Weekly Box Office: “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” Dominates Chinese Box Office
Finding Mr. Right’s <北京遇上西雅图> top position for four weeks in mainland China’s box office is finally unsettled by the release of G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which opened with 209.45 million RMB last week.
Starring Bruce Willis, Dwayne Johnson, and Channing Tatum, G.I. Joe: Retaliation has been popular among worldwide audiences, grossing over 400 million USD in total global receipts. Chinese audiences have continued to eagerly embrace 3D action movies from Hollywood.
Mainland romantic film, A Wedding Invitation<分手合约>, remained in its second position despite the entry of new Hollywood film, The Croods. A Wedding Invitation, which centers around young couple, Bai Baihe (白百何) and Eddie Peng (彭于晏), finding love again 5 years after their breakup, has grossed 145.05 million RMB to-date.
Although Finding Mr. Right has slipped in sales due to competition from new films, its cumulative earnings of more than 500 million RMB made it one of the highest grossing films to open in spring. Finding Mr. Right was also popular in Hong Kong theaters, grossing $8.99 million HKD to-date.
This week will see the release of Vicki Zhao’s (赵薇) directorial debut, So Young <致我们终将逝去的青春>, which will open on April 26. Hong Kong film, Conspirators <同謀>, starring Aaron Kwok (郭富城) and Nick Cheung (張家輝) will open on April 27 in China.

GI Joe, great movie. Too bad, Channing Tatum only lasted less than 15 mins in the movie…
That’s right… I was really looking forward to seeing Channing Tatum!!!
saving general yang gone from the theaters? being a flopped movie doesn’t help it.
Sel_fi_Wu,
“Saving General Yang” is still the top 10 in HK theaters, with cum gross of approximately $6 million HKD. It made approximately 60 million RMB in China.
It may need to cross at least the 80 million mark for it to break even since it was a big production.
It reached to 1 mil USD in HK which equal to nearly 8 mil HKD last week. In China due to the increase of 13% in the third week, it gets about 80 mil already.
In Spore and Taiwan market, its sucessful. Spore market made 1 mil 2 USD this week. In total the whole world, it reached to nearly 20 mil USD, maybe can be equal to the investment (22 mil USD) next week after adding 2 more markets Korea and Vietnam. So Pegasus still can smile at the result as they didnt have a loss.
