Weekly Box Office: “Life of Pi” Grosses $101 Million in 4 Days
Note: “Weekly Box Office” is a new feature at JayneStars.com, providing box office figures and commentary on the latest blockbuster films in mainland China and Hong Kong.
As expected, Director Ang Lee’s (李安) Life of Pi was the box office king. After 4 days in theaters, Life of Pi raked in $101.10 million RMB in China and $10.57 million HKD in Hong Kong.
In its first day of release, box office sales for Life of Pi were lukewarm, only pulling in $12 million RMB in China. As positive word-of-mouth for the film spread, ticket sales climbed to $70 million RMB by Saturday. The visually stunning Life of Pi has a limited 3D showing, likely sparking early crowds to see it in its full glory.
The 3D release of American disaster film, 2012, performed strongly in mainland theaters, earning $90.10 million RMB after 6 days in theaters.
Cold War <寒戰> experienced a 48 percent decline in mainland box office sales in its third week of release. The film earned weekly sales of $47.90 million RMB and a cumulative total of $230.90 million RMB in China. Similarly, Cold War declined in sales by 40 percent, to $8.13 million HKD in Hong Kong for the week ending November 25. Cumulative sales has passed $34.32 million HKD.
Life of Pi and Cold War’s box office will be challenged with the release of two major films, Feng Xiaogang’s (馮小剛) Back to 1942 <一九四二> and Lu Chuan’s (陸川) The Last Supper <王的盛宴>, on November 29.

Don’t worry. Pi doesn’t die in the end. He narrates the movie for heaven’s sake.THis is a story of survival and faith.
Yeah you spoil the ending.
Booked my ticket. Am ready to be awed by it. Loved the book so expectations will be high. But since this is Ang Lee, probably will meet any expectations!
