Tony Leung Wants to Film a Comedy

Tony Leung (梁朝偉) and Zhang Ziyi (章子怡) attended the opening ceremony for the 45th India International Film Festival in Panjim earlier this week. Tony said he is thrilled for the opportunity to make an appearance in India and suggests that the Chinese film industry and the Indian film industry should collaborate in the future.

The 52-year-old shared that he has not been filming any major projects since 2013’s The Grandmaster <一代宗師>, which was one of his most physically-demanding films in recent years. Having filmed mostly big-budget drama films in the past ten years, Tony is interested in tackling a different film genre in the future.

“Box office will not be my first consideration. I just want a good film that can entertain everyone.” Tony added that he wants to film more comedic, witty, and light-hearted movies in the future.

On Occupy Central: “It’s Time to Retreat”

Tony Leung, among many other Hong Kong celebrities, supported Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement Occupy Central. In early October, during the earlier stages of the protests, Tony wrote on his Facebook to offer his support to the Hong Kong people, and also denounced the violence by the Hong Kong police against the protesting students.

Occupy Central is still ongoing after one month. Tony was asked for his thoughts about the civil disobedience campaign, to which he said, “Occupy Central has gotten to the stage where the daily lives of Hong Kong citizens are affected. It has caused great inconvenience for many people, as well as many Hong Kong businesses and industries. It’s time to retreat. Everyone has a right to express their own views, but in order to do so they must stay rational and respect Hong Kong’s rule of law.”

  1. I think Tony should film more comedy films ttoo. Despite all the serious roles he has had in the past 10 years or so he is actually really good in acting out comedy roles too. I recall seeing his older movies back in the 90’s when I was a kid where he played characters that were funny and he was actually REALLY funny in the movie…especially the movies where he acted in with Jacky Cheung. I think they should collaborate again to film another comedy movie, the two of them together is hilariousss! I miss seeing that side of Tony.

    1. Yes,I rarely, watch Chinese movies but love that one with Jacky and Tony. I thnk it was Ah Fei and Ah Kei or something like that. They were both hilarious. Hope that Tony acts in funnier movies in the future.

      1. I remembered it was the first Chinese movie I watch when I came to US. He also had a comedy movie with Shu Qi – he was rich but cheap while Shu Qi needed someone to play her boyfriend so she hired him without knowing he was rich at first.

  2. I agreed I think that movie was a Chinese New Year movie called Toong Seng Sai Chow starring the late Leslie, Rosamund Kwan, Carina and Maggie Cheung too if not mistaken. I remembered his sausage lips it was so hilarious lol. Really classic

    1. Yes, you are right. That movie, Tung Seng Sai Chow (aka Eagles Shooting Heroes) is one golden classic where the gang (all good friends in real life) starred in one movie. It’s hilarious and irreplaceable just like those other Chinese NY movies produced by Raymond Wong and starred our beloved Leslie.

Tony is good in comedy and I hope he does more of that instead of those WKW movies.

      1. Yes and there was another movie he acted with Jacky Cheung that was really funny too. It’s called A Chinese Ghost Story III. Jacky Cheung and TonY Leung make the BEST comedy couple ever, I love watching them!

Also the movie Tokyo Raiders with Ekin Cheng is really good too. He played a really funny cop in that one.

  3. Would definitely love to see Tony in more comedies. Some of his best tv roles were comedic, with his classic turns as Wai Siu Bo in Duke of Mount Deer and Siu Yu Yee Two Most Honourable Knights. The other comedic role that I loved was his Town Bully character that Faye Wong falls in love with in Chinese Odyssey 2002. That was a great movie, excellent performances all round

Just another hallmark of his brilliance that he can pull of both genres with equal aplomb

    1. Totally agree! I loved in many of his funny roles in the series that he was in. He truly can do comedy so hope he does funnier movies in the future.

LOL. what he's saying is – It's time to package it up and go home. Ta Pao lik chau ..

  5. Tony is also good as the young hero Cheung Mo kei in the 1986 TVB-series containing martial arts. Carol Cheng and simon Yam are playing for his parents. Sheren Tang is featured as well. But I personally think that Tony is better in serious roles than comedian ones.

    1. I love Tony in both funny and serious roles. The only type of role that I have not seen him in is an evil role.

      1. Thanks and I did mot watch that movie. Would you recommend it?

      2. @HTS
Yes, I would recommend the movie. It was full of suspense. Brilliant acting by Tony Leung, who never disappoints. Even as a villain, he manages to draw out sympathy from viewers in the end. Tang Wei was surprisingly very good in her role. My only complaint was it had a tad too much sexual content and nudity.

  6. You should all watch his movie with Faye Wong, Vicky Zhou and Chang Chen (Chinese Odyssey 2002) it’s funny AND touching!
