Simon Yam and Charlene Choi Win Acting Prizes at Macau International Movie Festival

Simon Yam (任達華) and Charlene Choi (蔡卓妍) won Best Actor and Best Actress at the Macau International Movie Festival on December 30 for their Category III film, Sara <雛妓>, which will open in Hong Kong in February 2015. The drama film, directed by Herman Yau (邱禮濤) and produced by Chapman To (杜汶澤), explores the dark secrets of sex tourism in Asia.

Charlene, who has filmed more comedies in the past, considers Sara as the breakthrough film in her acting career.  “I’m very happy that I won this award with Simon, as these are the first awards that the film received. I especially want to thank the producer and director for casting me, because this film is completely different from what I’ve done before. It is a big challenge and breakthrough.”

Sara centers around a journalist Sara Ho, who exiles herself to Chiang Mai, Thailand after the editor-in-chief at her firm refused to run a controversial piece she worked on for four months. At a bar in Chiang Mai, she encounters the child prostitute Dok-My and bonds with her.

Meeting Dok-My brings back memories of her own dark past. Molested by her stepfather, the teenage Sara ran away from home and met the “long-legged uncle” Yin (Simon Yam), who is thirty years her senior. They get involved in an immoral relationship for the next eight years, in which Sara sold her body to the older man in exchange for money and schooling.

In regards to the sex scenes in the film, Charlene admitted that it required a great deal of courage to complete them. In the film, Simon fondled and kissed Charlene’s chest. Asked if she had talked about the scenes with her boyfriend William Chan (陳偉霆), Charlene laughed and said she did not need to.

Simon, on the other hand, expressed that he felt bashful when he filmed the scenes and discussed them with his wife, expressing that the scenes in the film are quite intense. He thanked the director for giving Charlene such a dimensional role and expressed that the Hong Kong film industry needs more new blood like Charlene.
