Jane Zhang Reveals Life “After the Smiles” in New Black-and-White MV

In the newly released music video for her single, “After the Smiles” <微笑以後>, mainland Chinese singer Jane Zhang (張靚穎) uses the form of a black-and-white silent film to juxtapose the public and private lives of a celebrity.

At its essence, “After the Smiles” is a song about a breakup, though Jane uses the MV to explore the concept of a “play within a play.” In the video, Jane takes on the role of “starlet Jane Zhang,” who must face her public life with a professional façade, despite privately drowning in loneliness while thinking of her lost love.

The MV follows the starlet as she begins her day in a café before heading to work. Spotting a happy couple outside the window, Jane reveals a hint of disappointment and sadness. Nevertheless, her negative feelings must be put aside when she arrives at work, where she is instructed to film a magazine photoshoot. Dressed in a glamorous white dress and happily twirling around in artificial snow, Jane successfully suppresses her feelings of loneliness. As she sits in a car on her way back home, however, solitude reaches her again as she watches the rain and the city pass by outside.

By stripping the film of the distraction of colors, the MV allows viewers to focus on Jane’s performance and the harsh realities of celebrity life. “After the Smiles”, which was written and composed by Hong Kong singer-songwriter Khalil Fong (方大同), is the first MV from Jane’s anticipated upcoming album. The video was filmed in Taiwan and is directed by female director Fu Tianyu (傅天餘), who has worked with well-known female singers like Gigi Leung (梁詠琪), Jolin Tsai (蔡依林), and S.H.E.
