Lang Zi Gao (浪子膏), in an effort to win over his crush, played by Li Xin Ai, recruited all of his rooftop friends to put on a show of traditional Chinese shadow puppets under the moonlight. Lang Zi Gao also wrote out her name with a stick of candle, creating a sincere and romantic atmosphere.
Mainland actress Xu Fan shared that she was initially worried about acting in a musical, but said that Jay’s direction helped her achieve the perfect shot. “I didn’t know I had to sing and dance at first. I was nervous when I found out I had to do what I’ve never done before… [but it was okay] because Jay personally guided us.”
Singer and the film’s producer Will Liu was asked how he managed to create the rooftop’s lively atmosphere. Will replied, “We didn’t have to purposefully create it. When we weren’t filming, there was always someone dancing, singing, kicking jianzi, or playing mahjong. The atmosphere was naturally very happy and joyous.”
The Rooftop arrives in theaters on July 11, 2013.

” Their poor but carefree lifestyle is a sharp contrast to the rich living below. ”
Well real life is also like that. Like in Titanic, except rich were above, poor below. No need for fantasy film. Just see reality.
Good one!! 🙂
this movie sounds boring already.
